Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 50m
Overall Rank = 52/81
Age Group = WMN - ALL
Age Group Rank = 24/52
Pre-race routine:

yesterday, i drank lots of water and focused on carb heavy foods (eating a bit under 2000 total for the day). went to bed pretty early and slept well. this morning, up at 6ish, had some oatmeal w/ soy milk and honey, half a banana, more water, and a little coffee. kelly got her a bit before 7am and we headed to the race.
Event warmup:

we were there VERY early. we checked out the locker room/transition area, locked up our stuff, then went out for a walk around the campus to stretch our legs, kill some time, and calm our pre-race jitters. when we got back, spent some time stretching and getting our transition areas set up.
Swim
  • 30m
  • 1654 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

the results are finally posted. thought i did 1500 or 1450, so i was pleasantly surprised to see my actual distance. kelly kicked butt on the swim. we were in lanes next to each other, so i could see her pass me by! go kelly!
What would you do differently?:

i was being very careful not to go TOO fast, to save some steam for the bike and run, and also try to avoid the co2 retention thing. could have gone faster, but i was trying to have a good time :)
Transition 1
  • 10m
Comments:

could not believe we were allowed 10 minute transitions. when i signed up, i remember reading it would be 5 minutes. with 10 minutes at both transitions, we could have gone out for coffee! as it was, it gave me time to regroup and very calmly go from event to event, something i enjoyed quite a bit!
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Bike
  • 30m
  • 7.25 miles
  • 14.50 mile/hr
Comments:

not sure if raising the resistance was a good idea. could have kept a higher cadence at a lower resistance, but i really had no idea what i was doing. spd compatible pedals were NOT, so i ended up using the toe clips. bike felt good. didn't push too hard. again, next to kelly, so we were able to chat.
What would you do differently?:

figure out the cadence/resistance thing ahead of time. i spend so little time riding indoors that i have a lot to learn.
Transition 2
  • 10m
Comments:

got into my running shoes in about 20 seconds, so walked around and shook my legs out while i waited for the running segment to start. again, another 10 minute transition. could have painted my toenails and watched the paint dry. :)
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Run
  • 30m
  • 3.2 miles
  • 09m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

this was my third time on a treadmill in my life. the first was when i was a teenager, and the last was this past season when i was out of town and trying to get a run in. i almost fell off the thing several times. i'd step down not quite heel-toe and almost wipe out. held onto the bar almost the whole time to avoid wiping out! imagine bill murray in 'lost in translation', only instead of a funny guy on an elliptical trainer, its a 30-something chick on a treadmill. still, i kept a pretty good pace (for me).
What would you do differently?:

learn how to run on a treadmill?
Post race
Warm down:

shook out my legs. showered. dressed. headed out for lunch and some chocolate torte!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

this was a whole new experience. knowing what i know now, i may be able to make some changes for the next time.

Event comments:

LOTS of schwag! t-shirt, visor, swim cap (w/ race logo), lip balm, pen, lunch bag, stress-squishy-dumbbell. i would do an indoor tri again. even though i'm an idiot on the treadmill, it was still fun. there's another one up north in a month, so i may sign up. and, it was fun doing the race w/ kelly!

rankings were strange. there were no age groupings. instead, folks were grouped according to staff/faculty, undergrads, grad students, alumni, and community. even though i attended the university for two years, i graduated somewhere else, so i wasn't an alum. and i worked there for over 3 years, but don't any more. so, i was 'community'. within that grouping i was 27/45 overall community, and 11/28 for the community women. for the age group rankings above, i just listed my ranking amid all the women racing (including the speedy undergrads!)

website says race results won't be posted until the 20th! so, no idea about rank or anything at this point. based on the first two waves, it looked like i was MOP for the women (all age groups). no pictures either, but they may have some on the website soon.

Great job!  I'm not quite sure, but it sounds like the entire race was on indoor stationary equipment?  Sounds like a tough way to race.  Excellent work though Autumn.

yup - all indoor. we could have biked and ran outside today, but it would be a tough day to swim! most of the lakes are still covered in ice (although there are folks rescuing their ice fishing houses off the thin ice who seem to be itchin' for a swim!). it was a fun race.

Wow Autumn...(formerly August)....you had an indoor tri too.  That's so cool.  I think your race is more like a normal tri than mine was...except for the long T1 and T2.  That's wild.  I don't think I've ever met someone who has only been on a treadmill 3 times in their lives.  Glad you didn't get hurt.  Were your kids there to cheer you on?  Congrats on your great race.

Sorry about the mis-spell.  I'm still kind of stupid....

kids were home sleeping! there were no spectators, really. a few watching the swimmers. we were able to watch the swimmers while we were on the treadmills (fellow in lane 1 almost lost his trunks!). kelly and i cheered each other on.

ps. its autumn, but no worries. i get august, amber, april, heather, and 'hey you', and i answer to all of the above.

it was fun doing it together. if you hadn't been there, i would have spent the extra time just figuring out a way into the building or finding the locker room! really though, i had a great time. we should do it again next year. my shoulders and arms are sore today, which is wierd. i've had a much faster pace on a 30 min swim than i did yesterday, but with no soreness. oh well. rest day today and back to the pool on wednesday to work it out.

