Subject: Favorite Breakup Songs

Valentine's Day always brings out the cynical romantic (romantic cynic?) in me. Let someone else start a maudlin "Favorite Love Songs" thread if they would, or go check out All Songs Considered "Lesser Known Love Songs" podcast, as it's what sparked this one (more on that later). I want to know what you want to hear at the end of a relationship. Do you want to wallow in self pity? Taste the bitterest vitriol? Exact revenge on the ex? Please share, give examples.

Personally, I prefer the quiet finality exhibited in the last verse of The Free Movement's 1971 hit,  "I've Found Someone of My Own":

She said ' I've found somebody new
To take your place.'
'I said don't feel so all alone
I've found someone of my own.'

I got up from the table
Reached down and wiped the tears
From her face
I put out my cigarette
Turned and walked away

50 Ways to Leave Your Lover -

You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

G-n-R

I used to love her,
but i had to kill her
I used to love her,
but i had to kill her
I had to put her, six feet under
and I can still hear her complain
I used to love her, (whoa yeah)
but I had to kill her
I used to love her, (oooo yeah)
but I had to kill her
I knew I'd miss her,
So I had to keep her
She's buried right in my backyard
(whoa yeah)
(whoa yeah)
(whoo-oo yeah)

Whenever one of my relationships ended, I always found comfort and solace in the touching and insightful lyrics of the likes Trent Reznor or Alan Jorgenson of Ministry, as in this heartbreaking sonnet, "Stigmata":

just like a car crash
just like a knife
my favourite weapon
is the look in your eyes
you've run out of lies!

you've run out of lies!
you've run out of lies!
you've run out of lies!
you've run out of lies!
you've run out of lies!
you've run out of lies!
there's a ton locked in your empty eyes
get out of my life!

i'm chewing on glass
and eating my fingers
i'm not the one
who's run out of lies
lies!

you've run out of lies!
you've run out of lies!
you've run out of lies!
you've run out of lies!
you've run out of time!

cutting my face
and walking on splinters
i lost my soul
to the look in your eyes
your eyes!

you ran out of lies!
you ran out of lies!
you ran out of lies!
you ran out of time!

stigmata!

o, you have empty eyes!...
they tell me nothing, nothing but lies

Motley Crue - Don't Go Away Mad...Just Go Away

We could sail away
Or catch a freight train
Or a rocketship into outer space
Nothin' left to do
Too many things were said
To ever make it feel
Like yesterday did

Season's must change
Seperate paths/seperate ways
If we blame it on anything
Let's blame it on the rain

I knew it all along
I'd have to write this song
Too young to fall in love
Guess we knew it all along

(Chorus)
That's alright, that okay
We were walkin' through some youth
Smilin' through some pain
That's alright, that's okay
Let's turn the page

My friends called today
Down from L.A.
They were shooting pool all night
Sleeping half the day
They said I could crash
If I could find my own way
I told them you were leaving
On a bus to go away

That's alright, that's okay
We were two kids in love
Trying to find our way
That's alright, that's okay
Held our dreams in our hands
Let our minds run away

(Chorus)

And remember what I say girl
And it goes this way:

Girl, don't go away mad...
Girl, just go away!

If you're looking for the self-pity route, you've got to go with Pearl Jam's "Black"

Hey... oooh...
Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did.
All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn

Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands shake beneath the clouds
Of what was everything.
Oh, the pictures had all been washed in black, Tattooed everything...

I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can drop away

And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything?
All the pictures have all been washed in black, Tattooed everything...

All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be... yeah...
Uh huh... uh huh... ooh...

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine

Aah... uuh..

Too doo doo too, too doo doo [many times until fade]

Macy Gray-Strange Behavior

This is the story,
about two people
in love.

We were happily married,
Until he waved a gun at me.
I said whats with all your strange behavior.

He said I love you babay
But you got a big insurance policy
And I really
Need the paper.

(Chorus)

Strange behavior by the sea. (se-e-e)
He'd be here
But he's deceased
Strange behavior

[Macy]
I had a big insurance policy
And he had a big insurance policy,
Too!

I said baby if you get a job
You would not have to shoot me now.
He said Oh My God Your such a hata.
But then he chickened out,
I took the gun and shot him down
Cuz I really need the papa.

