Subject: Tri Bike or Road Bike for IMWI
I been trying to get used to riding my tri bike so when IMWI comes up I will be ready and prepared. I talked to a guy who is doing IMWI and has done it several times and he told me if your not a good bike handler (which I am not) I should use a road bike over the tri bike.

Now I am not sure if I should try to get used to the tri bike for IMWI or if I should stick mainly to the road bike.

Fitted?

T.I.T.S will make you more comfortable.  I'm riding the loop this coming Sun.  Come on up.  I'm taking it easy for a nice stroll.  You can get some time in and get used to the terrain.

If you have both, go up and ride the course.  Decided which one is more comfortable for you to ride.

Most importantly, ride the bike that will get you out the door and riding more, which is what you need to do if you don't want another DNS/DNF.

You still have nothing in your logs.  If you have time to post this question, you have time to log at a minimum time/distance for your workouts.

Ya know, there WAS someone out there this year on a hybrid...if your bike handling skills are that bad (which you have a whole year to work on, so riding in general might be useful), that's always an option.

Either one will work if you ride it.  I remember you mentioning before that you really only ride the trainer.  You HAVE to get outside and start working on those handling skills.  As Coredump mentioned-start logging so people can give you feedback.

Well I read that a hybrid is against the WTC rules or was it the NAS rules.

I will admit I find it alot easier to ride my roadie. I am trying to HTFU and get used to the aero posistion because I know being aero is huge over 112 miles.

would aero bars on the roadie make it easier to get used to the tri bike's aero bars?

I agree with the T.I.T.S. I know I need to live on the bike and I been working on it. I figure I should get good at the bike I am going to use.

You are overthinking.  At this point, aero vs. non-aero doesn't matter if you are not riding.

Ride first.  Just ride.  Pick one.  Flip a coin.  Stop stalling and ride.  Ride a lot.  Log your workouts.  Do that first, *then* start thinking about other things you can do to make yourself faster.

+1 - Just ride your bike, being aero on a trainer isn't even comfortable anyway. Just ride whatever is easiest through the Spring, then worry about 'which bike'

I'm more comfortable on my road bike. I trained on it and since Kentucky is hilly I decided to take it to Kentucky. Didn't even do clip-on aero bars. Just a straight road bike. I even had a Cervelo tri bike at home I could have taken. Opted for the roadie.

112 miles on a road bike is fine. The guys in the Tour de France do it day after day.

Of course, being comfortable on any bike for that many miles is all about training. I was comfortable on it, because I had done many 80-90-100 mile rides on it. Oddly though, on race day, for the last 15 miles or so, my torse was so sore, I couldn't even bend over anymore to get into the drops.

It's all about what you are comfortable on in the end.

thanks everybody. I am going to use the Roadie for now. I think it will be more confortable and easier to get in my t.i.t.s in that I need because I know I need alot. I am trying to remember that I should do atleast 50% of my work outs on the bike.

Good call.  Just remember to log 100% of your workouts.

We're pushy, because we want to see you succeed.  IMWI is something achievable, but it takes a concerted effort, it's not something you can fake or cram for starting next July.  The work starts now.

I totally agree - plus, it's amazing to see how much you rack up over the year when you look at your totals! I'm just getting into more regular training the last few months and I'm over 1200 miles on my bike.  I can't believe it! So it's fun to look back and see your progress.

95% engine / 5% equipment.

The difference in a tri bike or road bike or hybrid or $5k bike or $1k bike might change your IM finish time by minutes, not hours.

One cannot gain admittance to the very exclusive IM club w/o paying the dues....and it all boils down to training and putting in the miles.

Go up and ride the course with both bikes. You are close enough that you can go up and back in a day.

i have heard both sides, but heard more that a Road set up is easier for the hills.

Most important as stated
- Rde - Log - Repeat

With my recommendation, I am going to ride my tri bike, I rode the roadie in 2007 and was comfortable, in 09 - I'll try something different

That's exactly my point.  You can do it on a tricycle (ok, that's going too far) for all that it matters, but you HAVE to get out there and ride.  Period.

Ride til your butt can't handle it and then do it again and repeat for another 350 or so days.

Just ride is the magic solution. If you can log 1500-2000 miles between now and next summer then come on back and have a big ole discussion about what will save minutes  on your IM time.

We're all behind you on this and want to hear your name called next Sept.!

Ya think?

From 0 to 1500 miles in the space of 4 months?  Seriously?

For once, just train smart.  Going all gang busters on the base you have (which we still don't see in your logs) isn't going to do you any good, either.
