Congratulations on the race. Nice report.
But this inside tri got me thinking about how they work. Does everyone have to start and stop the events together or how is time kept with a prescibed transition time? Do you have a certain resistance or pre-programed bike/run course on the stationary bike and treadmill or can you adjust the settings as you prefer and just race the prescribed distances. Are the events small so everyone is assigned a bike/treadmill, do you have to wait, or are there waves of participants starting at longer intervals? I'm intrigued by the idea of an inside race. I'll have to look around in my area now.
everyone starts and stops at the same time
(30 mins for each event + 10 min transitions
). there are lap counters during the swim. at the beginning of the bike and run, they check your starting milage
(usually, zero, unless you did some warm up on the machine during transition
) and your ending milage.
there was no required resistance for the bike. there is another indoor tri in duluth in a month w/ a similar set up
(30/30/30
), and in the information packet for that race, they say the resistance will make a difference in your overall milage, but it didn't seem to here
(i played around with it on my own machine, and even at the same rpm, the miles weren't piling up that much faster at a higher resistance
). it may depend on the machine as to how that works.
there were 14 waves total starting at 8am. kelly and i were in wave 2 starting at 8:35. 10 individuals per wave. logically our numbers were 208 and 209, etc. kelly was in lane 8, on bike 8, on treadmill 8. i was in lane 9, bike 9, treadmill 9.
overall, it ran very smoothly. we were early on in the race, so who knows what may have happened to knock it off schedule as the day progressed. they seemed to be pretty hard nosed about the start and stop times
(kelly can attest to this - even though their pedals sucked and it delayed her bike start, she still had to finish along with everyone else
).
it was a good work out - like an uber brick! a good way to spend a drizzly february morning, and a good measure of how i am starting off the new season. i took nearly two months off from active training, and really only had 5 weeks of training for this
(once you take out a week for the flu
), so i was happy with how i did.

yesterday, i drank lots of water and focused on carb heavy foods (eating a bit under 2000 total for the day). went to bed pretty early and slept well. this morning, up at 6ish, had some oatmeal w/ soy milk and honey, half a banana, more water, and a little coffee. kelly got her a bit before 7am and we headed to the race.
we were there VERY early. we checked out the locker room/transition area, locked up our stuff, then went out for a walk around the campus to stretch our legs, kill some time, and calm our pre-race jitters. when we got back, spent some time stretching and getting our transition areas set up.
