Through our daughters high school we will be hosting a French student for two weeks. We pick her up at the airport tonight. Just looking for some ideas or suggestions from anyone that may have hosted previously. The school has a number of activities planned and my wife does also.

Suggestions on food?

If she says she can't speak English but hangs out helping the neighbor fix up his '68 Camaro SS all day, then something's up.

Just sayin' ...

For a REAL answer:

I dont know exactly how much has changed since we did the French exchange student thing, but "real" food seemed to be more of a hit. I mean, they're from France, not Mars Just feed them whatever normal Americans eat, but maybe less junk?? I know ours weren't big into the junk/processed stuff, except maybe as a treat. But, if your area is known for any special cuisine or food or dish, that's a good thing. I'm from Upstate NY,  so we took them apple picking, made pie from the apples and got them real maple syrup and maple sugar candy and they thought that was cool - they took some back with them (syrup and candy, not apples).

Just feed her with what your family usually eat, unless she has special request.  I bet someone who participate in an exchange program would want to try out food that is typical to that country.  Same for activities. Don't overwhelm her.  Would be nice to show her how a typical American family life is like.

We hosted a German exchange student for a month when I was in high school.  It ended up being an excellent experience and I ended up going over to Germany several times to visit him... we still keep in touch some 20+ years later.

One of the things I remember that he was really excited about was going to see Lake Erie.  We lose sight of their size and importance.  But since you are in OH, it wouldn't be crazy hard to see it.  We also took him to see Niagara Falls, but again we had him for a month.  THAT floored him.

I once hosted a Japanese exchange student for 6 weeks.  It was a blast!  I agree with a couple of the posts above.  You don't really need to change much.  She's here to see how American life is, show it to her.

I lived in upstate New York at the time.  She had NO IDEA how life was up there.  She though New York was the city.  We took her there, of course, and she loved it.  Not sure how far Chicago is from you, but maybe thats an option?

I hosted and went to France on an exchange in HS.  I would guess the program will keep your schedule fairly full, but otherwise just try & see some sights & do some normal every day stuff.  Take them on errands, food shopping with you (I love checking out supermarkets when I'm in a foreign country), that kind of stuff.

My girlfriend's family once hosted an Italian exchange student. They really liked going to Taste of Chicago, not for the food, but to take pictures of morbidly obese Americans. They were fascinated by the sight of people far larger than they had ever seen before.

We have hosted 4 French students, 2 Swiss students and 1 from Brazil. You will have a great time hosting them.

Have your normal everyday meals. They will not be normal for them.
Visit the local sites in your area.
All my students loved going to the grocery store. Their stores are usually much smaller and not the supermarkets that we have here in the states.
Treat them like a member of the family, not a guest.
Talk with them and find out what is different here vs there. A lot of times they will have a lot more freedom to move around and go to clubs than teens in the states do because their clubs cater to the teens.

You will have a great time. Maybe next time you'll get one for the whole year. We started out with must a month and moved up to having 3 for a year (different years of course.)

Reminds me of the old Married with Children episode where the Bundy's hosted a French exchange student so they could get $500 a month and they made her live in the garage.

We did this last year.  Hardly had to cook (maybe once) cause the kids were never home.  All the host students and exchange students hung out together the entire time and it rarely in the house.

What about a huge Louisianna style barbecue?? I mean fried pickles, endless racks of ribs, a mountain of pulled pork, corn bread and beans.  Foot in mouth

Get her out of her comfort zone, I think many people travel for that reason.