(chorus)

Strange behavior by the sea. (se-e-e)
He'd be here
But he's deceased
Strange behavior

[Macy]
What was I to do
Sometimes its me or you
I swear that I loved you baby
All I have to say so
I say so
cuz Im rich now

SHHHHHHHHH

Drove his body to the sea
Iissed him on his cold cheek
I said I guess I see you later

And the people all asking me
I say he'd be here but he deceased

Then I go and spend my papa-a
Oh oh oh

(chorus)

Strange behavior by the sea. (se-e-e)
He'd be here
But he's deceased
Strange behavior

He'd be here
He'd be here

he's dead!

The Replacements - Never Mind

A solution is out of the question

And it makes no sense to apologize

The words I thought I brought I left behind

So never mind

All over but the shouting, just a waste of time

Never mind

http://www.myspace.com/amberleighrocks

I Don't Need You

I need to take myself out, kick up a little dust

Let my belly ring show and hike my miniskirt up

I need a good stiff drink, probably two,

But I don't need you

One last cry and a soak in the tub

Whatever it takes to forget about us

I need a call from mama

Some comfort food

But I don't need you

What you're sellin' I ain't buyin'

Your excuses and your lyin'

Talk is cheap and that's all you do

But I don't need you

Well I could pay big bucks for therapy

Complain about you, cry about me

But she'd just tell me what I already knew

That I don't need you

Just for fun I could have me a fling

Marathon kisses that don't mean a thing

I need a tall distraction 'bout six foot two

But I don't need you

What you're sellin' I ain't buyin'

Your excuses and your lyin'

Talk is cheap and that's all you do

But I don't need you

I need to ppick my heart up, put it high on a shelf

Till I find the one I trust, keep it to myself

Meanwhile mama needs a new pair of shoes

But I don't need you

What you're sellin' I ain't buyin'

Your excuses and your lyin'

Talk is cheap and that's all you do

But I don't need you

-repeat-

Clearly "I Will Survive". Best ever. Or anything angry by Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Avril Lavigne, etc. Angry chick music is always good. (Okay, Kelly Clarkson isn't always angry, but she has some angry/sad songs).

Did I mention I hate Valentine's Day with a fervent passion?

"I Used To Love Her" by G 'n' R is about a dog that died.

The answer to the original question, though, is either "Bye Bye Love" or "Cathy's Clown" by the Everly Brothers.

nelly furtado - i will make you cry - was the first song i ever heard by her and still my fave

This is not political it's just that I demand attention when I walk into a
room
And it's not that I can't play ball hard it's just that I don't want to
And the more I think about this pressure love I don't want you
And I can't have you and that's what hurts the most
I cannot show you these things I boast
I'll throw my heart out, keep my head up, I cannot up cuz
I got what you need boy (baby I do) but I will only cause you pain, yeah (I promise that)
I got what you need boy (baby I do) but I will only bring on the rain
So I'll prefer to run this road rough around the edges Good for something but too good to give it to you You run your own course at your own pace but I just got impatient See, I wanted to explore Forsake you, forsook you, abate you, dissipate you So turn fate around, I believed that I was free of you (not)
I still believe in those days on benches at sunset or the waves in July-or
was it March
We weathered weathers and storms real and imagined, such fragile tenderness
You are truly blessed
I stress this as I blow you this kiss as I blow it in the wind, mmwa
I got what you need boy (baby I do) but I will only cause you pain, yeah (I promise that)
I got what you need boy (baby I do) but I will only bring on the rain

They say time is made of memories
Well I remembered and I'm tired
This is not political
It's just that I remember the fire
Babe you left me with my head held high and I feigned to be more than I was,
didn't I
I thought I could do without sugar love but this chocolate has turned into
sweet bubble gum
Candy is sweet but honey is sweeter
It tastes like the real thing but candy is much much cheaper (Cheaper)
I got what you need boy (baby I do) but I will only cause you pain, yeah (I promise that)
I got what you need boy (baby I do) but I will only bring on the rain

When you are melancholy;

Hang by Matchbox 20

She grabs her magazines
She packs her things and she goes
She leaves the pictures hanging on the wall, she burns all
Her notes and she knows, she's been here too few years
To feel this old

He smokes his cigarette, he stays outside til its gone
If anybody ever had a heart, he wouldnt be alone
He knows, she's been here too few years, to be gone

