Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Saw this with my 17 year old son and his friend, my ex, and her friend yesterday. Expected to be entertained by a typically violent Quentin Tarantino movie wand as shocked at how good this movie turned out to be. In the end, it's a love story! It's one of the best movies I have seen in a very long time. I walked out wanting to see it again. Cinematography and acting are superb. The violence and language are shocking yes, but what lends them their impact is the reality of the pre-Civil War South. It's set two years before the Civil War, the single bloodiest event in our nations history. This movie is painful at times to watch because every act of violence upon African-Americans portrayed in this movie did occur. IMO there is much less violence-for-violence sake than in other Tarantino movies, and much more plot and character development. There is also one scene involving the Klan and a planned lynching that only QT could turn into several minutes of hilarity. And the director does make a short appearance in the movie towards the end. |

But didn't you get the feeling some of that was deliberately done to break up some of the very heavy scenes involving slavery? Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't know if there were any breaks from the slavery theme. I heard the film is up for an award from the NAACP. I found that interesting, espeically after watching the movie. Then again, the movie treated slavery very bluntly.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It was indeed a great movie - and I do want to see it again. Maybe not his best movie (hard to beat Pulp Fiction) but most definitely awesome. I think Samuel L Jacksons role was awesome and he played it like a pro. I was surprised at how bad (out of shape) Quentin looked. I had to look twice to make sure it was him. He should take up triathlons...... |

He didn't see it, but he can comment on it? The movie is the opposite of disrespectful. It's an incredibly powerful anti-slavery movie. As was pointed out, it's up for an NAACP Image Award. When my kids went to the Holocaust Museum I told them their great-grandmother was in Bergen-Belsen, and her husbands father, my great grandfather's brother, was in the first wave of Allied soldiers to liberate Auschwitz. It's all pretty horrible history, but they need to know that so it doesn't ever happen again. |

You will also see reviews and commetns from a number of African Americans that found the movie offensive. I am not trying to tell anyone how to spend their entertainment money, and as I said I have enjoyed every other QT movie I have seen, but I will not be spending anything on this one. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris Waltz best of the movie, but not sure about the Rockies, Lever Action Rifles, sunglasses. It did have some interesting action....but started to really drag in latter part of movie Not Academy quality. Disjointed, hodgepodge. James Remar does two roles? Scenes are very unrealistic. shoots the white women and she flies backwards at the wrong angle... Too much Over Hype. Edited by BellinghamSpence 2013-01-06 11:16 PM |

He is well known for having all kinds of things thrown into his movies, over-the-top violence, and sly humor. If you are looking at it as a realistic history, you will be sadly disappointed - it's not Lincoln. The washed colors and 70's era typeface in the credits are the clue it is more of an updated blaxploitation film, similar to Jackie Brown, but set in the civil war. I saw it this weekend - I liked it . Mrs gearboy opted out, and would have hated it - she strongly dislikes violence (she won't let me watch Breaking Bad if she is in the room; and walked out of the movie Excalibur when we were first dating about 5 minutes into it due to the violence).I saw it as a sort of bookend to Inglourious Basterds - a twist on actual historical events, with a strong revenge fantasy element. I think DiCaprio captures the modern thought process when he asks (though not his answer) "why don't the black people just kill us?" |
