got hit on my ride today, was maybe 20 min into what should have been an easy 2 hour spin, was on a striaght road, very little traffic, wide shoulder, and was tooling along in the 22-23ish range, car comes up behind me, i move over a bit (now in the middle of teh shoulder), as he goes around me starts to cut back over and comes into the bike lane, rear bumber clips my front wheel, and i slam down hard on my left side. landed flat on my side, hip, hand, shin, knee, shoulder and side are all torn up, hip is swelling some. i sat up, guy was no where in sight. dude just took off..........

finally someone else came along and stopped, and gave me a ride back to my car (thank you whomever you were!!!!!!!)

by this point i was calm enough to check out the bike, both wheels out of true, brakes banged up, bars twisted to the side. i headed over to boulder cycle sport where dwain (sp?) took care of the bike.

clothes are in much worse shape. completely trashed my jersey, shorts, tights, arm warmer, helmet and left glove. so now i get to try and find a way to replace all this stuff...... YAY.

called non-emergancy police when i got home, gave them the info i had, but they said not much they could do with that, took my info all the same.

should be good to go here pretty soon, but going to have a lot of raod rash for a while, and a lot less cycling gear!

make sure you guys are wearing your helmets!!!!!

That really sucks!  Especially because it sounds like the A-hole did it on purpose.

Glad you seem to be ok, but it would be great if they caught the jerk, fined him heavily, made him pay all your expenses, and took his license until about 2090!  Yell

So sorry to hear that David.  I'm glad you're OK.

x2 on the helmet.  I got clipped by a (probably drunk) hit-and-run driver on my commuter several months ago.  Would have been a lot worse than road rash without the helmet.

Wow, glad to hear you are mostly okay.  That really sucks.  Unfortunately there are some real d-bags out there, and it's a random thing when you cross paths with one.  It's the kind of thing that makes me think about installing forward and rear facing video cams on the bike or helmet.  Hope you heal up quick.  Road rash sux.  Ice the hip.  It will probably stay swollen for quite a while.

Since we're in the same area what road were you riding?  Glad it wasn't worse but darn that sucks!  You might check to see if you can get a crash replacement on your helmet to help the costs there.

ACK!!! That's my route to work from my new place.  And a very, very popular road to ride on.  So disheartening to hear.  I think there's more backlash from the new law than was expected and drivers are really taking out their frustrations on cyclists.  Do you remember any details about the car?  PM me if you prefer not to post here but I'd be happy to keep my eyes out and would like to know for my own safety.

i've rode through there on about 2/3 of my rides since i have been here, never had a single issue, even with a lot of traffic,

today that was the only car around at the time,

all i saw/remmeber seeing was it was grey, smallish.
not wildly helpful.

Heck, that could describe my car! Oh well, it was worth a shot.  I hope your body and wallet are able to recover quickly.

That really bites.  I was sweeping a group ride last week & had a driver do a similar thing.  Some "chick" in red convertible deliberately swerved over into our lane & would have hit rider in front of me had I not yelled to come in (move right) just before the car swerved.  Chick driver was convertible & she looked right at us before swerving.
IMHO- This is ASSAULT with a deadly weapon.  A 1 1/2 ton full metal jacket.

These incidents are why states need to pass 3-foot laws (mandatory 3-foot clearance to pass cyclist).  Ya, some cars will still ignore laws but at least it will reinforce cyclists' traffic rights & increase awareness.
