Subject: Bike Naming
I just don't get it. I've never named a bike. I've owned many, loved a few and hated some other. I've worked in shops for 10 years, been a cyclist since I was a young teenager and have been riding now for over half my life. But I just don't get the naming thing. Perhaps it's because I buy and sell them so frequently that I don't get too attached? But that can't be the case because there are a couple bikes in my stable that I would never, ever sell because I love them too much, still they don't have names other then what they are. Referring to them by either make, model or style.

I am the only one who is a bike nut that doesn't name their bike?

I haven't named any of the bikes I ever owned either, just not that creative.

You're not alone, I can't see the point of naming an inanimate object either.

Never did before ....... but the two latest bikes just seemed appropriate.

Guess it is my wife's influence.  She always names her cars.

I posted this a while ago when a thread was created to help someone name their bike. During the '08 tour one of the vs. commentators kept referring to the guys' bikes as their "machines" and it really clicked for me.

SO, to answer your question you are not alone in not naming your machine....

I named my bike "Black Ice" but I just caller her "hey you".  In truth, I never talk to my bike....I just ride her and leave her in my woodshop with my other tools/toys.

The only place I've ever heard anyone naming their bike is here.  I think if anyone actually referred to their bike with personal proper pronoun, most people would think them a little off their nut.

It's not just on BT that I've heard people do this. There was a lady at our last try club meeting who was trying to sell her bike. After she got up and told us all about the bike she then says, "Oh and her name is ____."

I forget the name, but I just thought it was odd.

And it's not just triathletes. I've heard in from mountain bikers and people dropping of their bikes at the shop for service asking me to take good care of whateverthebikesnameis

I haven't either. I just refer to them as the trek, the cannondale, the summer bike, the winter bike, the cruiser bike, the track bike, etc.

Some people name their motorcycles too. Ships should have names but not bikes. To me, it's a bit corny.

I named my current bike once (The Black Pearl), but then I realized that it really didn't serve me any purpose, especially considering, as Bear previously noted, that it is an inanimate object. So, I have since given up on it and it is merely "my bike."

If you have to name your bikes to keep them straight, you have wayyyyy too many.

I say Jeeves, fetch the Black Pearl from the garage for me as I'm in mood for a spirited ride today and the Great White Ghost is in a state of disrepair.

BITE YOUR TONGUE. I don't name my bikes, but never, ever should the words you have wayyyy too many and bikes be used together. Shame shame.

Yep, I'm with you.  The name of my bike is:

Trek 1500SLR

My Truck name is: Duramax 2500

My mower is: Ariens

However, I (we) did name our kids and dogs.

Naming a bike is like naming a cat.  Neither one will come when called, so what's the point, really.

That's why when my girls each got a cat several years ago and named them, I promptly started to call them "red kitty" and "blue kitty" in honor of the collars they happened to be wearing from the pound.  And now, that's how everyone refers to them. Sometimes they don't even get the full treatment, just "red" and "blue".

I think bike naming comes from being romantic. I think of it like naming my shoes. But then, after all... they tell men in the military to name their weapon. I think of a bike as a tool. Also, whenever I have to fix something.... I talk to it.... cuss it out... sweet talk it... Makes me understand how it's supposed to work better.

But then I'm a person who named his bird dog; Julie. It was a very fitting name. I have two cats named Sam and Brian.

Naming your bike doesn't make you a dork...publicly admitting to complete strangers on an internet forum that you have named your bike makes you a dork

The only thing I have ever said to my bike is "oh, SH*T!" Then I hit the ground and it didn't even say sorry...  so no need to name it for me...  we are not even on speaking terms after that.  Damn you clipless pedals...  *shakes fist in the air*

My bike has a variety of names. Mostly when climbing a steep hill much slower than I'd like. All names are completely unprintable...
