Last fall I started thinking about organizing a BT mini-camp for IM WI in Madison. I floated the idea past a few WI peeps in the fall and posted a thread on it recently in the MN and WI forums to gauge interest. I’ve even gotten interest from folks in GA, so while people are busy registering for ’08 races and planning their race schedule I figured I better post this if others are interested.
The dates for the camp are June 6-8. Here is what I’ve been tossing around in my head for a schedule:
Friday, June 6 Arrive Madison mid-day/early afternoon. Swim the course in Lake Monona. I’ll give a detailed tour of swim exit, helix to transition areas (what’s a helix you ask?), and bike exit out of T area. Followed by optional short run on bike paths around Lake Monona. Dinner and beer in the evening.
Saturday, June 7 AM: drive out to Firemans’ Park in Verona and park vehicles. Ride the course back into Madison and then reverse back to Fireman’s Park. Riders then have the option of doing one or two laps of the 40 mile loop. Optional brick run from Firemans’ Park afterwards. Dinner and beer in the evening.
This strategy is different from what race day will be like because you will be doing the stick out to Verona backwards, but starting out at Firemans’ Park is much more convenient and less congested than parking in downtown Madison. If there is a wide variety of racers, we likely will need to split up into groups based on desired pace.
Sunday, June 8 AM Run one loop of the run course. Camp Randall stadium will be closed though, so you’ll have to wait until race day to experience running through that – pretty cool. Breakfast after run (no beer with your eggs) and depart for home.
I plan on staying at the Super 8 in Madison which is just off of Interstate 94 at 4765 Hayes Rd. (phone 608-240-9335). Its cheap, pretty clean, and plenty of restaurants nearby. Machinery Row bike shop is right near the swim course for any bike-related needs, and I’m sure Verona has shops also. I'll try to work with Madison area peeps to see if we can get some support volunteers. Feel free to do all or just parts of the camp.
This could be the greatest event in the history of BT….well, maybe not, but it should be fun. If interested or have questions let me know in this thread.
