Subject: my poor puppy!

I know a lot of my fellow BTers will be able to sympathize with me on this.

Our younger dog Kora (7ish years old) decided to jump off of our deck on Saturday morning. neither my wife or I were right next to her so we don't know what she saw but she never showed any inclination before to jump up on the 3.5 foot high rail or even chase anything on the ground. needless to say we heard her cries of pain right away and ran to her. I was able to pick her up gently and run her up to our car where my wife met me and we sped off to the 24hour vet hospital (6:30 AM). an hour later and several xray and we learned she basically shattered her right front humorous just above the elbow joint. the vet hospital did not have an orthopedic surgeon who felt they could handle that break so they called all to local vets they knew.

luckily he found one and we drove her right over (luckily she was sedated still from the x-rays). they got her stabilized and kept her for overnight. Sunday morning the surgeon came in to do surgery. she was under anesthesia and in surgery for about 5 hours as he repaired her. now today we were able to get bring her home. she has a plate, 6 pins, a bone graft and several other things going on but surprisingly had no other injuries from it.

here we are though, a three day weekend for which we had a lot of stuff planned, and we spent the entire time worried about our poor dog   I will say that in keeping busy trying to keep my mind off of her we did get a lot of general housework and cleaning done. now my wife is taking tomorrow off of work, I am going to take off Wednesday and Thursday, and my wife is taking off Friday also so we can monitor her this whole week and make sure she is okay.

An injured/sick dog makes you realize how utterly dependent we are upon one another.  There a people who get it and those that don't.  Sounds like you have gotten her great care and are doing right by her. It sucks, but she sounds resilient.  Hang in there.

Oh my gosh!  Poor thing.  That cast makes me so sad!  I remember when our now 8 yr old dog was around 2 and he tore the tendons in his knee jumping off of the couch.  I thought it couldn't have been that bad, but I felt terrible.  We drove him from Dayton, OH to Cincinnati to have the surgery done.  It broke my heart to see him hobble around for months.

I know how you feel, they are my kids, and I would do anything for them.  I hope she heals up and feels better soon!

Oh, poor thing!  And poor you guys!  It's so hard when they are sick/injured.  I'm glad you were able to get her taken care of quickly.  Hope her pain is well controlled.  Is that a cast too, or just a bandage over the incision?

She has a hard splint with a cast and a bandage over it. 2-4 weeks with this. 10-16 weeks total recovery.

Oh no, poor baby
I absolutely sympathize. I had a thread 3 or 4 weeks ago about my parents' dachshund mix herniating a disc in his back while I was dog-sitting - requiring back surgery. I visited them/him tonight... he is soooo sloooowly recovering. He just this week started to put some weight on his hind legs. He can stand for 5-8 seconds before collapsing and sill cannot walk. He is doing regular and water therapy, and still cannot pee on his own. It's hard to see all of his spunk gone, but it will be back.

Glad to hear an update and that he is coming along, albeit slowly.  Isn't it amazing how they work so hard?  Brings tears to my eyes.

Hang in there!  You may want to see if they will teach you how to change the bandage, that way you won't have to take her in each time.  You are great pet parents for taking such good care of her and she loves you for it!!

I know how tough this can be, our little princess had pancreatitis about a month ago.

I'm so sorry for your pup, I hope for quick recovery. My wife and I had to deal with that with our little kitty. She got her leg twisted in the rungs of a kitchen chair. (Coming from someone who doesn't have kids) There is nothing more heart wrenching than when your fur-baby cries out in pain. My suggestion is get her some of her favorite treats and keep her on the pain killers. Our little girl was walking around after a few weeks pegged-legged. We had weekly vet visits to check on the leg and reposition it as needed.

It is amazing how resilient animals are, stay positive and it will all work out

Picture of my furbaby giving us the "look".

Wishing Kora a quick recovery...

I know how difficult it is to see them in pain.  Mine recently had to go through a deep dental cleaning and a grow removal behind her ear which is considered pretty routine and i wasnt able to function at work until i picked her up in the afternoon.

Justin -

I'm so sorry for Kora. Sometimes they just don't get why we don't want them doing things :-/ But so glad you could get her all fixed up! I couldn't imagine going through that!

And keep in mind - if you need anything, we're just "down the road"...I don't work full-time so I'd probably be available for a morning or afternoon or day :-

Aww thanks! It is hard. We had to run her back to the vet last night to get it resplinted and wrapped and then spent a restless night with her on the living room floor. her pain seems to be well controlled at least but our biggest issue is getting her to go potty. She has not peed since yesterday morning!

If we do need anything I will definately PM you.

And Thanks BT, I always know someone on here understands when something bad happens!

Aw, poor baby!

But...YOUR DOG HAS HARDWARE! :D

My dog tore both of her ACLs.  She looked so miserable the first week after surgery.  But, she bounced back both times after about a week and looked/felt a lot better even if the actual recovery did take a few months after that.

Pets are just like people and children...they get hurt...and never when you expect it!  There's never a convenient time to get hurt.

I hope your baby feels better!

Thanks. she is doing better, walking more with her hard cast each day. however she is apparently one of the more stubborn dogs the vet has seen in that she refuses to go pee. If she does not go by tomorrow morning, even on muscle relaxants, she will have to be sedated tomorrow and get a catheter. it seems to be one little thing after another

It's so hard for the females to find their balance to pee on 3 legs.  Poor wee bubba, I hope she figures it out, catheters are no fun!  Glad to hear she is doing better otherwise though!  Sorry you are having all this to deal with!

Tell that to my crazy Jack Russell.  She commonly pees on 3 legs and I have seen her, more than once, raise herself up on just her front legs briefly while peeing.  She's a strange little dog.

That aside, I do hope Kora is continuing to heal and recover and won't need a catheter.  That would surely be an even worse nightmare than a cast! Hugs for Kora!!
