Subject: What is your motivation??
Hello All,

I have been following the guy doing 2 Ironmans in 2 weeks... and it got me to thinking...

What is your motivation to race?

This guy his wife has a disease and he want to raise awarness for the diesase.

My Mom has heart disease and I want to stop me from having it and it is my way of supporting her.

Team Hoyt is pretty explainable if you know their story.

What is your reason for Racing/what keeps you going through the pain????

Being in shape feels awesome.  To be in shape, I need to work out consistently.  To work out consistently, I need to be motivated.  To be motivated, I need to have goals.  Enter triathlon.

Oh, and I am super competitive and triathlon feeds my competitive spirit....even though I am usually MOP/BOP.

My motivation? My chronic, currently undiagnosed, terribly frustrating, abdominal pain. I hate it. I hate that my body has so much power over me. And damn it all to hell if I'm going to let it keep me down. THAT is my motivation. Overcoming the parts of my body I can't control.

I've been to countless doctors with countless tests and they can't explain it. I have one last test to do and it's scheduled and I'm praying that it offers some explanations.

I had reconstructive surgery on both of my knees and tore my achillis tendon and after about 5-6 years of feeling bad for myself decided to get off my a** and start working out again. swimming and biking are fine on my body so why not do a tri.......now I love them.

I was thinking about this today actually.  Originally I have no idea what my motivation was, it just seemed like a fun thing to do I think.  Now it's because I've had so much trouble with injuries (and useless doctors who keep telling me that I shouldn't run) that I'm a) pi$$ed off and b) feel I shouldn't waste my good health just sitting around doing nothing.

Something like that anyway.

  • Because I like doing things that many people think are hard or difficult.
  • I like that my wife is proud of me.  I like what it has done for my body and health.  In fact, I would probably train even if I didn't have races.
  • I have always dreamed of doing and IM as far back as I can remember IM existed.
  • To buck the odds and show that someone who doesn't fit the stereotypical image of an endurance athlete can still be competitive.

My motivation?

Well, it's either suck it up and train, or...

I'm shallow too....it's about me.....

I was once a hefty 240lbs. I'm now down to 195. I hate being overweight.

A silly paperweight that says "what would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?" I couldn't answer that question for a long time but now I answer it with the acronyms HIM and IM ;-)

Oh and my SO motivates the hell out of me. She has more faith in me than I deserve...

Mine is the fear of becoming old and decrepit.  I know old man time is going to catch me sooner or later, but I plan on making him work for it.  That, and an IM is something I have wanted to do since watching the Ironman on tv in the 80's.  I saved money from mowing yards to buy the Dave Scott model Centurion "tri" bike while in high school.

I want that IM tattoo and one more thing to cross off the '1000 things to do before you die!' list.

i got tired of being fat and lazy, i was once in phenominal shape (played pro sports) and let it all go to waste in my 20's and 30's, i am ultra competitive, and i could not stand to look at myself in the mirror on a daily basis. I decided to change all that and so far it is working.

2. Motivating others to be in a shape (not including round as a shape here)

3. but mostly so I can eat more

Actually, one of my biggest motivating factors is the clients I care for in a long term care facility, many of whom are severely physically debilitated. I constantly remind myself how lucky I am to be healthy, and to not take it for granted and let my unlimited mobility "go to waste".

Essentially, I run and cycle: because I can. So I do. Because how regretful would it be for me to look back and wish I had. I had an elderly client ask me awhile ago if I was a runner; I'm not sure how she knew, but I replied that I was. She thought for a moment and replied, "I wish I had taken the time to run when I could, back when I had use of my legs. Keep running as long as you can".

So I will.

I just like knowing I am able to go the distance. It always gives me a huge sense of satisfaction to tackle a distance I never knew I was capable of before. I also love just being out there. I love the sense of excitment of a race, I love swimming in beautiful lakes, and I love being able to bike and run courses that I would never otherwise see. It is a wonderful exerience!

The free T-shirt helps too

My motivation is staying on top of the game.  Then moving to another game. Then winning at that game. Then staying on top of that game...

That and I want to qualify for the World Championships in each event at each distance.

X2 froglegs...except for the super competitive part. Also helps to keep me from "...the haze, of alcohol-soft middle age" - Pink Floyd when I know I have to get up early and gruel...

I was a fat kid in highschool and had put on a few pounds in college from just bad eating habits and drinking too much. So I was motivated to cut back on the drinking and fast food (saves money) and the shallowness kicked in because I want to look great at the beach. Long story short just running got boring and the anticipation of the feeling of crossing the finish line for my first of hopefully many triathlons is what keeps me motivated to keep working out and being healthy.

Best answer. I started to do it to get in shape. Got back into it recently because I had gotten out of it so long I was out of shape again.  And I like to eat. But sometimes, being north of 40, I think about not wasting years not doing things.  Plus I just passed the age my father had his first heart attack, and in the back of my mind, I count every year that goes by as one more that I can be more active than he was, and enjoy my life.
