http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/hawks/stories/2008/07/23/childress_hawks_greece.html

Summary:  Josh Childress (2004 6th pick) didn't resign with the Hawks or any NBA team.  Instead, he signed with a Greek team.  He is the second player recently (top rated HS player) to sign with a European team.

While neither player is a Lebron/Kobe caliber player, I wonder what it says about the globalization of the sport.  What if more HS Seniors or college players go this route, does the NBA make any substantive changes to keep talent at home?  Is it only time before Italy, Greece, etc makes a David Beckham type of deal to bring a star to Europe?  Will Europe emerge as a true minor/developmental league for the NBA?

I don't think this deal is indicative of Europe becoming a minor league for the NBA... if Childress had been a marginal player, or something struggling to make a team, yes, but he is a solid player.

It's going to jack up salaries.  Especially since the Hawks have no recourse here... the only thing they can do to prevent this kind of thing is pay more money.

I think the primary driver of this is the value of the dollar. Foreign salaries are much higher than they were just a year or two ago compared to a NBA salary because of exchange rates. If you factor in playing time and length of season, I could see it happen more often.

And yes, more high schoolers will consider going overseas for a year or two at least instead of going to college. As far as I am concerned, there is nothing wrong with that. These kids can learn quite a bit going to a new culture, probably more than some of the joke classes the athletic factories in the NCAA set up.

It's totally conceivable that Childress is far from the last native American player who'll be headed to Europe, etc. so long as the Euro is so much stronger. I also think it's likely they'll be coming back after one season of those leagues..Still not the same as the NBA in terms of talent or glamor. Still, a solid role-player cashing in on the weakness in the dollar..He won't be the only one.

You also have to think about the talent level. If he stays in the NBA he's a solid player but nothing special. If he goes to Europe he can be the big fish in the little pond while also making more money.

You mean the NBA is finally going to throw away it's thug image and begin enforce standards of conduct both on and off the court. aaaaand adopt a drug testing procedures that levy bans on players and penalize owners for failing to follow guidelines..... oooops I guess not, wrong thread.

Maybe sooner than you think...
