Came across this.  Hits home a lot

Hang in there - you're doing great!

Last weekend during my LONG ride, I received support from a very unexpected source. 3:48 into my ride, and I was this close to throwing in the towel, getting off my bike and chucking it onto the nearest tank trail on Camp Pendleton. All while praying that a Marine Tank would come along and crush it (luckily for me, they weren't out on Saturday). I don't normally hate my bike, mind you, but for some reason, Saturday's ride was tough.

Welcome to Ironman training!

There will be good days, bad days, days where you wonder if you'll ever be able to do it, days where you question your sanity/drive/emotional stability/happiness/feel-free-to-fill-in-the-blank-with-your-own-choice-word, days where you wonder how you'll ever get through xx workouts - and then you do... There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. Yes, I am in full Ironman training mode.

Thanks Coach!

I haven't gotten to that stage yet.  4 hrs/85 miles is still fun on the bike.  I may want to bookmark that one for around Mid July.

I've been having these moments lately. I've been so strict with my training plan that somewhere in the back of my head I am convinced that I deserve to slack on a few workouts. Mostly when it comes to swimming. The last few weeks I've been driving to the pool thinking "this is the day I slack" but I always end up doing the full workout and then some.
The weather is starting to get nice here in Maine so that should help me stay motivated.

87 more days......

That was a good one.

Amazing where the inspiration comes from when your spirit is just totally crushed.

Great one Dan!  This year I seem to have had more "life happens" days than good training days. IMLP is coming up fast and I can pretty much say that I won't be prepared to race it. If this was my first Ironman I would really be in panic mode about finishing the race. Having done a few IM races I know I will finish and have a blast doing it, just not as fast as I had hoped.

If IMLP was my only IM race this year I would be pretty depressed about my season. Fortunately I am doing IMWI and feel that IMLP will be a great "training day".

IM training definitely brings out some serious emotions. Long rides and long runs are sometimes filled with doubt, sometimes filled with adrenaline but after almost every workout you know that you're one step closer and you keep on going. Training for my first IM was a very selfish endeavor. I was more concerned about getting a workout in than I was in spending time with the family. Most of my training was at ungodly hours in the morning (or middle of the night for most) so I didn't interfere with the family time. Looking back, I was so tired and short tempered during the family time that I missed out on a lot of it.

Do what you can, when you can is how I train now. I love triathlon training and I really enjoy the IM distances. There's nothing like the feeling of finishing a 140.6 mile race that ends in a marathon with a smile on your face!

Train smart, train hard to reach your goals and keep everything in perspective! Enjoy life and live each day!

This is great.  One of the things that makes racing the IM that much more special.  When we cross the finish line and thing of all the sacrifices we made to get there (including working through mental anguish and pushing through mental training barriers).

Great stuff!!

I had a couple of those days last year and believe me come race day that workout will cross your mind.  It will motivate you all the way to the finish line.  And if you had bagged it, it would have haunted you.  Kudos to you on getting out the door...payday is that much closer.

You guys should check out her whole story.  SHe broke her sacrum on a training ride last year.   California 70.3 was her first race back, and she Kona qualified.   She's legit.  If she can go there mentally (wanting to quit), we all can

Other than death, or loss of family/friend at that time, a debilitating disease, or natural travesty like a hurricane/tornado/lightning storms, then there should be no excuse for IM training!

Always look on the bright side of life!

The author is an amazing athlete, and a very nice person. Her husband is a Marine pilot, who was one of my students in advanced helicopter training. Her story is inspiring.

I just re-read this today. Thought I'd give it a bump for other Ironman-in-training peeps that need a little lift. Mental demons have been having a field day with me this week.

Just thought I would top-post that Marit finished her first IM at CDA on Saturday with a 2nd place in her AG (only 45 seconds behind 1st) and 9th place amateur woman. She already had a Kona slot from Oceanside 70.3 this year! I was thrilled to be there to cheer for her and give her a big hug after she crossed the finish line. Her race report should be up on her blog later this week.
