I'm looking at getting rid of the Jeep.  I love the thing and its killing me because right now is the time of year to get the hard top and the doors off and have my first drives of the year topless.  I'm dying to do that.  But the fuel costs on that thing are brutal.  I drive 40 miles each way to work each day.  I've had it for 22 months and I have 42,000 miles on it.  It's off warranty already.

I've looked into hybrids but the MPG savings don't offset the initial price for me.  I'm probably going to end up in a Honda Civic at 30/40 MPG.  I've very happy that the gas savings and payment drop will save me about $250 per month, but I will miss my Jeep.  Jen and the kids don't want me to do it either.  It's a cool/fun vehicle but $250 a month is a decent chunk of change.

So because this will probably be my last weekend with the Jeep, here's an ode in memoriam:

Jeep
You rocked.

Thank you.

My mini cooper is very gas friendly. As much as Civics say they are 30/40, you may not always get that. My mini gets 32/45 all the freaking time.

The major downside: very hard to fit the bike, two dogs, the husband, and the gear in it to go to a race. It can be done, it just isn't fun.

I have never understood how/why Jeep can't make the Wrangle more fuel efficient.  It isn't a machine of an SUV.  It is a simple vehicle.

The Civic can seat three kids in the back seat.  That's a big deal for me.

Gas costs and conservation were definitely a factor when I went shopping for vehicles this past year, but I couldn't imagine living a triathlon lifestyle out of a Civic. I do love the RAV4 I decided on, gets 25 city and nearly 30 highway in real, heavy-footed, USAT-legal, no-drafting driving. Bike and other triathlon necessities fit easily inside, also can carry two kids and mama bear to the tris as well.

I had a CRX I drove for 10 years and an Accord for 2 before I traded it in for my wife's minivan, so yeah, I'm a Honda fan too.

I get 30+ in my four-door Accord (mostly highway) 5-speed. Bonus: It's a 1996 with 205,101 miles on it. Tough car, and almost as tight as the day I bought it. Get a Honda, Save the World.

I hear you on the fuel cost but I just can't see myself folding into a small car.  I need/really like the room when I am driving.  I am actually looking at going the green diesel route.  I still have about a year on my lease but I think I am going to get a 4 door dodge diesel truck and slap one of these bad boys on it.

I traded my Wrangler in 3 years ago for a Honda Civic.  The 45 mile drive oneway was also hurting my pocket.  I miss my baby and want another one.  Now that  I'm back to a 15 minute drive it might be time to  go Jeep again.  How much are you asking for your baby.  Is it a 6 or a 4 and what model Wrangler?

2005 Wrangler Unlimiited (longer wheelbase).  V6.  6cd in dash, upgraded sound, both hard and soft tops.  Chrome grill in front.  Still in great shape just high miles.  All service maintaned at the dealer.

Before you ask, I have no idea what I want for it.  I plan on doing some research this weekend to see what I can get.  If I were you I'd check out the new 4 door Wranglers.  Those are sweet and the way they do the sectional hard top roof it is a lot easier to take on and off than mine.  Mine requires 3 guys to do safely.

Bear: Word.

I have a Civic and I love love love it -- mostly because it is paid for, and I just can't imagine picking up a car payment again, HOWEVER -- hauling my bike in and out of the back seat? Is getting old. And the soon to join the family Chippy-the-dog is NOT going to love being cramped up front. And if other people want to come along? No way. I am seriously daydreaming about the CRV or a Honda Passport for my next car.

All of this being said ... I fill up the tank once a week (if that), and it costs me about 20 bucks. That's pretty sweet.

surfwallace - 2007-05-18 10:10 AM What can be better than 30+ MPG, no car payment, and a car worth so little that the insurance is pennies?

Heh. See above. I'm with ya, buddy. No car payment, cheap insurance and cheap gas? I must be out of my mind to think about a new car. But someday I'll have to do it  ...

Getting the bike in the car really isn't that big of a priority for me.  At this point in my life I'll only be doing one or two tris per year and I don't do stand alone cycling events.  I never drive anywhere to ride.  I have prime riding area right from my house.  So I'm good there, a rack will take care of my needs.

If parking wasn't $300 a month in my 'hood I'd buy that sucker from you in a heartbeat. I LOVE Jeeps -- had an 81 CJ5 POS tree-killer when I was a younger man. That said my last two cars have been little rice rockets so I don't know if I could switch over to a slower vehicle.

My wife has a 2001 Honda CRV that she won't trade in for anything. Loves it. It's a great vehicle. Underpowered, but what isn't???

You're going about this the wrong way. Don't sell the Jeep, move closer to work. Then, ride your bike to work.

Also keep in mind that getting a new car now will most likely extend your car payments 2 years longer. Assuming you financed the entire Jeep, you'll be lucky if you're not upside down on it with that mileage and only 2 years.

Can'tya just get an electric lawn mower or something, and keep the jeep?  That thing is flucking Suhweeeeet.

That being said, I understand.  Just be ready, can you chant $250/month to yourself for the next umpteen years as you get into a car that small?

My 6'5" 300+ lb buddy LOVES his Mini Cooper. Tons of legroom and headroom in that little package. Just sayin'.

I thought the same exact thing! How is that possible? Did you add an extra zero?

If you're considering the civic or similar vehicle, have you looked at the Toyota Corolla? We rented a Corolla on vacation a couple years ago, and we got 38-40 MPG. If gas mileage were my sole consideration, the Corolla would be at the top of my list of non-hybrids.

Don't sell the jeep! Buy a beater-type commuter car!
