I am debating between getting a stick or an automatic. I have driven both and like both. Curious to see what the BT community drives, for some reason I have a hunch there is a greater percentage of us that drive stick over automatic the you would find elsewhere (just have a gut feeling). Now what type of car I want to get is another story. Right now I'm thinking of a Subaru Outback, or a Rav 4. |

![]() I drove about 35 miles one way to work every day. Rather often, traffic was horrendous. After one day when it was worse than normal and it took me about 4 hours to get home I swore I would never own another standard transmission. Every car since then has been an automatic. |

My main truck doesn't have it, farm truck does. If I had to choose, no stick. Especially with kids, you end up using that free hand for other stuff. |

I live in the city and the thought of shifting every 50 feet in traffic didn't appeal much. So I went with the automatic and it does have a sport mode where I can flick the shifter to the left and shift manually. But no, I would not go stick again. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() Stick is fun but I would probably go with the auto. My Acura has electronic shifting so I technically have the ability to go full auto or change gears when I want (semi auto)? Interesting feature, but I rarely use it. I figured it would be nice if I need to drop a gear to pass, but there is so much power and the auto is smart enough to do it on it's own, I don't need to. |

IMO - this why you should get standard. Yes I know you can still 'shift' in an automatic, but I feel that I have more control with a standard in challenging conditions. Plus I just feel I have more control over the car in general - automatic's sometimes rev too high when they down shift, or do it at (IMO) the wrong time. All of our vehicles are standards - forester, tacoma and my wrangler, we do a lot of driving and I dont see us getting an automatic anytime soon. |

I've tried and I basically cannot put that car into a slide or spin on snow. Real ice, nothing's going to help but snow's no problem It's a shiftable auto so you can have best of both worlds. |

We have three cars, my two are stick, my wife's is auto. Mine is a full size diesel truck, I hate towing anything with an auto, it never does what I want it to do when I want it to. So the stick in my truck is awesome for me. I drive 12 miles each way for work, but mostly country roads, no sitting in traffic. My wife has the 25 mile one way commute with traffic. If I had her drive I would not drive my truck, it'd suck with all the stop and go. Also if we lived in a more urban area I would prob want auto. Boise is big but not crazy busy like Seattle. I drove stick in Seattle for a bit and it got to be a pain in the rear. So, if your commute allows it and you can find one I'd go stick. IME the tranny will last longer and I prefer to be able to get the tranny to do what I want when I want, no playing footsy with the pedal to make it work. I guess I have control issues. |

My wife's car and our SUV are automatics and that's OK because she prefers to have a cup of coffee in her hand while I prefer to rip through the gears. |

Otherwise, I voted stick shift only because I refuse to buy an automatic ... I love driving a stick shift. And I like pushing in the clutch with my foot, so the hand paddles won't do. But I also won't drive an SUV-type of car either. If I did, I would probably get an automatic. |

When I test drove my Outback on some dirt track - I was pushing through the gears, the salesman asked, nervously, "ah - so what is it that you do for a living?" "I'm a geologist". He visibly relaxes and says, "We'll, in THAT case, lets have some FUN!" . However, after teaching someone to drive on my Subie, I believe that standards are best for one -driver cars. . Having said that, believe that if you teach someone to drive, you should teach them to drive a standard. that avoids having to teach them twice and saves the embarrassment of having to say "I can't drive stick". . Everywhere I said "believe", it is just That. Anyone wanting to challenge me with facts and stats, I got nothing. Just my "feeling" for it. . |

It's not like you are the only one... but out here, sticks tend to break stuff. People get too heavy with the skinny pedal and dump the clutch. After that, they burn up a starter because they stall out about 20 times on each obstacle. The only way to do it right is to get a hand throttle on the stick. I have an auto and don't miss sticks at all. They are indeed more fun. So when you want to have fun, that's nice... but the other 95% of your time, it's just boring rowing gears. Of course, you can keep it in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd and do all the engine braking you want and crawling down stuff. Works fine for most stuff. But I will admit, gear selection is much better in the standard and you can put it where you want it. My friend has a stick, and we have the same Jeep. So I have wheeled his too. I do like manuals, but only about 5% of the time. I do wish mine was an unlimited though. |
