If the kid keeps misbehaving to the point where corporal punishment is needed, you are probably better off paddling the parents.

Just my 2 cents.

As a former misbehaiving elementary school student, I'd be all for the part of the rule that only allows paddling once per semester.......I'd get that sucker out of the way on day one!

Is that a joke? Only one time a semester. Give me a break. I would get mine over with day 1 also.

Good.

It happened to me ONCE in 1st grade, and I was a VERY well behaved student for every year after that.  It definitely had a positive and lasting impression with me.

Maybe they'll have to sit in the comfy chair and then get poked with the soft pillow?

Okay, this could be a problem that spirals out of control REAL fast.

I would have been more scared of the beating I would get when I got home. Paddling by a principal sounds like cake compared to the leather belt I woulda got at home!

Yeah, but look how you turn out...Exhibit #1 in the case against paddling

I grew up in schools that paddled...it was no joke...and it worked very well.

I was able to see the stark contrast to public schools when I attended one in 11th and 12th grades.

I don't have a dog kid in this fight, but some areas that concern me are who get's to decide when striking the kid is warranted?  What happens if someone gets carried away and starts hitting kids if they giggle in class or just be disruptive (like kids do)?

I'm not a parent, but I think I would rather you call me out of work and tell me to pick the kid up for the day and let ME do the corporal punishment.  I don't think I would take too kindly to someone else hitting my kid, no matter if they "deserved" it or not.  That's for me to do.

Totally agree.  It would be easy for me to say I'm for paddling because my kids get discipline at home and I don't expect them to be paddled at school - it wouldn't impact them, right?  However, if they needed it, I sure don't want some school administrator doing it.  I think you get a lot of pro-paddling responses from people with strong families and strong home discipline (notice the "that's nothing compared to what I would get at home" responses), because this is something that would happen to other people's kids.

I went to a public school as a kid where paddling was allowed (conservative rural area), and I'm a teacher now where it (and any kind of physical punishment) isn't, and honestly can't say I see much difference in behavior. Kids will be kids, and it's not usually necessary to use corporal punishment. If parents want to, I think that should be their call. I don't think it affected my behavior except to make me sneakier about getting into trouble! As others have said, worse consequences awaited at home--a call home would have had exactly the same effect. Just remember standing there refusing to cry--the principal was a big muscular dude, I was a skinny kid, and it hurt--actually got peer glory for not crying when most did (early lessons in HTFU??), so not sure how well it worked as a negative consequence!

Male Principal says to 5th grade female student, who happens to wear a dress that day.   Bend over.  I'm not sure this is a smart approach for our government to be taking.

Can anyone say Lawsuit? I told my husband when our son was young.. never lay a hand on him. If he reported corporal punishment at school.. and they decided to investigate? Pain in the .. far more than paddling...

X2 or what ever we are up to. My father rarely spanked, but you always knew it was a possibility.

Several years ago my wife and I were considering adopting 3 siblings. The youngest was 7 and was a handful. We met with his te4acher before school started and I told her that we knew he was a handful and that we supported her 100% and that if he needed discipline that he would also be disciplined at home.

She was absolutely aghast.

We had paddling all through school.  Sometimes I was asked by the principle if I would take paddling or in school suspension and I took paddling every time.  In school suspension or out right suspension gave a call to my parents and there would be some serious consequences when I got home but I think that is what many kids are missing today is that very real, healthy fear of punishment at home no matter the income level of the student or school.

It is not illegal to use corporal punishment on your child.  You cannot cause injury, that's the line with the law, as it should be.

No injury, no investigation......none.

It's a sad commentary on humans if striking a child is what we feel like we have to resort to for punishment.

Basically, "my patience has run out trying to be reasonable, so I will just hit you."

I just don't see a practical difference in anything.

In all of the schools that I have worked at - a small percentage of the kids make up the majority of the school discipline issues.

I doubt that a good paddling is going to change their behavior, many of these kids that I have dealt with have been spanked at home, suspended, cited, arrested, pepper-sprayed, medicated, beaten, parents cited, jailed, etc. if all that stuff did not work another paddling won't make a difference.

For the kids who occasionally screw-up, all of the non-corporal punishments have been enough to get them back on track.

So that doesn't make a difference.

The research and my work experience all agree on what really works.

Schools with a positive culture to engage kids, quality teachers that spend more time trying to engaging kids than talking about how they need a good paddling to fix them, rewarding the heck out of positive behaviors. Progressive discipline that also seeks to identify the kids with more serious needs early.

I am not against corporal punishment, and I have used it myself in the home.

However, any educator that has a pattern about talking about how kids needs more severe punishment, with exception to those venting on a bad day, but those that really think it is the solution to their classroom problems... have always been the crappiest ones that I have ever worked with...

 My prediction...

The law passes and gets implemented.

Great schools will still be great.

Crappy schools will still be crappy.

Someone stupid will do something stupid. Hopefully, a kid's life won't get messed up as a result.

I just don't see a real-world up side.

Maybe they should focus on things proven to make schools better?

Haha this is exactly what I did.  I could intercept a note in the mail but if i chose suspension mom would know and I would be grounded.

There has always been corporal punishment here in the shcools (rural south)

Here the parent gives permission or not for corporal punishment to be administered in school. There are cameras EVERYWHERE in school now so anything like that could be watched and reviewed and the administrators know that,

Consequently, when my boys (who inherited my nature) were in school I did give permission but said I wanted to be called and notified and then they got grounded too. Actually my boys were better than me & did not get in trouble as often as I did. I think partly because I was a little smarter than my mom about such things. live and learn.

Again, just sitting back thinking about this...

I was spanked as a kid.  Dad used a wooden spoon.  (mom tried, but didn't put enough heart into to it, so I would whip up some fake tears to make here feel successful).

So for the LONGEST time thought, meh, no big deal.  I turned out great.  So did my brothers and sisters.  A LOT of people say that.  However, you could argue you were good people and you remained good people DESPITE getting hit/spanked.

THEN,  several years ago, was talking to my mom and she felt horrible about it (even after I said it was no big deal and laughed about it).  She basically asked the same question that I ask now and sort of changed my views.  WHY is using violence/striking a child a "good" solution to solving discipline problems?  What does that teach?  If you are bad, you are going to be hurt?  That you are frustrating you parents enough by whining or throwing a tantrum so the solution is hitting them?

Trust me, I GET IT.  Some times kids are insufferable.  We get so mad, frustrated, confused on what to do...  Shoot, sometimes I would love to smack OTHER people's kids.  But it's still uncomfortably amazing (at least to me) that striking a kid (who in no way can defend themselves) is still considered a viable solution.

I never viewed spanking as a punishment, but a single swat on the butt is a very effective way to get the childs attention.
