Pro 4311 Texas | Subject: Do Garmins last for a full IM? Assuming that a 305 is fully charged, does it last for a full IM? It wouldn't be used on the swim, just the bike & run, and this would be for someone that's looking to finish in 15-17 hour range. |

Champion 5575 Butler | Subject: RE: Do Garmins last for a full IM? Probably won't make it that long. I think what is possible to do is to turn off the gps function so you only have time for the bike and then go to gps mode for the run. Not sure if you can switch like that and keep total time though. |

Not sure what you're asking, Garmin gives it a "typical "battery life of 10 hours, I wouldn't expect it to last longer than that, certainly not >50% more... I would think a 15-hour finisher would take longer than 10 hours on the bike and run, even if he didn't turn it on until leaving T1. |

You won't need it. Listen up everyone who is about to respond... here's the deal... I have a Garmin and so does my boyfriend (JBrashear). I want to use his for the bike and mine for the run. For some reason he doesn't want me to use his. Here is what I am looking at... 7-9 hours on the bike 5-6.5 hours on the run I need a Garmin on the bike so I can monitor my pause time. I don't want to get off and rest too much and looking at my pause time on the Garmin will help. If I just use my bike computer, I won't get pause time. Additionally, I have an alert set to every 15 minutes on the Garmin so I know when to eat on the bike. I cannot live without this alarm. Then we have the run. I do a 5/2 walk/run combo. So I need to see the time to know when to walk/run. I also need to monitor how fast I am walking and running. AND I need to know my pause time. Let's just say the Garmin is made to last 14 hours... and I am racing for 16 hours. That leaves me 2 hours without any data on the run. That could screw me. Not to mention how bad it would mentally get into my head. So... let me ask everyone this... should my Ironsherpa just let me use his Garmin... or should he worry me like this 5 days before my IM that I might not have a Garmin to use the last 2 hours (13 miles) of my race? |

I would let you use mine but I am unfortunately a slave to it and not dating you so I can't give it up sorry.JBrashear - 2008-08-25 10:57 AM Assuming that a 305 is fully charged, does it last for a full IM? Champion 8540 the colony texas | Subject: RE: Do Garmins last for a full IM? I'd like to add nothing usefull to this thread, as usual.. No the garmin wont last,, I was thinking of doing the same thing, using one for the bike since it's easier to see HR and then use another for the run. I'm thinking that I'm going without for both. Once I'm on the run part it would be nice to see my pace/HR to make sure I'm going ok. but by then it doesn't matter. are you going to wear a regular watch/HR monitor for the race ??could you set that up ?? Do you want any HR info for the 2nd garmin. I'm not sure if both of them will pick up one HR strap |

Then he will be spectating. I will return the Garmin when I am done racing. Gary, I don't care about my HR so that doesn't matter to me. But any Garmin HR strap should go with any Garmin. |

Make her happy let her use two We know you are a kind, sweet, supportive BF as you have shown over and over to Karen. It makes the whole thing simpler other than getting the signals to use two and if she need to use the back light it will suck more battery life out. Karen I found on the run I couldn't hear my beeps for my run/walk intervals because the fans were so loud..seriously. I suggest having a back up plan if that occurs.

Expert 936 Salisbury | Subject: RE: Do Garmins last for a full IM? I think you would be fine with a "cheap" watch that kept time for the bike and use the Garmin for the run. AND you'd still have the cheap watch as a back up for the run. You're going to rock the race!! <--- Meant for KSH obviously since OP isn't racing.
btw..remember, I lost my watch during the swim and still made it through the day

Now that we have a 2 garmin household, I have to make sure I find my HR strap, 'cause my bf's won't work with my garmin. |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Do Garmins last for a full IM? At LP when I caught up to docswim he commented that he was approaching that 10 hour mark and he was surprised it was still working. Well, it crapped out about 20 minutes later or so while we walked together. The idea of 2 sounds pretty cool if you really want to have all that data. But this is your first, and it will be whatever it is so I personally would just relish in the moment and screw the gadgets. But that's just me! |

Iron Donkey 38643 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Do Garmins last for a full IM? Good luck in Kentucky!!My 305 lasted for the bike (just over 7 hours at IM Moo last fall). I used a watch for the run. I wouldn't use the Garmin on the run, IMO, unless it's a ForeRunner - one less thing to carry with you that doesn't have a strap. |

He is a wonderful boyfriend! I am very lucky! Oh, I have to watch the clock to know when to start running and when to walk again. I don't think there is a way to have a 5/2 interval set up... or is there? If I didn't have the luxery of possibly using another Garmin on race day... I would try to make due with only one. OR I would have bought a second one a month ago. If for some reason either Garmin dies on me or it doesn't work... then I'll make do. BUT if I can use both... and both will make me mentally less stressed... why not? Of course, Jonny might have a very good reason for why he needs it on race day. And in that case I need to respect that and run out and buy a second one tonight. |

I've never really looked at my HR during long rides. I just have gone based on perceived exertion. However, I do look at it a lot on my run. Mostly because I find I sandbag a lot when I start to get tired.

The only reason I don't like the indoor mode is then you don't have the maps for later and if/when I do an IM what want to save the data to look at later.JBrashear - 2008-08-25 11:57 AM Assuming that a 305 is fully charged, does it last for a full IM? It wouldn't be used on the swim, just the bike & run, and this would be for someone that's looking to finish in 15-17 hour range. several options... 1. use it just for the bike, as the mile markers are very clear, and HR is sort of useless on the run part of the marathon... but you can always turn it to indoor mode for the run and just hit the manual lap button when you get to the mile markers. 2. Buy the cadence and speed sensor... use it on indoor mode for the bike (uses a lot les battery) and outdoor for the run. 3. Buy the footpod... then it will definitely last if you use the indoor mode for the bike and run. I did IMLP with a 305 and I used the outdoor mode on the bike and the footpod for the run without poblem. I actually used it on the swim as well in a sealed waterproof bag to get total time as well. |
