Subject: I love sleeping

Training can really eat into family time, so I try to get my sleeping in during the night or early in the morning.

I try to schedule my long sleep on the weekends and with some dedication I've been able to work up to 8 or 9 hours without stopping - or at least only stopping for a potty break or water break, otherwise I sleep the whole distance. I actually find it easier to train in the off season; harder to get in my sleep mileage when the sun's up before me. I've been able to develop a pretty good endurance base for sleeping this winter.

Yep, sleeping is my best discipline.

I too try to sleep alot. I sleep 6 days a week and then stay awake all night on my rest day. I do have a question that I hope someone can help me with. Often, my foot or leg falls asleep and I have no feeling in that extremity. Is this bad form or do I need to get fitted for my bed?

Is your mattress too high?

Maybe your hip angle is too closed because the length of your bed frame might be too short for your torso.

Good point. I will try to make the adjustments and see if that helps.

On another note, I just bought a SLEEPERVALS DVD and I can't wait to try it out tonight. Has anyone used these?

I've worked up to twice a day sleeping. One long endurance sleep during the night and a short interval sleep during the day. It is doing wonders for my sleep skills. The most rewarding part? When I set a good example for my kids and one of them decides to join me for a sleep session.

I heard of a new triathlon this season... I think it's somewhere around Boston... the three events are sleeping, spin class and strength training.   The organizers have done lots of studies and have some expert opinions on each of the disciplines.. there are some emails quoted on the web site with reference to the studies.

I'm going to sign up today .....  go to www.doctorknowsitalltriathlon.com   I can't wait !!!

Two-a-days are great; in fact, incorporating a brick session once a week can be beneficial. I like to get in a 30-45 min sleep after a particularly hard run session.

Everybody knows that eating-sleeping bricks are the best. My transition time is basically nonexistent, and that's after consuming 1000+ calories.

I've had problems with my nutrition with this type of brick - sometimes it just sits in my gut and I have troble with the sleep leg of theworkout.

Any tips?

I was wondering about proper sleeping attire and it's relation to gains in sleeping time? Also, how does sheet selection factor into this?

Very good question - and very important topic!  I think that attire and sheet selection are the two forgotten aspects of the sleep event.

I have found that I prefer to do my sleep legs in a nice soft cotton blend, shorts and tank top.  This combination, I have found, is not too binding, but does not restrict the overall sleep time.  I always dress as if it is 20* higher than what it is at ambient temps because I tend to exhert heat during sleep.

As far as the sheets I use - I prefer flannel sheets for training and egyptian cotton 300-500 thread count for racing.

Anyone else find this to be true?

I to find sleeping to be one of my better but oft neglected events.  Perhaps I should go get my second workout of the day in now...

In this discipline, I appear to be approaching Jess's level of awesomeness.  Just the other day, I did a 9-hour session at night and another 30 minutes (cross-training on the couch) in the afternoon.

Absolutely. Purely scientific purposes.

Oddly enough, I rarely find motivation for this in the BT forums. In fact, more often the converse is true. However, every now and then, a thread will come along that makes me eager for practice.

I had a stomach virus that wore me out yesterday and I went to bed at 2pm and got out of bed for bath room breaks only. I racked up 16 hours of sleep, while sick! That is true determination..

That's impressive. This is a case of the eating phase making it easier to transition to the sleeping.

I would like to note that some hardcore Ironman athletes take care of their business while on the bike....

If you REALLY want a contest, challenge your cat to a sleep off. Cats are world class sleepers, not like us amateur age group sleepers.
