Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It’s time for a challenge for those that like to get dirty! This is a mountain bike challenge for the month of May, from May 1st to 31st, 2009. This has to be done a little different than the road cycling challenges, because counting straight miles doesn’t give credit for really gnarly rides. So I have come up with a point system for each ride. How it works: HILLS TECHNICAL Night rides: For night riding, bump up a tech level. So a trail normally a C would be a B at night. TIME (actual rolling time) POINTS:
The order from D to A is backwards because that aligns more with the current lingo in the mountain bike community. Crazy hard rides are known as A rides, while easier rides are known as C and D rides. Example: I’d give the trail a Hill rating of C, Tech rating of C, and Time rating of C since I rode 1.5 hrs. In the points table, C’s are 2 points, so that’s a total of 6 points for that ride. I’d log my cycling like normal in my BT blog but put in the description that it was a mountain bike ride worth 6 points. At the end of each week we post how many points we got. More points is better! Hills – pretty self explanatory. Technical – This is a little more subjective, so I’ve tried to provide examples. Time – This is actual rolling time on the bike, not counting resting, chatting, posey sniffing. Minimum ride time is 30 minutes to count. Races – Note that a mountain bike race gets an A rating for 4 maximum time points (hills and tech ratings depend on the race course and are up to your discretion). This must be an official mountain bike race to count, and you do not have to have raced for 3+ hours. If you race for 45 minutes, you still get 4 points. I wanted to give extra credit to those that go out and challenge themselves in races. If you DNF the race, give yourself the normal time points (gotta give props to those that finish!). The mountain bike portion of XTERRAs (off-road triathlons), off-road duathlons, and adventure races count. GUIDELINES Trails: Commuting: Blogging: Teams: In the words of Mike Rowe: “Now get ready…to get dirty!” |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am interrested, but this seems pretty complicated. I just like numbers. So this is how I am going to think about it. LOL HILLS-POINTS TECHNICAL-POINTS Night rides: For night riding, bump up a tech level. So a trail normally a 2 would be a 3 at night. TIME -POINTS (actual rolling time) POINTS:

Sensei ![]() | ![]() oh crap. I'll play... First ever challenge, so I'm not sure what to do, but I will follow along with the rules. I am also not sure how much I will get in. Maybe one ride a week, but I have a couple races in May. I assume the bike portion of the XTERRA counts... |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay, I'm in - I too find the math daunting (Adding! Argh!) But will probably be able to cope. Now I have to actually exercise this month, bummer. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think I shall participate! Perhaps I can talk Erik into participating vicariously through me..... I'm sure Elaine in her infinite wisdom can whip up a really easy to use spreadsheet.... |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() wgraves7582 - 2009-04-21 5:19 AM Count me in - I know you are shocked right? So what if my pavement takes me to the dirt trails (about 10 miles each way) - should I just count the pavement as a commute for my challenge and just total up my dirt time? Yes, it's becoming a who's who of BT mountain biking. ![]() Yep, you can count the road as long as the trial isn't something like a mile long. If the majority of the total ride is on dirt and you're riding road to get to the trail it counts. |

Ha! I'm a little intimidated with the math as well. But I figure I ride mostly the same trails. Once I decide what they are, then all that plays factor is how long I'm out there. Now just figuring out what they are...... So, if I have a route that use to be an old NORBA race course. What do you think they would average out to be - difficulty wise? Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Will this be individual or team? I forgot that the last week of May I'm out of town and can't take my MTB, although I might be able to rent one where I'm going. If we're doing teams, I wouldn't want my absence to hurt my team. If individual, I don't care; I just want to have fun doing this and get in some MTBing even if I end up coming in dead last. What's the penalty for coming in dead last? Do we have to write on our signature lines something like "I want to wear PirateGirl's eye patch as a thong?" I can deal with that. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike, I would not worry about the week out. I think everyone has some form of commitments that will limit the amount of time we can ride. I think its a Team thing, or at least that is how I read it...don't care either way but in the event it is, I could pitch in a couple extra rides to carry your weight. Maybe double up with some night rides...I usually take my boyz (two dogs) and they would love to get double sessions in. Take the challenge and join... Jed |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MikeTheBear - 2009-04-21 10:32 PM Will this be individual or team? Whatever folks want to do. It's the first mountain bike challenge, so we can make it what we want. ![]() So do folks want to do teams or individual? I'm fine either way. |
![]() ![]() |
Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was thinking about this on the drive into work, and I'm thinking teams would be best. It helps keep folks motivated and every little bit of riding helps the team. Whereas if it 's individual, it's hard to keep motivated if one person is running away with it all. I know I tend to get into the "why bother" attitude if there's no mathematical way for me to catch up. Whereas with teams it all depends on how well the team as a whole is doing. |
