Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:45AM and ate a PB and Honey sandwich while getting dressed and ready to head out of the hotel. At check in on Saturday the volunteers told me to get there early because there's a 1 lane road getting into the park so if I was late it could be a disaster. With that in mind, I was on the road by 4:15 and ate a banana and drank some Nuun on the way over. I got there in great time and got a great parking spot for the steep hill walk down to transition.
Event warmup:

My wave wasn't going off until 6:50 so I took my time getting ready and went for a short swim before the announcements started around 6AM. Overall I was feeling good and excited to get going. I hit the porta potty before the wetsuit went on and tried to stay loose while watching the other waves go off.
Swim
  • 31m 29s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

I decided to not go out as hard as I knew I had a long day ahead of me and I didn't want to wear myself out early. The lake was warm, calm and I got in a good rhythm early which carried through the entire swim. No leaking goggles and no sighting issues made for a great swim and I couldn't believe I was making my last turn by the time I hit the last yellow buoy. I wasn't tired and I was feeling great.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Great swim for me.
Transition 1
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

I used a wetsuit stripper and got in line to get to my bike. There was 1 narrow carpet which people were walking on to get to their bikes and passing was not easy. Come on people, we're racing here! I sat on my booty, put my socks and bike shoes on, followed by my helmet and shades and I was on my way.

Comments:

This bike course was tough! There's a very steep hill right out of transition followed by more hills and very few coasting miles. I got a cramp in my left hip around mile 30 which was painful to pedal through but overall I just need to spend more time on the bike. There were periods where I felt great and other times I couldn't wait to get off. I drank 1 bottle of Hammer Perpetum, had 1 pack of Jelly Belly's and 2 gels. I also took water at every aid station. It was starting to get hot and I knew I needed a lot of fluids to put together a decent run.
What would you do differently?:

I need to spend more time on the bike. I'm not sure I did anything wrong, I was just lacking the stamina to put together a stronger ride.
Transition 2
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Helmet and shoes off and hat and running shoes on. Nothing exciting to report here except that my rear end, back and neck were happy to be off the bike.
Run
  • 2h 04m 29s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

This run kicked my a*s. I was hoping to run between 8 and 8:30/min but after making it to the top of the 1st big hill, my legs had called it a day. This was a painfully slow and long run for me. After mile 5 I was taking water, gatorade and basically whatever the aid stations were offering and couldn't wait to get to the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

I was very disappointed with my run given I'd been running closer to 7:30/mile in my training. This was my 2nd HIM and this run was much slower than my 1st. I'm not sure if it was the heat, the hills or just lack of training but I know I can do better and will prove on my next race :).
Post race
Warm down:

Limped across the finish line and was immediately offered an IV. An IV!?! What has the world come to?? Maybe I'm old school but a banana, some watermelon and some water did the trick. I hung around for about 20 mins then hit the road. I was exhausted and couldn't wait to get back to Dallas for a hot bath and a cold beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Tough to say. I felt well trained but for my next race I'll focus on spending more time on my bike and doing some more bricks.

Event comments:

The volunteers were incredible. I can't say enough about how friendly and helpful everyone was. It was a long, hot day and everyone at every aid station was cheering, helpful and very friendly. This race is very tough though. Lots of climbing, hot and definitely the hardest tri I've ever done.

Sounds like you had a better race than you are willing to give yourself credit for!  You had a great swim, a strong bike (don't forget you had a lot of hills) and a good run AND were able to recover with a good old fashioned banana, watermelon and water!  But yes, by all means, strive to make your next race even better - after all, isn't that what we do this crazy sport for, to improve our own times and performances?  Congratulations!

It was a tough race and I don't think anyone hit the paces they thought they would on the run, I know I certainly didn't. Great job on a challenging course!

x2 on everything she said. take some time to let yourself off the hook and relish the fact that you've lined up for and finished 2 HIM's - that's no small potatoes!

Congrats!

Agree with everything said! Heat and humidity can be soul crushers, so it's no wonder you didn't hit the times you hoped for; but what you did do was still really good!
