Subject: Ridiculous / unusual street names

I'm not sure who licked the Colorado River toads before naming some street names in Tucson, but some names are just plain strange. Here are some that I've recently come across (and can remember):

  • Cowhead saddle - Is the saddle made from cow heads? Or is it a mountain saddle covered in cow heads?
  • Buffaloberry - I didn't know buffalo had berries. They don't sound tasty.
  • Giachery - This sounds like a skin disease.
  • Miracle Mile - Yep, lots of "no tel" motels on that street.
  • Timrod - Apparently Tim's rod is so famous they named a street after it.
  • Manlove - Honestly, how could they NOT know?

Some of the Spanish street names get out of hand. One by my old house was "Via De Las Palimeritas". I used to live on "Paseo Del Tornasol." I found out you could remove all vowels and the mail would still get there. Thankfully I now live on "Soldier Trail." The requirement for buying a new house was that the streetname get simple and shorter.

Curious to hear what some of the crazy street names are in your area.

In my town we have "Skunk's Misery Road" and I have no idea how it came to be named thusly.

Many of the names around here are Spanish in origin. I grew up on a street called "Purissima," which wouldn't be very amusing except that it intersects "Concepcion."

We also have roads that sound like they're straight out of a western: "Whiskey Hill," "Trout Gulch," etc.

Eric used to live on Alameda de las Pulgas.  For those of you whose Spanish is a bit rusty... that means Avenue of the Fleas.  Nice.

Yes! I knew there was a great one around here that I'd forgotten.

Yeah... in San Francisco, the beach at the western edge, by the Pacific Ocean, is called... "Ocean Beach."  Yeah, that there's some creative naming there, folks.

Okay, while not your typical names. over here (in Iraq) the military gives names to all the roads we use...there is one called "Yo Mama" road...yes, it's true.  Our commander has to give a brief to the general, and we had a unit that was attacked (minor, nothing bad at all) on that road and so the colonel had to brief the general (it's over a VOIP system) about an incident on "Yo Mama" road...he didn't believe us at first when gave him the script, hahaha, it was GREAT!

We've got one of those too!  Another of my favorites is "Dorkus Bay Road".

Around the corner from me is "Fairweather road", most of it is clay so if it has rained in the last week it's impassable to all but the 4x4's that want to try their luck.

As far as obvious-type DUH! street names go I've got one.  The steepest hill around here is in Bull Valley called.......can you guess it........Valley Hill Rd.  See, there's this valley, and a hill.  And when you put a valley next to a hill you get......never mind.

Rohlwing Rd.  I've heard a million people say this street name and there are almost as many ways to say it.

I used to live on Princess Lane.  Very emasculating, to have to admit that you live on Princess Lane.

One year, some pranksters painted over the "nce" on the sign with green paint.

I work on Wacker Drive. They're filming the new Batman movie on Lower Wacker.

In Omaha there's `Dorcas Street' ... probably where Kiley lives.

There is a street up the way from me, and it is named "Flicker" Drive, but it is printed in all caps so it looks like FLICKER drive. Some kid bridged the gap between the L and the I with a sharpie...

In Lexington, KY there is a Pink Pigeon Parkway. A very nice use of alliteration even if the road runs through a horrible eyesore of suburban sprawl and stripmall plazas.

On the IM Louisville course one of the side roads out in the country was Penny Lane. Probably not uncommon, but a Beatles reference has to be mentioned.

We used to live on Quilting Lane.  My husband was SOOO embarassed to have to give out our address.  Now we live on Loch Tanna Loop...from effeminate to just plain weird.