And we always say, it would be good to go away, someday
But if theres nothing there to make things change
If its the same for you I'll just hang

The trouble understand, is she got reasons he don't
Funny how he couldn't see it all, until she
Grabbed up her coat
And she goes, she's been here too few years to take it all in stride
Yeah well still its much too long, to let hurt go (you let her go)
And we always say, it would be good to go away, someday
But if theres nothing there to make things change
If its the same for you I'll just hang
The same for you
I'll always hang
Well I always say, it would be good to go
Away
But if things dont work out like we think
And there's nothing here to ease the ache
But if there's nothing there to make things change
If its the same for you I'll just hang

If you're tired of the games;

Emerson Hart (great album, BTW)

Maybe I'm the joker
Maybe I'm the fool in your eyes
Maybe I'm the weak one
Maybe I'm a lie in disguise
Maybe I'm angry
Cause I'm the one who's always wrong
Maybe I'm not the one who's so strong
But did ya think about it
Did ya pull it in and pull out
Could you live without me
Did you ever really have a doubt
But do you understand it baby
When you say it's over it's done
Maybe I'm not the one

So If you're gonna Leave
Ya you better get going
Cause I ain't wasting no more time
What ya did and what ya didn't
So if you're gonna leave
Ya you better start running
Cause I ain't wasting no more time
What it might have been

We can stand on reason
We can fight about all the things
This isn't forever
This is more than a wedding ring
But do you understand it baby
When you say it's over it's done
Maybe I'm not the one

So If you're gonna Leave
Ya you better get going
Cause I ain't wasting no more time
What I did and what I didn't
So if you're gonna leave
Ya you better start running
Cause I ain't wasting no more time

Whoa did it happen again
The things that you wanted
For being a friend
How did it happen again
Just look onward baby
Cause some day you might need a friend

So If you're gonna Leave
Ya you better get going
Cause I ain't wasting no more time
What We did and what we didn't
So if you're gonna leave
Ya you better start running
Cause I ain't wasting no more time
I ain't wasting no more time

Another Matchbox 20 tune of self-pity, but it's a good tune -

She got out of town
On a railway New York bound
Took all except my name
Another alien on Broadway
There's some things in this world
You just can't change
Somethings you can't see
Until it gets too late
Baby, baby, baby
When all your love is gone
Who will save me
From all I'm up against out in this world
Maybe, maybe, maybe
You'll find something
That's enough to keep you
But if the bright lights don't receive you
You should turn yourself around
And come on home
I got a hole in me now
yeah,I got a scar I can talk about
She keeps a picture of me
In her apartment in the city
Some things in this world
Man, they don't make sense
Some things you don't need
Until they leave you
And they're things that you miss
Baby, baby, baby
When all your love is gone
Who will save me
From all I'm up against out in this world
Maybe, maybe, maybe
You'll find something
That's enough to keep you
But if the bright lights don't receive you
You should turn yourself around
And come on home
Let that city take you in, come on home
Let that city spit you out, come on home
Let that city take you down, yeah
God's sake turn around
Baby, baby, baby
When all your love is gone
Who will save me
From all I'm up against in this world
Maybe, maybe, maybe
You'll find something
That's enough to keep you
But if the bright lights don't receive you
You should turn yourself around
And come on home
Come on home
Baby, baby, baby
Come on home
Yeah, come on home
Yeah, come on home

not a big fan of country but they have some great revenge songs so from Carrie Underwood

"Before He Cheats"

Right now he's probably slow dancing with a bleach blond tramp,
and she's probably getting frisky...
right now, he's probably buying her some fruity little drink cause she can't shoot whiskey...

Right now, he's probably up behind her with a pool-stick, showing her how to shoot a combo...

And he don't know...

That I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped up 4 wheel drive,
carved my name into his leather seats...
I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights,
slashed a hole in all 4 tires...

Maybe next time he'll think before he cheats.

Right now, she's probably up singing some
white-trash version of Shania karaoke..
Right now, she's probably saying "I'm drunk"
and he's a thinking that he's gonna get lucky,
Right now, he's probably dabbing on 3 dollars worth of that bathroom polo...
And he don't know...

That I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped up 4 wheel drive,
carved my name into his leather seats,
I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights,
slashed a hole in all 4 tires...

Maybe next time he'll think before he cheats.

I might've saved a little trouble for the next girl,
Cause the next time that he cheats...

