Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4:30. Ate 2 Bagels, skim milk, and Coffee. Left the house at 6:00 to beat the traffic. Drank a glass of heed on the way.
Event warmup:

Stretched slightly, conducted last minute checks on the bake and made several laps around the parking lot to make sure. Briefly chatted (sorta) with a dude parked near me with a new Litespeed Archon. After me making a couple of compliments on his ride he began to explain to me how his Litespeed was so much better than mine (duh) and how if all things being equal, he should be able to outride everybody due to his superior bike...blah...blah...blah.. and how he would do the Gaps in 6 hours...blah...blah.... Dude probably should have put more effort into the engine as that would be pretty apparent later.....
Linked up with Lou, Neal, and Brian for a pre-ride pic.

Comments:

Great Ride. The new approach and finish portions of the ride added some difficulty over the previous years routes. This was the key training session for me in preparartion for B2B and I must say I couldn't be happier with the results. I no problems on any of the climbs and only slight discomfort from my saddle.
The first three climbs went by quickly as I was averaging 75-80 rpm on the climbs while keeping my HR in low Z3. Once I reached Hogpen I slowed my cadence way down opting just to keep the wheels turning. Passed lots of people walking their bikes. I also passed Mr Archon who was doubled over and actually spewing....heh...heh... probably sick of seeing all the inferior bikes passing him..heh..heh... Felt pretty confident on the back side and reached 42 mph on the downhill.
Wolfpen and Woodys went by in a flash! I also opted to ride the ride solo staying out of pacelines and drafts (except at the start).

What would you do differently?:

I realize I probably could have pushed the pace significantly and gone faster but one of my goals was to test my B2B nutrition plan, and pacing by HR. It was spot on except when I grabbed a banana while passing one of the aid stations which gave me a little trouble for a few minutes, and a small handfull of pretzls which also gave me some problems for a short while. So I'm sold on perpetuem. I also tried a baked potato at the run transition. It was awesome Thanks Ilana Katz!
Post race
Warm down:

Stowed my bike, changed into running shoes, grabbed my hydration belt and began my transition run. My original plan was to do 10 miles but I cut the run to 6 miles (1 hr) due to the unexpected extreme afternoon temperatures and very little shade on my run route. I have no doubt I could have finished the distance but at this point in my training I cant afford any mishaps. Especially heat related.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing

Event comments:

Great day training! Congrats to NASMCrs Brian, Neal and Lou for also doing 6 Gap

Sounds like you had a good day, congrats!  Anybody who went out for a run after that ride has my respect.

A bunch of us FL flatlanders were up there as well; I had a good time and the weather was beautiful.

Awesome job!!!  Way to smoke Mr. Archon.  You should have noted his number so you could look up his finish time!!!  Yeah....the saddle is really ideal for aero, and not so much for being back on it while you are climbing, but your IM should be much flatter, no? So hopefully it won't cause you problems.  Awesome run afterward as well.  You'll kill B2B. I have no doubts!

David ... you are the freakin' machine, not your bike.  Nice demonstration of bike strength throughout the day.

More important than smokin' Mr. Achron was that your nutrition worked on what anyone would deem to be an epic ride ... and only you would do a 6 mile transition run.

Good luck at B2B - but I suspect you will not need a lot of it given the work you have put in to be prepared.

"Litespeed Archon" dude is a tool.

"I also passed Mr Archon who was doubled over and actually spewing....heh...heh... probably sick of seeing all the inferior bikes passing him..heh..heh" - best line ever.

Looks like you are set for B2B.

Great ride in the mountains as usual.  I wish I could have been with you when you went by Mr. Archon.  I would have said something funny (to me at least).  Maybe I need one of those bikes.  That must be my problem... yeah now that I think about it... that's the ticket.

Hello Falls-Runner ,

I think  we met .........in front of the High School before Six Gap , I parked next to your frinds and talked a bit with them , before you got there ...... I took the photo !          Anyhow , I did a search on Google , this morning  for  Six Gap Century and found your page , it looks very professional by the way .

I really just wanted to say hello and see if your group does Six Gap every year !  I really loved the event , the  climb from  Turner's Corner to Neel's Gap  was the best  and the decent  from Unicoi Gap was  so smooth and fun it made the trip .

Anyway , I talked Six Gap up  alot  with some of the guys I ride with and it looks like several are interested in 2009 , so maybe we can all ride it together .

       Thanks and ride safe ,

No. Charles is definately not Mr. Archon. He's a great dude and can ride.Mr. Archon is very smug, usually very tired, has a nice bike, and his breath smells of vomit..ha...ha....

I hope you slowed down enough to ask Archon boy if he needed a breath mint.  I'm sure when he got home he neglected to tell his boyfriend about that part of the ride.
