Subject: I won it on the swim!

Wanted to post that statement as I never before, and probably never will again, get that opportunity.

I won my age group at this past weekend's 600M/18mi/2.5mi sprint, a small race made smaller by the remnants of TS Fay, no big deal coming in 1 out of the 8 people in my AG. But I went back and reviewed the results and saw that the 3rd place guy beat me soundly on the bike (by 3-1/2 minutes) and on the run (by 3 minutes). I picked up less than a minute on him in transitions, but beat him by almost 9 minutes in the swim!

Wish I can say it was something I had done to improve my swim, but my 600M time was a rather pedestrian 14 minutes. What has me curious is what he was doing in the water for over 23 minutes. And look out if he ever figures out what he's supposed to do!

Does give creedence and maybe a different meaning to the old saying, "You can't win a triathlon on the swim but you sure can lose it!"

Congrats Bear, a win is a win, there is no asterisk next to the #1 place you took.  I am slow in the water also......then again i am slow everywhere. :0)

Great job and seriously what is that guy doing in the water?  Maybe he swam the loop twice.  To be that fast on the bike/run and not be able to swim would stink.  I say duathlete for that guy.

It could have been a friend of mine's brother. He rides 24 mph on the bike and runs 6 min miles but swims like a crab. He's gone to TI swim clinics and it hasn't helped him.

But...but...nobody wins races on the swim.

So...the other guy must have lost it on the swim.

Awesome 1st in AG.

23 minutes for 600? That's almost a minute per 25. Wow.

Congrats bear!  Like all great swimmers get out of the water fast and hold them off on the bike and run if you can!

Maybe he was having trouble after you knocked his goggles off and kicked him. Great job on #1.

Upon closer examination, I see that I beat the 2nd place guy by all of 56.2 seconds on the overall time. I beat him in the swim by 52.8 seconds.

Just call me Aquaman!

Edit to correct: I beat him by 56.8 seconds on the swim and 56.2 seconds overall. If our swims were equal he'd have won overall AG by 0.6 seconds.

Cool

Of course, that doesn't take into account the epic sprint that would have taken place in the finisher's chute had you two been .6 seconds apart.

I thought bears were good swimmers anyways.  Where's the hardware?
