I say no, too.

It'd be pretty impossible to perform at your absolute peak in more than one discipline at a time.

No.  But triathlon is 1 sport, so you can still peak for that.

I totally agree. Plus, if Friel says so, its got to be true The man wrote the Bible.

Unfortunately many people buy into that.

I agree with JK and it is something athletes training for Tris should realize. We are NOT training for single sport; we are competing in 1 sport composed by 3 legs. IOW we don’t want to peak in every single sport, we want to be able to complete all legs as fast as possible back to back to back and that is peak performance for triathlons…

Micheal Phelps is able to peak in his butterfly, freestyle and his medley (all four strokes) for the Olympics. Sure, his freestyle could be half a second faster if he was a freestyle specialist, but his butterfly and medley seem to be maxed out - maxed out in the way that he's so fast already it seems impossible for him to destroy the competition any more.

Not saying this translates to jumping on and off a bike, but it could be so - especially when the pro trains 25-30hrs/week, which means 15 hours of aerobic and 15 hours of specific training (I did 15 hours of competitive swimming when I was a kid).

Defining peak as having a PR in each leg, then that would translate to completing all 3 legs as fast as possible no?

But that's not how you'd define peaking for a race.  The rtace is from start to finish.  Not for lap 1, lap 2, lap 3...

"...maxed out in the way that he's so fast already it seems impossible for him to destroy the competition any more."

That doesn't prove he's maxed out his own performance.  Just that he's much better than the competition.

The take-home message for me from this article is that if you want to improve in the off-season it helps to focus on one discipline for a while. During racing season when I am doing each discipline 3 times a week I'm really just maintaining my current levels and not improving much.

depends what type of training load you are doing. While I like the 1 sport focus to achieve bigger gains in a particular sport, in competition you can still continue to improve even if your # of sessions for a particualr sport are less

i.e. you could be only riding 3x week training for an HIM but all 3 sessions are intense (tempo/threshold) and the resulting total strain can be such that it will produce positive training adapations and increase your fitness. You might not be stressing your body as much as you could if training more of course, but for your time available it will enough to help you get fitter. Since time availability is the major limiter for most AGers IMO total training load is the most important aspect to improve fitness/endurance

I agree. I think the times article took a bad slant from a tri perspective. If you goal is to max your performance in 1 sport then it seems fairly obvious that you would not do that by training in 3 different disciplines. The goal (I think) is to max your performance in total. What good does it do me if I set a PR in the swim & bike but have nothing left for the run & I end up slower than my potential. But if I run the total tri in a PR then I have maxed my performance. I just thought the article took a bad perspective, IMHO.

louamerica - 2008-05-09 1:30 PM  another NYTimes article to take at face value ?

Hmmm, I don't even get far. Just glancing at headlines of editions that suckers other people bought is enough for me. Not worth the paper it's printed on.
