Did my first run right after a bike this weekend (also the first time I biked with a computer with cadence, and I was working hard to keep cadence in the low-mid 90s).  Got off the bike, felt OK, and then started running . . . HELLLOO!!  My legs revolted for the first 100 meters or so and then settled into a nice lead-like state.  I pushed through 2 miles (my distace for the day) at a pace that was about a minute and a half slower that what I had worked up to without biking.  Good news was no major soreness later that day or the next.

I'm hoping someone will have some good news that with more training, the run does not always feel this brutal after biking.

Still Tri-ing, Mike

It always feels a little weird when I start running, but I can say that it does get easier than the first time.  Keep at it!

I had the same problem the first couple of times i did bricks, cramps then dead legs off the bike, it does get better after getting used to doing bricks, and the longer distances you run the better or more normal feeling it gets.

For me the first time was severe cramps in the calves. They got a whole lot less the next time and less still each brick or competition after that.

Yeah, it gets better. Hydrate the heck out of yourself moreso when you're doing a brick and that'll help too.

Bricks alway suck initially.. i remember my first.. i felt worst than the tri t2 transition.... legs were like jelly..

BUT, it does get somewhat easier. it also depends on who you're training with..

After 3 years of doing bricks they are much better.

Keep practicing...

A tri bike helps a lot with post bike running (or probably just adding aero bars). That does not mean that you will be like fresh and rosey like getting out of bed in the morning, but the whole my legs from my butt down to my shoes are asleep is not so much. It often takes a good 1/4 to a half mile to get up to speed or feel normal after riding the bike. As with most things, doing it more makes it easier.

I find that putting it in a lower gear and spinning at a higher cadence for the last 1/2 mile or so does really help with the run.  I am new to this too and I can tell you on my first brick I didn't know how I was going to run and I'm not sure I made it even 1 mile.  I did a brick yesterday and ran 4 miles at my normal run pace so it definetly gets easier.

It gets better.  I just did an Oly a few weeks ago, and I came off the bike, out of T2, and made the comment to a volunteer "did you see my legs run by, 'cause I'm looking for 'em".  She got a laugh out of that.  I felt like I was crawling...and that mile ended up being a low 7-something.  By the time I got about 10 minutes in, I had them back.

Practice those bricks.  I didn't practice them enough (did 6-8 while training for this Oly, did 8-10 when training for my HIM in May).

Happy training!

I took me close to a dozen training BRICKS before it felt somewhat smooth.  With a half mile left in your ride, change into an easier gear and spin the legs faster ...sometimes this helps get your "running legs" ready.  Practice, practice, practice.  You'll be happy you did on Race day.

Two points:

Why were you working hard to keep your cadence at mid to high 90's?
Everybody has a natural cadence range and it ranges from 80-100 It is not one size fits all.
Do not try to keep an artificially forced high cadence if you are not comfortable with it.

When you run after bicycling the brick effect lasts about 3/4 of a mile for most cases, after that it is basically running on tired legs no matter what you did before the run.
Basically the beneficial effects of a brick workout is good for about a mile. If your day does not call for a long run you do not need to run more.
Do not extend your run more than a mile to get used to that dead legs feeling.

The legs have to 'learn' to transfer blood rapidly from one set of muscles to another. Bricks will help speed the process of getting those capillaries open to redistribute the blood.

Once I get to that point, I may do only a few bricks a year.

On a related note, I think the cadence of 90+ is a good thing. Give it time if it feels uncomfortable. It'll become second nature and your running legs will thank you.

It does get better, but it takes time... and that's the whole purpose of doing brick workouts.
