I'm up here in Penticton after driving up last night from a meeting in Portland.  Gloomy and windy here on Oct. 30.  Will check out the course today and tomorrow before heading back home.  Here's a pic of the lake swim start area directly across the street from my hotel.

I visited Penticton during Halloween 2009 weekend to check out the course.  Tons of photos in this album   http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?albumid=13397

Yep, it'll be my first Ironman as well. Is everyone from around B.C. or are you travelling there for the race?

I'm from Quebec, but plan on spending my summer in B.C.!

Not in for IMC 2010 but I literally live right on the bike course in Oliver. If you're interested in photos of the area, have a look here.

Also if you have any questions about the area or course, I'll try and help. What I am not good at is suggesting places to stay in Penticton as I have never needed to use any accommodations there.

My first post here. I will be doing IMC 2010, been away from triathlon for quite a while. A friend and former training partner did IM Louisville this year, got me thinking about getting back into the sport. Just happened on a thread at Slowtwitch talking about online registration being open for IMC the day after the race, called my friend and we both signed up that night.
Since then (Sept 1) have lost 35 lbs, bought a new bike (Planet X Stealth), and started training again. Have a long way to go, but the challenge of IMC is driving me to get back in shaping and I am having a lot of fun. I look forward to sharing my training with those of you here.

This will be my first Ironman as well. It's been quite a fun journey. As a super-clyde it's been quite a challenge training and I'm still 8 months out.  I'm 12 weeks away from the HIM in California and can already do all the distances on a regular basis so I'm excited to see how it goes putting it all together. I drove the Ironman Canada course last year and there are a couple of tough climbs but the nice part is that once you get over Yellow Lake ascent you get quite a bit of downhill to rest before the run. Also, the support of the people in town was absolutely amazing to see.  Can't wait to race with all of you.

What are the chances of getting a slot for 2011 race if you don't go to the 2010 race for onsite registration?  Thanks!

Hi, I was wondering how you got a slot for Ironman Canada since I am looking at this for my first Ironman next year?  What are the chances of getting a slot for 2011 race if you don't go to the 2010 race for onsite registration?

Thanks,
Matt

Mdfahy: I volunteered last year so it was about a 10 person line to get into this year's ironman but for the people in the general line up it was quite far and I don't think any spots are made available online. However, if you're willing to pay there are usually some spots available for charity but it's quite a bit more than the regular registration price.

It did go on line for some spots in '09 for '10 race.

I did the race in '09 by getting a slot on line in '08.

If you want to be sure you get to do it best way is to go and sign up. Hard to predict things as procedures change year to year and also number of entries has been going up to about 3000-3200 folks so last year it was a bit easier to get in to most IM races in NA.

People that are registered for 2010 can sign up for 2011 the day before the race...it's a really long lineup, so get your family to help!

Volunteers for 2010 get sign-up early for the following year(2011), so ALOT of people go & volunteer in order to get priority registration.

There are also a number of spots through other races -- qualifying times must be met.

And then there are spots that are held for charity/fundraising groups.

There is the lineup in the park in Penticton method as well. People start forming the lineup after Ironman runs...the same night and they register for the following yr in the morning.

It's a great event and a really amazing day with the whole town out there cheering people on...enjoy

I am looking at doing the IMC 2012 so would probably volunteer next year (this year is a support year for my family), do I just goto the IM website to volunteer for IMC?  Should I put my name in now for 2012 as it sounds like a pretty popular event to volunteer for?  Thanks!

I am not sure if there are changes to processes this year, but in previous years, you just sign up on the website. The volie signup doesn't open till closer to the summer. Once you give them your choices of what you would prefer, the captain for the area will contact you.

They have LOTS of options for things you can volunteer for. There are duties the days before (bleacher setup, bike bar setup, registration, etc etc), on the actual day(LOTS) and take down. The captain of each area clarifies with his/her volunteers that they are okay with what they have singed up for.

So just go onto the Ironman Canada web and click volunteer...when volie signup is up and running for 2010 event, you can sign up for as a volunteer online.

This is my first IMC too!  Excited and nervous.

For registration, 3 of us from Fort Saskatchewan drove down to the 2009 race, caught in some of the action, then drove the bike course.  We then went back to the finish line until the midnight mark (which was incredible as there were a ton of people supporting those that were coming in).  We then went and put down our sleeping bags in line.  We were about 20th in line so in the morning when it started moving, we were in the tent quite quickly.  Once we got inside, someone realized that the volunteers hadn't signed up yet so we waited about an hour in the tent.  Once the volunteers were through, we easily got our slots.

There were a few slots online that were open but that only lasted about 2 hours tops.  I strongly suggest going to the previous year's event to sign up.  It gives you a taste of what the action is all about.

The 3 of us are heading down there on the May long weekend to do the bike course (half on Saturday, May 22 and half on Sunday, May 23).  If there are any others that would like to join us, feel free to let me know.

Cheers!

My first Ironman as well, Just got back from a Spring camp up in Osoyoos. Our long ride was from Osoyoos up over Richter pass through the rollers and up to the summit at Yellow Lake. Oh ya, then return the same way! Total was 82 miles or 132K. Glad I got to ride the toughest part of the course. Will be returning in July to ride the entire bike course.

Went and did some training on the IMC bike course this past long weekend.  Several others there too!

Day 1 we started at the beginning of the bike leg, through town, missed the McLean Creek road hill as our navigator messed up.  Continued through up Richter's pass and stopped at Cawston for a 100 km day.

Day 2 we started in Cawston, rode to Penticton, then went and did the McLean Creek road hill and went onto Oliver for a 107 km day.  From there, we went to Tugulnuit Lake for some open water swimming.

Doing the bike portion of the race on a bike gave us confidence for the race.  Day 1 the cross winds were a very high pucker factor, especially going down the other side of Richter's pass but we survived.  Day 2, I became more comfortable in the aerobars and had more fun in the downhill sections.

I would highly recommend biking the course before the race.  Also a good place to nutrition train too.

Well worth the trip!

We are staying in Summerland at the Pleasantview Motel.  It isn't great accommodations, but there are kitchen units and it is not too far from Penticton.

They may still have some availability.

It will be tough this late.

Good luck.
