So, not doing so much training at the moment but going over a ton of race possibilities. I also have some off-season training goals.

So, the questions, fellow Ontarians:

1. What are you doing with yourself tri-training wise for the winter?  Base building? Strength training?
2. Which races are you planning?

Off season training:

I am hoping to do some work on improving my swim and bike.  Looking at maybe getting a swim coach for a few sessions to give me some pointers and drills (anybody know/work with any good ones?).

I am getting a bike fit in the next two weeks and hope to my trusty road bike fitted with aerobars and we'll then start getting acquainted again for some serious movie watching on the trainer.

But I always fall back to running.  that's what I am doing at the moment. Gaining back some lost fitness after a low-mileage summer (for me) and then the insanity of the fall.

Races:

So many:

March Around the Bay - 4th go - I'll have see in about a month if a PB is even a reasonable goal :S
April:   Maybe the 21k de Montreal?
May: Mercedes 10k in Oakville - a bunch of us did this last year - are you in again? And victoria's du - i like this event a lot
September: Muskoka 70.3 (again)
October: maybe the Niagara half marathon?

I do want to do a couple of shorter subaru or msc tri's but haven't decided yet ... i've done guelph lake and toronto island the last two years and wouldn't mind some different races.

As far as training goes, I run a lot (love winter training!)
But, I REALLY need to get stronger on the bike.
(so, lots of spin classes for me this winter)
then focus on WAY more bricks this spring/summer.

As for 2011...
-see you at ATB in March (just my 2nd time)
- possibly the Goodlife full in May
- 75k ride for heart in June
- Welland sprint in early July (want to do this one in advance of attempting the HIM in Welland in 2012)
- Bluewater Oly in mid-to-late July
- Midsummer 30k in August
- possibly the Wasage Oly in Sept
& finally
- the STWM (full) in Oct
(or NYC if they accept me this year!) Innocent

My 2011 is already set Laughing

Not really an off season for me.  Still running to maintain fitness, and also doing some bike intervals on the trainer.  Going to start learning to swim again next week, and official run training for the Around the Bay 30k starts in 3 weeks.

My season just ended two weeks ago at IMFL, so I'm taking it easy until the new year.  Not doing anything crazy.

I REALLY need to focus on the bike at some point, so I was thinking of Jorges Winter Cycling program.  Also thinking about attempting a PB this spring at the Run for Retina half in London.  I would like to to ATB, but honestly training for that distance in the winter just does not sound appealing to me.  I'm going to see if I can find a partner and do the 15 K relay (any takers?  my goal time would be 1:20ish for 15 km).

Next summer I'm thinking about going for a 1/2 PR 6:14 at Welland this year.  I would really like to get 6:00.

Or  I might just get pregnant instead

I want to switch from duathlon to triathlon so my number one goal over the winter is to get some swimming lessons becuase that area needs alot of work for me. Second thing I'll be doing is spending alot of time on the trainer to get stronger and faster on the bike. Third would be letting my injuries heal.

As for 2011 races

March - Chilly Half Marathon
May - Waterloo Half Marathon
- Victoria Duathlon
June - Guelph Lake
July - Welland HIM
- Belwood
Aug - Cobourg
Sept - Guelph Lake II

Things may change depending on how the swim lessons go. I'd love to do Muskoka 70.3

I just found out about it a few weeks ago. It's within 30 minutes of my house so I thought there's no way I can pass it up. There's nowhere near the amount of people in it as there are in the marathons in Toronto or hamilton so I think it makes for a more relaxed atmosphere and perfect for a newbie marathoner.

Hi All,  I've enjoyed my two week off season, after IMFL.  just got the ok to start running again,  i pinched a verve during the IM that forced a mostly walk marathon.  Still no too happy about that.

Winter plans focus on improving my fitness.  Lots of swimming, strength training,  particularly for my separated shoulder (next years IM is non wet suit legal). Looking for a good treadmill to assist with running speed and endurance.  I figure I may as well try to qualify for Boston while i'm at it.  Bike training, criterium race video 3 times a week. and finally lots of core work.

planned events:
- chilly 1/2 marathon
- around the bay
- Mississauga marathon
- Peterborough 1/2 IM
- IM louisville

I'll be doing a shorter race or two,  leaving that up to some co-workers who want to try their first triathlon and would like me to help them along the way.

Waterloo Half - I live in waterloo, have done the half marathon twice. Both times it was raining and cold. The course is anything but flat, and the event organization is not the best. Washrooms being the biggest problem. I was in a washroom lineup until about 3minutes before the start. I went to the washroom, ran to my car threw my jacket I was wearing in there (keeping me warm before the race). Then the gun went off, I ran back to the start, and, well, everyone was gone. Lucky for me, it is a chip timed event, so I still managed a PB (note: PB was based on just 1 other 1/2 marathon race that I did several years prior).

Off-season training: well balanced training program to improve in all 3 disciplines of triathlon, strength and stability training 3x per week (mostly to aid in injury prevention).

