Subject: Tempo run HR vs tempo bike HR
I'm a runner who just recently started biking. My 2nd ride this year I decided to try a tempo effort 40min bike and compare it to a tempo effort 40 min run the same day. My results are below.

Bike Avg HR 160 max 169
Run Avg HR 166 max 175

Bike avg mph 22.4, 14 miles
Run avg 6:11, 6.3 miles

So is this normal to have my bike HR this much lower?

Yes.  Very normal.  HR is activity specific.

Would a faster cadence raise my heart rate and take some load off my legs? I have a very good base from running so during the bike I never felt tired or winded but my legs did feel stressed quite a bit. Definitely felt heavy and slow as I jogged around for a few minutes immediately after the bike and the quads were burning a little but the next day I didn't have any soreness.
Thanks

It's possible.  Try riding at different cadences and you'll find what works best for you--balancing the higher turnover against the higher torque at lower cadences.

cadence is an individual thing.  i just try to keep it the same as my run cadence.  having a higher hr on the run is pretty common.  mine is about ~10 beats higher.

Same background (although I've been doing tri about five years). My max on a workout like that is about 6-10 BPM higher for the run. Average HR for a tempo effort run would probably be in the high 150's/low 160's; more like low 140's to low 150's for the bike. Remember that on the run, you are also fighting gravity, as well as moving forward. If conditions are warm, you may also be working harder to cool yourself when running, as you don't have the same degree of cooling breeze that you would on the bike, and that will make your HR higher.

Yep, check out HR during swim some time, far lower than run.

Totally normal (10bpm delta is pretty standard for me).

My last race:
Swim 135bpm
Bike 145bpm
Run 155bpm

My doctor says 140bpm HR is my max, but that feels like a walk in the park... I don't know what to do, how to train, and my motivation is waning. Any suggestions?
