Yesterday I was on my bike for the first time in a loooooooooooooooooong time and I was just getting the feel of it so that I can get into the riding segment of my training. I pulled up at a light and this group of "elite" type cyclists pulled up next to me. They were all doing the balance thing while waiting for the lights to change. I nodded in greeting to one of the blokes and he just looked me up and down and said " dont stop rideing fat boy" and sped off as the lights changed!

What is it about the elite sports people ..... particularly young men....that makes them so self conceited?

I was so angry at first.....then I felt like crap as I am not a particularly small person....and it was my Birthday!

What a prick!

Something about roadies. Don't get me wrong, I've had some good friends who are roadies, but a lot of them come off as...I guess tossers is as good as word as any.

I rubbed elbows with some of the Mtn. bike pros when I lived in Durango, and for the most part they were pretty laid back and approachable.

Very bad karma for him. To paraphrase the old adage, be careful of who's fingers you step on as you climb the latter, you may meet see them again on your way down.

That is funny, but clearly, the dude takes himself way too seriously.  What I hate most is I'm never around to see it when those kind of folks get their just due.

BTW, If you don't use that as your tag line, I will.  I love it.

Dont worry about it dude,
The roadies in the ville are mostly jokes anyway.
I know of 1 race up there and a self proclaimed A grade club rider got off and walked up the hill in a race.
It was proberly the guy who said that to you,
just makin himself feel better because he is everyone elses joke.

Always consdier the source.  His statement says more about him than you.

Cycling is the sport I hear the most complaints about elitism. Maybe it's the pricey equipment and clothes that starts to set an ostentatious standard about who is best.  Elite swimmers seem to be an ok lot, though there is not much chance to talk, with each of us in our own lanes.  Runners are renowned for egality and encouragement of one another.  Triathletes are also avery inclusive lot.  Roadies need to work on their reputation, particularly with the tyros in their sport.

Don't damn all "roadies" for one ignorant prick's comment.  I am a roadie myself and have never sneered at another rider because his/her bike or shape.  There are people out there in all walks of life who are simply "assholes".  You are a lot more forgiving than me ...  I would have knocked the little prick his damned bike and stomped him to a bloody smear!

LOL! That's what I was thinking as I was reading that.... just walking up to the balancing f**khead and give him a little nudge.... just enough to watch him slowly topple over. Heh, that would be awesome. Maybe toss in a "Well, you skinny little pr***, let's wrestle then!" Of course, because of my particular size and shape (I'm very, um, solid-looking and a little big), people tend to just believe me when I announce that I could kick their ass. I hope no one ever tests the theory, though.

Where in the hell people get off saying things like that, I'll never understand. But happy birthday!

My favorite, "I may be fat, but you're ugly and I can lose weight." Then smear them anyway. I don't know what it is about elitist roadies. I'm a roadie and I say hi to everyone I pass. Even this past Sunday when I was riding around Cherry Creek Res., as usual I made to sure to at least acknowledge everyone I passed i.e. nod, wave, say hi, etc. Nothing in return, from anybody!! Just kept their heads down and no response. Oh well, to hell with 'em. I don't need 'em anyway.

Oh yeah, Happy Birthday!!

I've never been to Colorado, but in college I played football with a half dozen guys from Cherry Creek. First class a$$-monkeys every one of them. I'm sure there are some very nice people there, somewhere. I don't remember where anyone else (of the 80 guys on the team) was from, but they really stood out. Interesting to see 15 years later nothing has changed. As for the comment from the roadie, I struggle with a bit of an impulse control problem (Steve may be able to guess why), so I would have had great difficulty not choking the piss out of him. I'm sorry that happened to you and I'd like to have been there with you. We could have split his lunch money 50/50...

What an ahole! My personal favorite would be to ask him if he would be kind enough to remove his bicycle pump from his a$$ so that you could shove it between his spokes.

Happy Birthday!

my SO has many funny things about people who need to dress all Tour de France to go pedalling around our neighbourhood. the theory is the only reason they ride the bikes is because they can purchase coordinating outfits and shoes.

No offense meant, of course, to anyone here (i myself like all the gear i can buy for all three sports)

Anway, ignore the tosser and hope you had a good birthday

by the way this was not a training ride but just a short ride to see if the bike was safe and to see if I could still ride the bloody thing.
I did have bike shorts on .....for the extra padding for my poor little....er BIG.... bum......not that there is not enough padding on my bum any way........I digress.....

the point is that I did not look like a try hard elitist athlete....or like an athlete of ANYSORT really.....
