Subject: First Triathlon
Learning about all things triathlon before my first race. This race is total noncompetitive and just for fun. It is a relatively short sprint distance.
Depending on my experience I may do longer and more competitive races in the future.

Plan is to do the whole race in tri shorts.
I am a male with relatively dark hair. Is leg shaving a must when you wear tri shorts?
Any reason I should consider shaving them for my first race since it is a sprint and noncompetitive?
Are hairy legs an issue when body marking?

Any other thoughts and suggestions for first timer.

Good for you, hope you enjoy it. Answers to your questions:

shaving legs - not required

reason to do so - in your situation, none

body marking issues due to hairy legs - none

Enjoy your training, and keep at it. If the swim is an open water swim, that is a whole different animal than in the pool. Practice open water swimming. Brick workouts are your friend. Finally, let us know how it goes!

Agree with above.

Most folks wear tri shorts and a tri top for the entire race, even for Ironman distance triathlons.

Basically pick a training plan that you can stick with and follow it to race day. You don't need the fastest bike, an aero helmet or any of that. Basic bike, tri shorts/top, shoes, socks, racebelt, bike shoes if your bike is clip-in and you are good to go.

Welcome to the sport, don't get too caught up in the gadgets unless it is fun for you. Join a mentor group for more info if you want. I run one, but any will be fine for you.
