I did my first tri last weekend, the Trek Women's Tri.  I did well, placed in the top 3rd.  The course was flatter than a pancake.  Anyways - I am getting ready to register for the second tri and just a little nervous about completing with "real" athletes.  Not that people that complete in the Trek aren't "real"...but maybe a little less intimidating to me.

Did anyone here start with the Danksin and then move on to competing, and doing well in co-ed triathlons?  Any words of inspiration?

I'll be honest - women only events are much easier, as far as final standings go.  My first event was an Iron Girl duathlon and I thought I was pretty rockstar.   My next du was a normal co-ed event and I was put in my place, literally.  The women's only events attract a lot of newbies, so it's not so much that women are slower but more women who race at the events tend to be new to the sport.  Sorry if this is discouraging, but it's a necessary reality check so you don't beat yourself up too much later.  I didn't look at your results, but as an example a 28 min 5k at a women's sprint tri would probably put you up above the 50% line, but closer to 75% (bottom of pack) in a co-ed race.

However, other than that, racing co-ed is lots of fun!  Any event where people are taking it very seriously is 1) entertaining to see the attitudes, equipment, and 2) people are better are staying out of your way, making a more pleasant racing experience overall.  The presence of men has, in no way, diminished the fun of these events.  Not to mention the better eye candy...

You will be further down in the overall standings but most events are still open, warm and friendly. And you may still end up with good standing your AG it's just in the overall results ... I wondered about this when I recently did a half marathon that was women only and I finished in the top 70 of all the finishers! woo! So, i looked at my other results this year and I compared a fairly large 10k (about 1000 participants) and a 30k run (5000 participants) where I was still in the top 3rd of all female finishers so it isn't really an anomaly - it's just who you want to compare yourself with!

Go compare your times to last year's race and see where you might land. And don't worry about it at all! Go have fun!

I was in the lower top 1/3 at Danskin too last summer (my first tri).... and a month later I did the Chicago-Tri (co-ed and HUGE) as far as comparison in ranks... BOP swim, Lower top 1/3 of Bike, BOP run. Basically I sucked everything but the bike... Oh but it was an Oly versus the sprint Danskin.

I enjoyed both races didn't really care about the ranks just happy to be there and fit enough to race.

Heh...you're already a real triathlete (congratulations too).  I made the mistake of assuming that there wouldn't be any real triathletes at a local sprint.  I show up on race morning and WOW, there were real triathletes there and they had their top-shelf gear.  But then I found out they were friendly and here I am, 4 years later.

My first race was a women's only super sprint.  The support, encouragement and comradre were overwhelming, I LOVED every minute of it and was actually sad that it was over.  It totally got me hooked.

My second tri was a standard co-ed sprint and it's very possible that if this was my first it may have also been my last.  I was very underwhelmed by the support of both volunteers and racers.  I encourage just about every athlete I meet on the course (as they pass me) and got very little in return on the co-ed race.  It was disappointing and I couldn't wait for it to be over.

My next race is also a standard sprint for the most part and co-ed, however, I will have many friends at this race so I am really looking forward to it.

I place about the same in either but 4/12 AG in a co-ed tri sure looks a lot better than 40/120 or 334/998 in a women only race!

I prefer the smaller coed races.

Hey there- Im interested to see what people are saying bc this is my question too. Have done 4 womens events and am considering co-ed next....not sure if youre from Chicago suburbs but I have heard the HRMS Naperville triathlon is a good one to start with co-ed (its half the distance of the Trek swim!). I have done the womens naperville one which is done on the same course as the HRMS and its a nice flat course comparable to the Pleasant Pr/Trek event..... The other co-ed one on my radar for next year is the Batavia Triathlon.... not all that big, but pulling up results from this years event can help you gauge where you might fall as a finisher and might be a good starting point! I'LL do it if YOU do it
