New user  23 |  Subject: How do you justify a new bike?So, how do you justify a new tri bike to your wife, when you just bought your first road bike in March? My roadie is a triple and I have considered upgrading to a double with an ultegra groupset, but ... a new tri bike would round out my collection nicely! I mean, who couldn't use an additional bike, right? |

I "need" a cross bike so I can start commuting to work on something that I don't mind slogging through rough roads and all weather. Undfortunatley her response usually goes something like, "Well I need new purses and shoes." Come to think of it, I got off easy by comparison! As for actually justifying it, if you can afford it, go for it. If you have to go into debt, wait until you can afford it. |

May never notice that there are two. I do this with wheels. They just all hang in the garage. Tough to tell when there is another on the hook. Gordon |

I purchased it and told her after the fact. Don't do that. The money wasn't the issue but letting her know in advance would have been the right thing to do. You could let her pick out the color and then it would feel like shopping for her and what woman doesn't like to shop? |

I'm only in my 2nd year of triathlon'ing...bought my first roadie - a Trek 2100 WSD, in March '08. But the Trek wasn't a good fit for me (too big) and therefore, caused me lots of pain issues on both long and short rides. Riding became unenjoyable and "a chore". Tried getting a professional bike fit done on my Trek, but was told the bike was just too big for me and was recommended to look into a smaller frame bike. That is how I justified and ultimately ended up with the Cervelo. |

After our retirement account contributions, whatever is left over stays in our personal accounts to do with whatever we'd like. I then break my personal savings into separate accounts - one of them is a savings account for my fitness items. The system works great and there's no need to justify any personal purchases as long as we aren't incurring credit card debt. I couldn't support my running (and soon to be tri) habits without this system. |

Then she put a bike computer on it, and had the aero bars/cables trimmed. There is no validation for new bikes, unless you are podium bound. However, the financial commitment that we have made in thise sport makes it harder to skip training. |

If your financially solid enough to actually AFFORD a new bike, without going into deeper debt, than you should be able to buy it without justification. But you could make up something, for example, I personally could stand to lose 15-20 lbs. My wife would like me to do so. Perhaps I could make a deal, when I lose the equivalent weight of a Cervelo or Felt tri bike, then I can justify the bike as a reward. Gotta lose 18 to get a bike that only weighs 18..... Haven't tried that one yet, if I do I'll let you know how it goes.  |
