Ok, I didn't run a Half Marathon on Saturday, but I did run a 20k (12.4 miles).  The problem I ran into was at about Mile 10 or so, it was like my legs didn't want to move.  I've been trying to figure out what happened.  Was I starting to dehydrate?  Did I bonk?  Did the heat of the day got to me since we lost our cooling breeze?

My pre-race routine was pretty much the same for all my races, I ate two packets of oatmeal when I got up, drank about 16oz of Sports Drink and drove to the race.  The temp was low 60's at the start and I was drinking about half a cup of water at each stop, which happened to be about every mile.  I started drinking a full cup at about mile 6 and dumping 1 to cool off a bit.  At about Mile 9 is when it seemed to get real hot, I would guess the temp was only in the low 70's by then, but we started running with the breeze.  Not much of a cooling effect when running with the breeze.  According to my Garmin I burned just shy of 2000 calories, now of course we all think these things over estimate a bit, though it is a bit higher than any training runs, which of course it should be as I was running at a faster pace.

Ok, here are the facts, my training logs and race report are posted:

as is the course (two big hills but rest fairly flat to small rollers)

Ok, so here's my question:

Would you chalk this up to over heating and too little water intake or would you think that you need to add some Gells or other nutrition for a Half Marathon?  The Half Marathon is on Sept. 13, the weather could be cool, it could be hot, won't really know until we get closer to race day.

My thought was, and I figured I would practice this a bit, to increase my water intake at the start, perhaps a full cup.  Generally on training runs I'll drink about 16oz of water in an hour and a half.  I could drink more but it's hard to carry much more than that.  I was also thinking about doing a gel about 10-15 minutes before the start and then about 30-40 minutes in and at about 60-70 minutes in.  Sport Beans would work as well, though I think they are a bit more difficult to consume while running.

Ok, I'm looking for any other advise or perhaps a just, you're on the right track to make sure I'm not forgetting something.

uh sounds like you raced a half marathon to me and your legs died in the end. Really for 1 hour 40 if you drank a few cups of water I'd rule out dehydration since you hydrated well before the race. 60-70degrees isn't bad enough to really overheat. Honestly I just think your legs faded from going out a bit too fast over the first 8 miles of the race. It's not a easy distance to pace spot on.

Unless you starved yourself in the days leading to the run I do not believe it was a nutrition issue. It sounds like you hydrated pretty well during the run, so at 70 deg a below it should not have been that. YOur body stores ample glycogen to fuel you sufficiently for 2 hours without having to replenish calories.
I looked really briefly at your logs and the pace you ran was about the same or quicker than most of your running especially your longer runs, but you obv went a fair bit further. Maybe you were just having a bad day and that coupled with your longest run at a pace that is quicker than what you have been doing might have cooked you a little. Like I said I looked very quickly at your logs, but maybe try slowing it down a little. You have put in some good consistant running, but you have not done much volume. You have built your 1 long per week nicely but your volume between long runs is pretty low , so going as long as you did as fast as you did, maybe it was a little too much.

Good Luck.

Eh... any run I'm doing that is over 6-7 miles, I will take a gel every 30-45 minutes.

That's just me.

For me (your results may vary of course), I really need a gel around mile 8-9 to push me to the end of a half marathon. How many hours had passed since your breakfast? A lot of time in big races, it's many hours and you're due for some calorie replacement, if not an entire meal.

Have you experiemented with eating a gel during a long run? Might not hurt to try.

You did a long road race and got tired.  It's fatigue, not a nutritional issue.

I think you need to ingest probably at lest 1 gel over that period of time. Typically I take one before the event starts and then every 45 min or so into it.

+1. You have plenty of calories stored + breakfest. You just faded, it happens tough distance to get the distance + pacing right.

I don't take anything but water during a 1/2 mary. Maybe sports drink ever few miles to change this up...