Congratulations on the race. Nice report.

But this inside tri got me thinking about how they work. Does everyone have to start and stop the events together or how is time kept with a prescibed transition time? Do you have a certain resistance or pre-programed bike/run course on the stationary bike and treadmill or can you adjust the settings as you prefer and just race the prescribed distances. Are the events small so everyone is assigned a bike/treadmill, do you have to wait, or are there waves of participants starting at longer intervals? I'm intrigued by the idea of an inside race. I'll have to look around in my area now.

everyone starts and stops at the same time (30 mins for each event + 10 min transitions). there are lap counters during the swim. at the beginning of the bike and run, they check your starting milage (usually, zero, unless you did some warm up on the machine during transition) and your ending milage.

there was no required resistance for the bike. there is another indoor tri in duluth in a month w/ a similar set up (30/30/30), and in the information packet for that race, they say the resistance will make a difference in your overall milage, but it didn't seem to here (i played around with it on my own machine, and even at the same rpm, the miles weren't piling up that much faster at a higher resistance). it may depend on the machine as to how that works.

there were 14 waves total starting at 8am. kelly and i were in wave 2 starting at 8:35. 10 individuals per wave. logically our numbers were 208 and 209, etc. kelly was in lane 8, on bike 8, on treadmill 8. i was in lane 9, bike 9, treadmill 9.

overall, it ran very smoothly. we were early on in the race, so who knows what may have happened to knock it off schedule as the day progressed. they seemed to be pretty hard nosed about the start and stop times (kelly can attest to this - even though their pedals sucked and it delayed her bike start, she still had to finish along with everyone else).

it was a good work out - like an uber brick! a good way to spend a drizzly february morning, and a good measure of how i am starting off the new season. i took nearly two months off from active training, and really only had 5 weeks of training for this (once you take out a week for the flu), so i was happy with how i did.

the results are finally up! so much for waiting until the 20th! they didn't have an overall option (its in an excel spreadsheet!), so bill combined to make one. i'm on bill's laptop, but i will email the modified spreadsheet to my own computer and then email it to you. if you figured all this out already yourself, email me.

a bit faster on the swim and bike that i thought at the time, and slower on the bike. i swear that resistance thing didn't make a difference! still happy with how i did. may be one of my fastest runs to date...but then again it was a treadmill, which speeds things up, right?

Nice job! My wife and I also raced, and had a lot of fun as well. It was definitely a very well run race, although I agree that the pedals absolutely sucked. I was totally unable to clip in and after spending the first 3 or 4 minutes pedalling and trying to clip in at the same time I finally had to give up and use the cages. I spoke with the race director and they pretty sure they will have one next year...

hey, my dad is also a terry in mn. the race results are finally up, btw, in excel spreadsheet form. the pedals were a pain. did you notice if resistance made a difference in your milage?? didn't seem to make a difference with mine. oh well. still happy with how i did. glad you had a good time. it was very well run and there was an amazing amount of goodies in the bags!

Yes, I've seen the results. You definitely had to play around with the resistance to find your optimal level/RPM...I think I ended up at level 12 at about 95 RPM? The treadmills were a little odd because the belts were narrower than I am used to, but the main problem was that it was so steamy in there! You might have had it better by being in an early wave. We were in wave 7 and were dying on the bike and the run. Fortunately, we were both able to win our divisons though..

congratulations! that's wonderful. i was racing as 'community' even though i attended and worked at the u. didn't graduate from there and no longer work there though. no big wins for me, but that's normal. i'm a pretty consistent mop'er.

we were postulating that the place might steam up a bit later in the day. just the heat from the pool alone, plus all those people working hard on the machines, plus the day was beginning to warm up. it was pretty cool for us in the morning.

again, congrats! if they do it again next year, i'll be there!

we might pass you on the swim (well, kelly will for sure), but you'll leave us in the dust on the run!

i'm not going to be at buffalo. still need to see if i can get my fee moved to next year's race. my cousin is getting married that same weekend in ohio. we actually have two different family weddings that same weekend, so i would have had to miss one way or another. having avery hard time finding another long race, but i want to do more than just the brewhouse long course this year. so, we need to find another race to meet up at. maybe the gearwest duathlon? not a tri, but i think we'll all be there (well, you, kelly, and me).

Er, um... I'm not planning on Gear West at this point... It's HIGHLY dependent on the conditionon of the knee. I could come and cheer you on though!

And yes, Ian, even if we were ahead after the swim, you and Autumn both would quickly drop me on the bike, and then you'd dust us both on the run, so no worries for you!

Lemmee See;
At Nevis we went off in waves. The wave I was in was 4 minutes ahead of the women. Several women beat me out of the water... So I'd still have to make up 4 minutes on the bike and the run to even finish with the same ET
