Not quite sure how to deal with this...

If he were my son, I wouldn't let him use the bathroom without asking BT first. You know, for starters.

Hmmm. His little sister is going through a phase of being afraid of the "Toilet Girl" (a picture that hangs in the bathroom). She won't go unless you go in there with her and protect her from the Toilet Girl.

Have you thought about taking the picture down? Just sayin'...

Ok, real answer coming.

My mother was told the same thing when I was about that age.  I was put into gifted classes that were in place of a few of my regular classes.  I decided that I didn't like it, and my parents allowed me to stop going and didn't push anything.  I did well in school and eventually decided to pursue those classes on my own when I hit high school.  Not sure if that's the way it would work out for anybody else, but that's my experience.

But just think about how smart I COULD have been.

A couple of things. First, congrats. Second, I'm left handed too so he'll probably be very smart like me but hopefully a better triathlete . Third, it's just an opinion at this point and not necessarly a fact. Parental observation is not really a good nor objective indicator and the teachers is not really indicative either. I'm not knocking your kid but I'm just saying at first grade, it's hard to say. And lastly, if it's true that he is "gifted," make sure you nuture it. Did you ever watch "searching for bobby fisher?" Not to that extreme but I think you'll get my point.

My daughter just tested for the Gt (Gifted Talented) program - no results yet. She got in the class by chance this year and LOVES the pace, intensity and level of information thrown at her every day. I want her to soo much be in the class every year for 2 reasons:

1) she is very bright and loves to learn and it's a good setting for her

2) a girl scout friend of hers (Lauren) has a hispanic last name like us and was placed in the ELS class despite not even speaking/understanding spanish. She is miserable - I'd even say close to being clinically depressed - no girls/boys talk to her because well a) she doesn't speak spanish and 2) she is far and above her classmates level wise. When the teacher does even basic 1st grade stuff, poor Lauren has to sit in the hallway because she knows it all and is given a book to read in further detail. And the administrative staff will not do anything - 2 months of meetings from week 1 and the parents gave up and now "home school" her after school to ensure she is challenged but also progresses and is truely ready for 2nd grade.

i do not want that to happen to Alyssa. All it takes is 1 bad year at this age for a child to loose interest in school and learning. I feel confident that our son Thomas in K this year won't be in ESL situation due having an IEP for speech language issues, but I'll remain diligent in fighting for a proper class setting for him...

have him tested - it won't hurt anything and if he tests into the program, he'll be receiving a higher standard of education.

Good luck - make sure he eats/sleeps well for the tests - Alyssa's test was for 3 days 1.5 hours each day and she was drained afterwards.

r u serious? isn't that illegal? I mean, it's clear the class is wrong for her and they made a giant assumption based on her surname. am I reading what you wrote right? she's in a class for english as a second language learners where the main language is spanish and they're teaching them english throughout the year....and yet, she doesn't speak spanisH?????

that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. the admin HAS TO DO SOMETHING.

sorry, i'm just flabbergasted right now. i hope i read that wrong b/c that's absolutely criminal.

I am on the fence on this. My sister is incredibly smart, gifted all the way, attended a special program in high school where she received her entire Freshman year college credits early... she loved it. It worked out really well for her.

I was in advanced classes beginning in middle school (they didn't have them in elementary school when I was a kid). But when I got to high school, something strange happened. I began to struggle in the math and science subjects. By the time I was a Senior, I was in advanced placement Calculus and failing. I couldn't have gone back, because I had already taken all of the classes the 'normal' kids my age were supposed to be in - there was nothing else to take, and I was REQUIRED to take a math course. So I struggled immensley to pass the class with a "C," and it almost ruined my senior year.

I hated knowing that if I would have just stayed in "normal" classes, I would have had a 4.0, but since I was put in advanced classes, my GPA dropped to just above 3.0. So much for that academic scholarship.

Sorry, but yes, you read that right although only 1/4 of the class is taught is spanish and the little girl in question doesn't speak any spanish. the parents were told that under some state/federal law the school has to integrate spanish and english speakers together - and in this setting this girl is so far ahead of her classmates she has to self teach in the hallway... it's very sad and I sooooo don't want this to ever happen to my children.

but, but, but, but...[shakes head]
but, that's crazy.
I mean, she doesn't *speak* spanish.
and they placed her in that class based on her *surname*?
I mean, isn't that kinda sorta like, racial profiling???? Is it? I don't know, but just b/c my last name is an italian surname, doesn't mean I make good pasta, throw a mean pizza, speak italian and belong in the "family"
am I wrong on this?

I mean, that's *fine* if federal law says they have to integrate spanish/english students together, but, how do they determine who should go in what class? sounds like they just looked at last names and made huge assumptions.

am i totally off base here? [still shaking head]

I think it's great.  I was in a gifted program when i was in elementary school.  It wasn't a full day thing - they just took some of us out of class a few times a week to work with a different teacher.  I loved it!  We got to do more in depth projects than in regular class.  I'll never forget the geneology project we got to do in third grade - they took us into Boston to meet a real geneologist and everything.  In middle school I switched to a private school and decided I wanted to try to be in with the cool kids - there went my grades.  Oh well - I had fun!  Anyway, the point is - let him try it - he might not be in it forever but it certainly can't hurt now.

My oldest daughter is in the gifted kindergarten right now.  In  this school district the gifted classes are seperate form the regular classes.  It's working out great so far - she loves it there.  They're doing more challenging work then my friends kids at the "best" local private school.  Tonight for homework she has to write sentences using her spelling words and read me a chapter from a biography about Louis Braille!
