I thought the giant footprint fireworks looked amazing.  Only problem is that they were done by computer animation and this fake image was even shown on the giant screens in the Olympic stadium.

Somehow this news does not surprise me...

In the commentary while it was happening, they said it was CGI. The last couple over the stadium itself were real though, I think. They looked it. You could tell the difference between the CGI ones and the real ones.

yeah they definitely mentioned that some of the stuff was computer generated while other things were not.  either way the opening ceremonies were pretty cool.

Besides the theme song, which I think was pretty cheesy, the opening was cool.

I like the 2008 drumming guys and at the end when Li Ning ran around the top of the stadium.

They were the coolest thing ever! A little over the top, but at every turn, there was something new and amazing. I fell asleep during the parade of nations and didn't get to see the US come out .

Same here.  And missed Li Ning igniting the torch.  I had to watch it on Youtube.

definitely over the top, but they have a big enough population to pull that kind of show off. either way, to get 2008 people to move in precision like that is amazing. and that the tai (sp?) chi masters kept forming PERFECT circles w/o markings on the ground? wow.

Yeah, seriously. I don't care that it was over the top - in fact, I thought a lot of it was really cool. Usually, the open show is kinda lame.

I saw that.  I feel bad for the girl who actually sang.  Most people will never know it was her.

Might not be a bad thing.  How would you feel when the whole world knows you are not good looking enough?  Flat face?  Uneven teeth?

Wonder how true these "interviews" are.  There are too many fake things in China that I am skeptical even to these "behind the scene truth".

No, cuz in America, they'd just pick someone hot who couldn't sing. Doesn't matter if it sounds good, right??? :-p

Did anyone also hear about the Chinese gymnasts having fake passports?  I think it was Good Morning America that reported that their girls look more like 12-13yr olds instead of the minimum age of 16.  They do look REALLY young!

Age of 3rd Chinese gymnast in doubt
From cbc.ca

The age of a third Chinese gymnast is in doubt, making half of China's women's gymnastics team possibly too young to compete in the Olympics.

Yang Yilin was born Aug. 26, 1993, according to 2004, 2005 and 2006 registration lists previously posted on the General Administration of Sport of China's website.

Yang is a medal favorite in the all-around and uneven bars, but the previously listed birth date would make her 15 at the end of August, below the minimum age of 16.

Yang's birth date on the 2007 registration list, however, is stated as Aug. 26, 1992, making her eligible.

The ages of two other Chinese gymnasts are also in doubt: He Kexin, a gold-medal favorite on uneven bars, and Jiang Yuyuan.

International Gymnastics Federation secretary general Andrei Gueisbuhler said he was unable to comment on Yang's case without seeing written records.

"If I don't have written proof of something ... we have to take for granted the passports that we've seen and have been checked by the IOC are OK," Gueisbuhler said.

Officials with the Chinese Gymnastics Association say that they have applied for passports for all of the athletes, and that photocopies of He and Jiang's passports, issued in July 2007 and March 2006, indicate they are both over 16.

"The International Gymnastics Federation strictly verified their passports and confirmed that their ages met the age rules for participating in the world championship, World Cup and Olympics," the association said in a statement.

The International Olympic Committee was in contact with the federation and Chinese officials regarding the age issue, IOC president Jacques Rogge said Saturday.

"The IOC relies on the international federations, who are exclusively responsible for the eligibility of athletes," Rogge said. "It's not the task of the IOC to check every one of the 10,000 athletes."

The all-around gold medal is expected to be a competition between two countries: the United States and China. Yang and He were expected to be big contributors for the Chinese, both having scored 17s on the uneven bars this season.

The only member of the American team to score a 17 is Nastia Liukin.

In the gymnastics team finals, three team members compete in each event and all three scores count towards the total.

I hope if those girls are too young then something happens and they are disqualified.  I don't want to see a team that cheats beat any team that is following the rules.  Puts you in the same category as druggies in my book.  Cheating is cheating.  I also naively hope that we catch cheaters through this Olympics.  We already lost one swimmer before Beijing to a failed drug test

Here's a pic - frankly, I think they're both cute and really see no reason for the real singer had to be substituted.

Are we judging them so harsh because they are China??? I do not see them doing anything that any other country hosting the event like this would not do. If it was Canada, for example, I don't think there would be any scrutiny. Just my opinion.

the Today show ripped on them pretty hard this morning over this. That is bad when you tell a girl to sing but stay back here cause your just not pretty enough.

Yeah, but they were busted! Pop stars lip-synch to themselves at concerts, on SNL, etc (and I'm not just talking about Ashley Simpson - others do it as well). But they're doing it to tracks of their own recordings. I think the problem here is WHY they made this girl lip-synch.
