Swim
Comments: the results are finally posted. thought i did 1500 or 1450, so i was pleasantly surprised to see my actual distance. kelly kicked butt on the swim. we were in lanes next to each other, so i could see her pass me by! go kelly! What would you do differently?: i was being very careful not to go TOO fast, to save some steam for the bike and run, and also try to avoid the co2 retention thing. could have gone faster, but i was trying to have a good time :) Transition 1
Comments: could not believe we were allowed 10 minute transitions. when i signed up, i remember reading it would be 5 minutes. with 10 minutes at both transitions, we could have gone out for coffee! as it was, it gave me time to regroup and very calmly go from event to event, something i enjoyed quite a bit! What would you do differently?: nothing. Bike
Comments: not sure if raising the resistance was a good idea. could have kept a higher cadence at a lower resistance, but i really had no idea what i was doing. spd compatible pedals were NOT, so i ended up using the toe clips. bike felt good. didn't push too hard. again, next to kelly, so we were able to chat. What would you do differently?: figure out the cadence/resistance thing ahead of time. i spend so little time riding indoors that i have a lot to learn. Transition 2
Comments: got into my running shoes in about 20 seconds, so walked around and shook my legs out while i waited for the running segment to start. again, another 10 minute transition. could have painted my toenails and watched the paint dry. :) What would you do differently?: nothing. Run
Comments: this was my third time on a treadmill in my life. the first was when i was a teenager, and the last was this past season when i was out of town and trying to get a run in. i almost fell off the thing several times. i'd step down not quite heel-toe and almost wipe out. held onto the bar almost the whole time to avoid wiping out! imagine bill murray in 'lost in translation', only instead of a funny guy on an elliptical trainer, its a 30-something chick on a treadmill. still, i kept a pretty good pace (for me). What would you do differently?: learn how to run on a treadmill? Post race
Warm down: shook out my legs. showered. dressed. headed out for lunch and some chocolate torte! What limited your ability to perform faster: this was a whole new experience. knowing what i know now, i may be able to make some changes for the next time. Event comments: LOTS of schwag! t-shirt, visor, swim cap (w/ race logo), lip balm, pen, lunch bag, stress-squishy-dumbbell. i would do an indoor tri again. even though i'm an idiot on the treadmill, it was still fun. there's another one up north in a month, so i may sign up. and, it was fun doing the race w/ kelly! rankings were strange. there were no age groupings. instead, folks were grouped according to staff/faculty, undergrads, grad students, alumni, and community. even though i attended the university for two years, i graduated somewhere else, so i wasn't an alum. and i worked there for over 3 years, but don't any more. so, i was 'community'. within that grouping i was 27/45 overall community, and 11/28 for the community women. for the age group rankings above, i just listed my ranking amid all the women racing (including the speedy undergrads!) yesterday, i drank lots of water and focused on carb heavy foods (eating a bit under 2000 total for the day). went to bed pretty early and slept well. this morning, up at 6ish, had some oatmeal w/ soy milk and honey, half a banana, more water, and a little coffee. kelly got her a bit before 7am and we headed to the race.
we were there VERY early. we checked out the locker room/transition area, locked up our stuff, then went out for a walk around the campus to stretch our legs, kill some time, and calm our pre-race jitters. when we got back, spent some time stretching and getting our transition areas set up.
