ZOOT has their first entry into the active calf sleeve market. They sent me a pair to try out. I am very excited about these. I love the socks for training and recovery but they are very difficult to put on. I worry that the amount of time it might take me to put them on in T1 or T2 will negate any benefit of their use. I think the science behind compression is coming along, but if it takes my 1:00 to put them on when I am tired and wet, I don't see me making that time up. Now these won't provide the same complete compression benefit as the feet are to covered, but I can wear these under a wet suit, so they can be put on before the race and I wear them all day. I'll be giving them a try and will report back.

I saw someone wearing these yesterday at a race and was intrigued. Let us know what they're like.

Bryan needs all the circulation in his head that he can get.

Here's something for you Bryan to assist you in getting the Zoot socks on.

I got the recovery tight in time for the weekend; they feel really good on your legs after the weekend bike. I used them for about 5 hours. I ended up going with size 1, they fit nice and snug. They hardest part is getting my foot in that stir-up. I can't wait to use them during the winter months:-) I dropped some good words about you in the comment box, might get you some brownie points.

These are not going to help in that area as they stop just above your ankles. The full socks might be something you want to consider.

..and thanks for the good word, Trevor!

OK, went for my first run in them. Very comfortable. They are designed in very similar fashion to the recovery tights. They clearly provide less overall compression than the socks but I think they are a great compromise between the benefits of the socks vs. the issue's with getting them on in a race. These might be a better race option for faster Transition times. Zoot also just showed the colors they will be offering.

They had these in the tent at IMLP.  I had a pair picked up as I have shin issues, but I wasn't fond of the material.  They felt like they would hold a lot of water if worn under the wetsuit.  I ended up going with the 2XU sleeves, but afterwards I kicked myself for not getting the Zoot ones.

I'm anxious to hear how you like them and what you think they'd be like when wet.

Physiologically, the sleeves kinda defeat the purpose IMHO. Compression is by no means a new thing in my line of work, where I prescribe compression stockings on a daily basis for venous stasis, varicose veins, lymphedema, etc.

If the issue is venous return, compressing the calf without compressing the foot will likely just lead to swollen, tired, achy feet. I know it's not the same population of people, but in general it's bad to leave the foot uncompressed if you're compressing the rest of the calf.

I don't disagree with that at all. My only issue with the socks is they are very hard to put on in T1 or T2. The time spent putting them on is likely any benefit made up on the course, IMO. The sleeves "seem" to offer a compromise I can wear an whole race. In regard to wearing them under wet suit or sweating in general, these do not retain the water as much as the full socks.

So what is the purpose of these compression socks/sleeves? Preventing "venous return" of what? Lactic acid or something? Sorry is this is a stupid question.

For wetsuit legal races why not just wear them the entire race? The 2XU I have dries very quickly.

Right, Dan, that what I am saying. I wouldn't wear compression socks during the swim but these could be under your wet suit and they don't retain water at all, at least they didn't retain a lot of sweat when I ran in them and it was hot.

I just wanted to bump this. I have spent more time running in these as well as biking and must say they feel great, provide great compression, and I ran 45.5 miles this week in them and my legs feel very good. For what it's worth, I like them and will race in them from now on.

I recently got a pair and like them more than the 2ZU ones I had been wearing. I'm planning on using them for IM Canada next Sunday. I've worn them under my wetsuit, riding and running to test them out and been happy with them.

From a muscular stand point yes in terms of compression, but I am not aware of how they might prevent an injury like PF. Maybe DereKL will chime in with the medical opinion.
