What are your experiences with the 70.3 Ironman series?

After I do my first Olympic I will be looking at possibly doing a half Ironman and am stuck because there are so many different 70.3's!

I live in Arizona so I really don't want to do the half here...I've done so many other Tri's with the same course

Here are my limiting factors...I really don't want to have to fly (to save costs), but if I have to I will. The only one I could do without flying would be the California one, but....I have a fear of sharks or swimming in the ocean in general...not sure if I could get over that.

I'm kinda interested in the Kansas one...the humidity will suck tho.

If anyone has done Kansas....let me know how it was or any other 70.3's
All of your input is welcome! Thank you.

Its not humid at Buffalo Springs.  Great people, great support and a course you won't forget.

Keep all of your option's open and don't limit yourself to MDot.  Here is an 09 HIM calendar for you to peruse.  Pick a few out and go research them.  Read some race reports and ask questions.

Let us know what you decide.  Good Luck!

Kansas 70.3 is a blast! Fairly hilly bike course, flat run course except for one hill. It got hot on the run this year, but hey. It's Kansas And you will definitely notice the humidity if you're from AZ. We camped at the race site this year which was awesome... just rolled out of bed and walked to transition. Oh this year it changed to a 2-transition race. A little different, but no biggie.

Austin 70.3 (Longhorn) is also a pheonominal race - it is October 25 this year. They are also doing a 2-transition race and finishing in an arena!! How cool is that.

Another one in the area is Redman Half (and Full) in Oklahoma City. This year it is September 19. It is a non-IM branded race but extremely well-run. This year it is the Halfmax National Championship race. Bike course is completely flat but the roads are a little under-maintained. That was my only complaint from last year. Great race though for a little less money.

Boise, Lubbock and Austin are all within the same general mileage range from you as Kansas.   You could drive to any of those in 12 to 15 hours.  Many people would consider that to be within driving distance.

If you're in AZ, you aren't that far from Vineman 70.3.  Good race and IM 70.3 branded (if that matters to you).

X2

oh, and the swim is in the Russian River, so no chance of sharks, maybe a high bacteria count, but no sharks!  Chances of heat...which you are used to, but zero humidity!

i did Boise this year - the split transitions was kind of a pain with coordination - but not too bad.  i think it is worth it to do a IM branded race for your first - the support is so awesome and the organization is great too.  the only thing i didn't like about boise was:
1) 2 pm start time (yes, weird)
2) no warm up for the swim (only pro's could warm up)
3) the fact that it rained like crazy!

The aid stations on the run where awesome - gatorade, water, coke, bannanas, pretzels, gels, sponges, etc.  and they must have had 20+ volunteers per station!

Odd odd odd. Why did they do this, anyone know?
That would really deter me...

California is a great race.  The swim is in a protected harbor so no surf.  As for sharks, you just have to go with the odds.

I think they were trying to create a "prime time"/party type of atmosphere for the finish, which was in downtown Boise.  Most of the reactions that I've heard/read from the athletes has been negative, so I wouldn't be surprised if they change it to a normal morning start next year.

Apparently the water was so cold last year that they moved teh race back by 2 weeks and went to an afternoon start - easier to get in the cold water. Well instead we got choppy water and thunder/lightning/hail/rain/headwind.

Another vote for Vineman. GORGEOUS course, flat warm river swim.

Wow...thanks for all the input everyone! I thought I had researched all of the 70.3 races, but apparently not...I had not even heard of Vineman until you guys mentioned it....I think that one just moved up to the top of my list...riding through vineyards would be awesome...and I like that its in a lake! and I can drive! It's at a great time too...July so I've got about ten months to prepare after my Olympic so I think I'll be good....I've still got Kansas in the back of my mind tho...

And while you are looking at Vineman, take a look at Barb's race.  It is a WOMEN ONLY half held the same weekeend as the Vineman full and the same course as the IM 70.3.  I live in southern AZ and that is one of my top three choices for my first HIM.  I am also looking at Longhorn 70.3 in Austin, and Redman in OKC.  Barb's is in August, Redman in Sept., and Longhorn is in Oct.  I consider all three of these in driving distance.

Not sure if you are completely set on an Mdot race or what your timeline is but the Boulder Long Course Triathlon could be an option as well.

How about a non 70.3 branded half?

An excellent Non 70.3 branded is the "MiamiMan" here in South Florida...in November...by this time...low humidity and very fresh....temps in  between 60o and 70o...Very nice...and...for your swimming fear...the swimming is in a very clear crystal lake...and...wet-suit allowed...Very nice!!!

I have raced it since 2005 and I really recommend it...Excellent and very well organized Race....!!!

Check the Web-site: http://miamimantriathlon.com/

Good Luck!!!

Another vote for Vineman.   Swim was great.  It's only 4-7 feet deep, so you can stand up if you need to.  The bike course was the most scenic ride I have ever done.  And the run, although hilly, was well stocked with aid stations, hoses, and volunteers.   The heat probably won't be an issue for you coming from AZ.   Good luck.

Out of the 70.3s I've done I like Timberman, Rhode Island and Cancun; for HIM Mooseman and the Patriot all great races. I am trying Longhorn 70.3 in October this year, pretty much any race directed by Keith Jordan and Endorfun Sports I think it will be a given that the race will be awesome.

I didn't like: Florida 70.3 or Steelhead 70.3. Clearwater 70.3 was ok except for the draft fest...

Vineman Ironman 70.3 the swim is good, the bike is amazing, but the run is hilly and it can be hot, hot, hot.  I will not do this again because of the chance of the hot run.

I did both Vineman and Kansas this year. This was my first year doing Tris. Kansas was good. I didn't find it terribly humid and I am from Denver. The course had better aid stations than Vineman. But I would recommend Vineman over Kansas. First the Vineman swim is in a river and it was smooth as glass. Also, because the river is relatively narrow there are more waves with fewer people so I didn't get pounded on the swim. The ride for Vineman is more scenic than Kansas and a little less challenging. The runs on both are not flat but Vineman is harder and it was hot. It isn't always hot however and it depends on when your wave starts. I wouldn't do Barb's race (I can't anyhow because I'm not a woman), but it seems that Barb's race would be even hotter. The final thing that is great about Vineman is being able to take in the beautiful vineyards after the race.