Next seasons races:
30k ATB
Mississauga Marathon
Guelph Lake OLY
*Drive to Lake Placid, volunteer, sign up for 2012*
Bracebridge 1/2 Iron
Muskoka 70.3
Centurion in Collingwood

I'm not sure that I would do the full at Waterloo.  I did the half there back in 2005 and there were very few people that did the full (like well under 100).  It would be dead out there on the second loop.  The half is nice though, some rolling hills through the countryside near conestoga.  with a couple of more challenging hills.

That sucks that you had to walk most of the marathon   you were looking so strong when you passed me on the bike.  Hopefully IMLoo will go much better for you.

When I woke up on Sunday morning (and couldn't move) I could not imagine having to get in a car and drive back to Toronto.  I hope you had a safe drive and that your muscles weren't too bad.

The route changed a bit in the last few years.  Mainly the starting point and now the full at Waterloo is a one loop course.  It goes along the half route for maybe 10k then splits and rejoins the half route with about 8k to go.  It's a small event.  Probably around 500 people (half+full).  Washrooms were a bit of a problem last time I did it.  The course has rolling hills.  Not flat by any means.

i had a geeat drive,  thanks for asking.  Having to walk was not part of the plan, I exited T2 in my goal time, which is the positive I'll take away and build on for Louisville.  sorry but there was very little Sunday pain, the walking really helped with that, I'd flushed most of the  lactic acid.

2011 will be my second season of tris and my current training looks like this for now; 'Swim 3 mornings/week about 1k each, bike on rollers 3 times/week-1 high cadence spins, 1 intervals, 1 time trial, run 4 nights/week...and commuting to work on my cross bike a couple days per week.

Plans for 2011

July Belwood fat tire try a tri-my favorite from last year
August Niagara (Grimsby) sprint

hopefully more but we'll see how things go with kids/work/sleep/chocolate binges

In 2008, the race did start/finish at the RIM park.  In 2010 it started/finished at Bechtel Park.  There were two porta-potties and two washrooms (one man's, one woman's) at the park's facilities.  I was standing in the washroom line the last 15 mins before the start, and with few minutes to go, I decided to jog to the bushes instead.  When the race started, I still saw people standing in the washroom line.

I ran the half in 2008 and 2010.  The moved start IMO makes the course tougher, as starting/finishing at RIM park, makes the last 5K all downhill and you can fly down it.  Not anymore with the new start point.

Summary of the 2010 half course:  there's a very steep downhill within the first 2k, then slight incline for the next 3-4k, then onto rolling hills.  Then the longest climb of the course (the climb to Conestogo, it's about 1.5-2k ending at around 13k, it stings quite a bit), then downhill on northfield.  Once you turn onto university you'll get three more short sharp hills in the last 5k.

I have created an annual training plan for 2 different sets of planned 2011 races... and now I think I might change again. I'm glad I wrote in pencil! Maybe I will just leave it as is and write a new one at the start of January so that my plan starts when the year does - as well as this is when I wanted to get more serious.

Currently I am running outdoors 3x a week and plan to maintain this throughout the winter, preparing for the Chilly Half Marathon March 6. I just bought a spinner so I will also be doing that 3x a week. Planning to re-integrate some strength training into my program at the start of November, and focus on cleaning up my nutrition. Swimming... my limiter... we should be getting back together in January if I get approved for the apartment I just put in an application for that has an indoor pool.

Going to do a 1/2 mary early this year - either Missisauga or Ottawa in May.  Maybe around the bay - but probably not.  I think about it every year and then decide it's too early.  I'm going to race the WRACE series this upcoming year tho - try to hit all the 5ks.  I had some good times for that distance this year and I'd like to work on my speed at that distance.

I'm going to do Welland 1/2 this year.  I changed my plan last year and did Steelhead again - while I had a great race - I would have liked a change of scenery.  I'm excited about this race and I'm hoping to smash my PR.

Other than that I'm going to do Leamington and then maybe a full aquabike in Sept. at Cedar Point.

I'm sort-of training but I feel like a sloth in Nov-Jan just because it's cold, I'm not really motivated and it's dark. I know it will pick up in the new year - but this time of year sucks.  I did, however, buy a scale this year so I can prevent the 15lbs that I seem to accumulate in the winter...

Welland is a very fast course with the exception of the extra run into T1.  The water is basicaly a big outdoor swimming pool, the bike is almost entirely flat (one hill that you have to go over twice) and a fairly easy run course.  The problem on the run this year was the heat, only about 6 or 7 km of the run course are at all shaded and the shade isn't even that good as there isn't much shade at noon.

I'm thinking I'm going to be back again this year to try for a big PR as well.  Did 6:14 this year and I have my eye on 5:59:59.

The run at Steelhead out of the water up the beach about 100m sucks too... Then transition is SO huge ...

Yes - this is why I want to do this race - flat and fast. I know Steelhead is said to be "flat" but it's more "rolling" when you're coming from Southern Ontario...

You're right tho - June/July can be brutal for heat here.  I love training in it - but not sure how it's going to work for a 1/2.  Steelhead has been cool both years I've done it.