Oh, you know it won't be on me!

No...not on me
'Cause I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped up 4 wheel drive,
carved my name into his leather seats...
I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights,
slashed a hole in all 4 tires...

Maybe next time he'll think before he cheats.

Oh.. Maybe next time he'll think before he cheats...

Ohh... before he cheats...

Here's a newer song that I like:  Irreplaceable by Beyonce (just the first verse)

Everything you own in the box to the left
In the closet that's my stuff, yes
If I bought it please don't touch

And keep talking that mess, that's fine
But could you walk and talk at the same time?
And it's my mine name that is on that tag
So remove your bags let me call you a cab

Standing in the front yard telling me
How I'm such a fool, talking about
How I'll never ever find a man like you
You got me twisted

You must not know 'bout me
You must not know 'bout me
I could have another you in a minute
Matter fact he'll be here in a minute, baby

You must not know 'bout me
You must not know 'bout me
I can have another you by tomorrow
So don't you ever for a second get to thinking you're irreplaceable

That's a good one. I also really like her newest one "Single Ladies" ("if you liked it, then you shoulda put a ring on it". It's kind of annoying, but super-catchy and definitely an angry song

Also agree with the Carrie Underwood song. A couple of "men who done me wrong" drive sweet-a$$ cars...so I like that one

Alison Krauss' "Forget About It".  I bolded my favorite parts.

Forget about it
I'm admittin' I was wrong
And I'll just take what's mine
And walk right out the door

Forget about it
I'll split and I'll be gone
And you'll have memories
You'll find hard to ignore

'Cause after all
I'll see you sometime maybe
When I can't recall
How you drove me crazy
Forget about it
When forever's over
I won't remember how much
I loved you anymore

Forget about it
Put me out of your head
Now that you're free and easy
Out there on the town
Forget about it
When you're lying in bed
Just wishing I was there to lay you down

'Cause after all
I'll see you sometime maybe
When you will recall
How I drove you crazier
Forget about those stars in your eyes
Laying by the fireside
Holding you tight
I can't remember when I felt so right
So just forget about it

Forget about it
When you see me on the street
Don't wink, don't wave
Don't try to tease me with your smile
Forget about it
If we chance to meet somewhere
Don't think it's 'cause I'm trying to reconcile

'Cause after all
I'll see you sometime maybe
When I can't recall how you drove me crazier
Forget about those stars in your eyes
Laying by the fireside
Holding you tight
I can't remember when I felt so right
So just forget about it

I like to pretend this is how my recent ex feels (but I doubt it's the case): She Wouldn't Be Gone by Blake Shelton

Red roadside wild flower if I'd only picked you
Took you home set you on the counter
Oh, at least a time or two
Maybe she'd thought it through.

Yellow sunset slowly dipping down in the rear view
Oh, how she'd love to sit and watch you
I could have done that a whole lot more
If I hadn't been so stubborn, been so selfish
Thought about her more, thought about me less
Joked and maked her laugh, held her when she cried
A little more that.. maybe I...

Wouldn't be driving like hell flying like crazy down the highway
Calling everyone we know stopping any place she might be
Going any place she might go beating on the dash
Screaming out her name at the windshield tears soaking up my face
If I had loved her this much all along, maybe maybe, yeaa maybe...
She wouldn't be gone.. she wouldn't be gone..

She warned me it was coming said if I didn't change
She was leaving
I just didn't believe she would ever really walk out,
God, I believe her now
Called her mamma, cried like a baby to her best friend
If they've seen her, they ain't sayin, they ain't sayin...
Now, I'm cursing like a fool, praying it ain't too late
All I wanna do is fix my mistakes.

Find her beg her for one more try, until then damn it I"ll..
Be driving like hell flying like crazy down the highway
Calling everyone we know stopping any place she might be
Going any place she might go beating on the dash
Screaming out her name at the windshield tears soaking up my face
If I had loved her this much all along, maybe maybe, yeaa maybe...
She wouldn't be gone..

I wouldn't be beating on the dash
Screaming out her name at the windshield tears soaking up my face
If I had loved her this much all along, maybe maybe, yeaa maybe...
She wouldn't be gone..

Red roadside wild flower if I'd only picked you
Took you home set you on the counter, oh at least a time or two
Maybe she'd thought it through...
