Parris Island, South Carolina
United States
Set-up Inc
60F / 16C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 33m 6s
Overall Rank = 85/103
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 3/4
Pre-race routine:

Had coffee, ate a bagel on the way to the race site. Got numbered and chipped and set up my transition area. It didn't seem so complicated this time, all ya need are shoes. And gum. I don't need a hat, I don't need shades, but I can't run without a piece of gum. I was so busy making sure no one forgot anything and being bossy that I had to run back to T1 for my cap and goggles. Doh.
Event warmup:

This is the hyperventilation part. I was enjoying watching other people swim, that I almost missed my slot. I am utterly organized and always on time and I almost blew it. First let me say that to watch Jim swim is hypnotic. He makes it look effortless. Janelle looks like a powerhouse...symetrical and determined. My start time was an hour and twenty four minutes after the first swimmer so I was just pee-pawing around watching stuff. I was waiting for Janelle to exit the pool so I could cheer, when I heard them calling my number. Holy crap. I RAN and got in line and had about 4 minutes until I had to go. No warm-up, no nothin. Nada. The fact that I had no warm-up was messing with my brain. After I started swimming I thought I was going to hyperventilate. I tried talking myself down, found a little rythym and then sucked in a bit of water. I had to switch strokes to cough and regroup, but mentally I was freakin. Nothing ever looked so beautiful than the end of that last lane.
Swim
  • 13m 19s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

I have decided that I am an ocean girl. I'll take the salty, choppy, creepy open water anyday to the liquid hell of a pool swim. No sir, did not like it. And the fact that I did not like it (HATED IT) was freaking me out....I usually LOVE the swim. But, the day got brighter.
What would you do differently?:

Swim in an earlier wave, warm-up, not be freaking out.
Transition 1
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

I was a little discombobulated coming out of the dark, warm pool area to the bright, cool, day. All I remember was cursing the swim, slapping on my socks and shoes and getting out of there. Very quick, pretty smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 42m 24s
  • 13 miles
  • 18.40 mile/hr
Comments:

Thanks to an incredible tour of the bike route the previous day, I knew exactly what to expect. I had a surreal brick thingy happening from my swim to bike which I never expected. But after about 3 miles I found my happy place and laid it down. Caught a few, only passed by one, but pretty much a lonely ride because of the staggered swim start. The few times I wanted to slow down, I really pushed it. I fought the wind and kept my cadence high. The last few bricks I did before the race were quite windy, and I see now how this can help you. Beautiful venue, beautiful day. ***Hey, bike time turned out to be a PB! Yippee! I ranked 53/103 here....my strongest leg. I tied the 2nd place girl on the bike here and was less than two minutes off the winner. Kinda proud.
What would you do differently?:

Less wind, better bike/aerobars. New bike should be here in a week.
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Felt a bit wobbly at T2, but it still went smoothly. Actually, I don't quite remember T2. I was in my zone, baby.
Run
  • 34m 11s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

My goal for this tri was to improve my overall time from my first one (this just being my second) and to not walk on the run. Yay! No walking for this girl. I had no brick legs, felt great out of T2, fixed my hair (yes!) on the run and found my happy place immediately. This allowed me to start 20 seconds faster running mixed with 20 of my funny shufflin girlie runnin. The run into the chute was the best feeling ever. I knew I wasn't going to win, but I knew I had improved and I felt strong and happy.
I took almost four minutes off my run time since my first tri last Sept. Worked hard all winter on this....really want to be faster.
What would you do differently?:

Keep training to get faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, found some gatorade, found some friends. I eventually got changed and headed back for awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My large hiney, poor sleep the night before. Snoop dog and his posse were throwin it down in the hotel room next to mine for most of the night.

Event comments:

I got hardware. Third Athena out of four. I wanted second, but she beat me by eight minutes. The first place girl is a tall, lanky thing and won it in 1:18. I was happy, in the end, to get an award. I felt a bit chagrined to go up there and get an award when there had only been four of us competing against each other. I was proud that I improved my time over my first tri by 7:55 and very proud of my run. I had such a heartwarming time meeting other people (bt'ers, the tnt folks, etc) that enjoy doing the same things I enjoy doing. It's nice to feel like you belong and are a part of something. Everyone was so very genuine and nice, can't wait for the next one. Thanks guys.

Congratulations - that's a nice chunk of change for the time improvement!! What's with the goofy dismount on the bike, though? That's weird. At least you knew to expect it. Anyway, sounds like you had a good time. Good for you!

People need to use the word discombobulated in their RRs more often.

Yes! I was waiting to see your RR.  Congratulations - I love the great perspective of  "I knew I had improved and I felt strong and happy."  Pool swims do suck, but the rest sounds like you really had it dialed in nicely. Great work.

Attagoddess!!!  You pulled  back 7:55 on last year's time?  SEVEN FIFTY FIVE?  That's two 1970's songs!!!  What a fantastic accomplishment!!

If this is what we're to expect for the rest of the season, we're in for a treat.  Well done.

No, she beat me by 8 MINUTES!  If she had beaten me by 8 seconds, I would have shot myself in the foot.

Pee-Paw?  Ha Ha

Hey!  Don't feel anything negative about your hardware.  Any Athena in the world could have entered that race (it was open to all) - - you not only beat the girl in 4th but all those who did not even have the courage to tri!!!!

YOU ROCK!

Hey! Great race! Maybe now you can look back on the start not as "you were so crazy you almost missed your start time" but as "you were so relaxed and composed you had time to root on your friends". If you keep taking 8 minutes off your time every year pretty soon you won't even need to race...
