Why can't they make a decent horror movie anymore? Apparently, "The Rite" is just the latest in a long line of horror movies in which the trailer looks pretty good but apparently blows, according to the reviews...

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_rite/

Seriously, has there been a good horror movie since "Silence of the Lambs"?

There seem to be lots of decent comedies, dramas, rom-coms, adveture and action movies, even period-dramas. Why can't we get a decent scary movie?

I think I've worn out my "Exorcist" DVD.

Nice to see Rutger Hauer is still alive, though.

I think the whole new genre of horror out of Japan was pretty good...

The ring, the grudge...  etc...

I haven't seen it, but people say that Paranormal Activity was pretty scary.  I saw maybe the first 15 minutes and it "seemed" predictable and it didn't spook me at all and gave up on it.

I recently saw The Last Exorcism and Let Me In. Both were well reviewed and I liked them both--except for the silly ending of LE.

Agreed. The last movie I saw that scared me was ... Poltergeist. In the theater when I was 7.

I'm not into gorefests so movies like Saw and Turistas and such don't do it for me. I did enjoy The Ring but thought The Grudge was stupid. I did go see a theater show, a horror, here in London recently that made you jump.

what really make a good horror film?  isn't that part of the problem?

you are sitting in a movie theater, it isn't like you are going to get someone in a ski mask to jump from the row behind you.

plus, I would submit there is a fundamental differnce between a "horror film" and a "scary movie."  Horror films are about blood, guts, shock.  Scary movies are the ones where when you get in the car to drive home, you check the backseat before climbing in.

i don't think I've ever been "scared" in a movie theater.  but I have watched a movie and been totally freaked out for the rest of the night - but those are usually either Psychological thrillers or anything involving Meg Ryan...

It's not new (1988), but a horror film with an actual story and a great script that still haunts me is the original Dutch version of The Vanishing.

Saw it. In fact, just discussed it with my wife this past weekend. We were both disappointed. The American version was worse.

I agree, and that seems to be a theme lately...IE the foreign version is better than the "Hollywood" version.

Just to throw out 2 we watched recently..."Let The Right One In" was better than "Let me In".

And "Rec" we thought was better than "Quarantine"

Unrelated to Foreign v. Hollywood:

We saw "Session 9" last week and it's extremely creepy, which as others have said is about as much as you can hope for in a horror movie these days.

I wonder if they made him sleep with the TV on in his bedroom as well that night?

My daughter was so scared by "The Witches" (a kids movie, based on a Roald Dahl book) that she still gets upset if it is on TV and changes the channel.  She was also scared after "Open Water" and "Secret Window" - because they could happen. Horror movies like "the Ring" and "The Grudge" did nothing to her since they are too supernatural to be scary for her these days. (Maybe life with me is worse than creepy spirits trying to kill you?)

MY older brother and his friends. I thought we were going to see Bambi. What a dbag.

Actually, now that I think of it, he took me to see Bambi when I turned 18. A different, more busty Bambi. I guess he's not all bad.

I did like "Let the Right One In". That was a good movie. "Paranomal Activity" was decent.

Also, to the earlier poster, I guess I would define a "scary" or "horror" movie as having a supernatural/otherworldly element to it.

Like mr2tony, I don't go for the torture/gore movies, which I see as a different genre.

I think what I'm really waiting for is a really good devil/exorcism/rampaging ghost movie. They seem to make a lot of them ("Lost Souls", "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", "The Last Exorcism", "An American Haunting", that Hillary Swank one) but they just seem to all be bad.
