Subject: stress dreams
I know you've had them: You dream that your back in high school and you forgot to study for a test or you can't find your locker. Something like that. I was a majorette in high school and ever since I will periodically dream that it is halftime and I can't find my baton! (ha!)

Anyway, last night was a first. A triathlon stress dream! I dreamed that I was on the bike course and realized that I didn't have on any shoes and I was trying to keep my feet on the pedals and somehow control it without shoes. THEN I was on the run course (still barefooted) and the course wasn't marked and I didn't know where to go. Just kind of running aimlessly down a trail...

So, my question for you: Do you have a recurring dream when you're under stress? Ever have one with a triathlon theme?

I have the same dream of my teeth falling out. I'm pretty sure its because I grind them in my sleep, but in my cream I always loose them one by one at the most horrible times.

I used to have school performance dreams all the time, probably because I hated how I did in college, spending not enough time studying and too much time in the pool and at parties. But I went back to school a few years ago to work on my Masters in chemistry (my old arch enemy). I made As, and haven't had the dreams since.

I dream my teeth fall out, too. Not sure what that's about.

My sister has the same recurring dream, so I had looked it up on line for her in the past.

I've looked it up before too, it has nothing to do with the appearance theory, is closer to this one:

"Teeth are used to bite, tear, chew and gnaw. In this regard, teeth represent power. And the loss of teeth in your dream may be from a sense of powerlessness. Are you lacking power in some current situation? "

I usually have this dream when I'm stressed out and don't know where I'm going or when I'm nervous about a situation that I don't know the outcome.

I'll have dreams about being caught in a tornado and not being able to run. It's like I'm trying to run but don't go anywhere.  and of course I have the dreams about not being prepared for a test, forgetting my locker combination, showing up to high school wearing rollerskates instead of shoes, my teeth falling out or missing.  During tri season I get tri nightmares.  Like I don't have gels, my bottle sof water, getting a flat, forgetting my goggles, etc.

Ah, there are lots of us with the teeth dream I think... it's horrible.  They fall out one at a time and I can feel it and spit them out. *shiver* I had read that it was related to feeling out of control... a little different than powerlessness, but the same idea of stress. Oh man, that dream is awful. Fortunately, I've gotten a wee bit better at my stress management only get it 1-2 times a year.

My tri related nightmare was right before my first race.  2 weeks out, I was visiting a friend in Seattle. While I was there, I knew I wanted to get in 1-2 workouts to ease my mind, but when I didn't, I had the dream.  I went through the whole race, but forgot to put on my timing chip.  Since I didn't have an official time, no one believed I actually did it. I was crushed.

I've had two triathlon dreams.  The first one I've had a few times.  I'm getting ready to swim, the course is a long canal, and everyone has already started while I look for my goggles.

In the second dream I go back to a building to retreive something that seems important, and when I get back I can't find my spot in the transition area.  That dream is strange because the transition area is set up so that the triathletes are in a big circle and my stuff is obscured by some bushes (lousy spot I got as usual).

Before IMC in 2003 I had a dream that the forest fires in the area had forced the race organizers to change the bike course to a multiple lap (criterium like) course through downtown. There were people assigned to keep track of your laps and when I finished my required laps the official told me I had one more.

I argued my point and then did my last lap and went out on the run (which was the normal out and back course). A couple of miles before the turnaround a race official pulls up to me and informs me they realized I was correct about how many bike laps I did and told me I could turnaround at that point to make up the difference.

Ironically in my dream only the bike course is changed. In reality the day before the event the forest fires forced them to change the swim to two loops and the run to three laps of the downtown (similar to what I dreamed the bike course would be), but left the bike course alone.

Before my first tri in August I had a few dreams - I was late in pretty much all of them. Before my 10K Dec. 3, I had a dream that I was late and then dreamed that there were only about 20 people running the 10K, I was last and the course wasn't marked. And the weird thing about all my late dreams is that my mom is in them. We're chronic late people (I'm trying to break the habit), and we discuss my growing tri obsession a lot. But, encouragingly, she's been really supportive as of late.

I also had several work stress dreams when I first started my last newspaper job. I had to lay out the paper on a 2 inch by 10 inch screen because the boss wanted to use my awesomely big monitor to watch TV on.

I've had a recurring dream where I'm in college and I "forget" to go to a class for an entire semester, only to realize it the night before the final exam.

I've never had a triathlon stress dream per se, but I did toss & turn the nights prior to my first few races.  The worst was the night before my second OW swim, after I had done so poorly during my first OW swim in the Gulf.

I have stress dreams all the time; they've actually turned out to be strangely useful for me. I'll explain:

Generally I have nightmares about the worst case scenario of whatever is going to be going on the next day (a side effect of the fact that whatever is going on the next day might be what I'm thinking about right before I go to sleep). So if there's something important and stressful the next day, I 'll be thinking of it before I go to sleep, and proceed to have a horrible nightmare about the worst imagingable outcome. But if there's no major stress, I'll go to sleep thinking about nice pleasant fuzzy bunnies or something.

And in the stress nightmare, there is no logic. So I'll have a nightmare about a race, but it won't be forgetting my race number, it'll be, "what if the zombies come out of the graveyard while I'm running and kill everyone?"

Last night, I was talking to people about a particularly stressful financial transaction. When I went to sleep, I dreamed that this transaction had resulted in a lawsuit, and that it had actually risen to the Supreme Court, and every newspaper in the country was running page 1 stories about what a bad person and horrible financial risk I was.

The downside to this is that I occasionally have bad nightmares. The upside to this is that nothing, and I mean nothing, in my life has ever been as bad as I might have feared. I'm always pleasantly surprised by most situations, because I've already dreamed of the worst imaginable outcome.

I rarely ever dream. But, the few stress dreams I can remember were work related, getting shot or shot at or some other cop scenario. I haven't had a dream like that in ages.

If I recall a dream, this is it 95% of the time. When I was a kid. As an adult. Always the same. God I hate that dream...

Usually every morning I'll wake up and remember them.  If not all of it, I'll remember bits and pieces.  There's been a few times when I don't remember them at all.  But like i said, that hardly happens.
