Subject: Counting laps in the pool--how do you do it?
Now that I'm actually able to survive swimming for longer distances, I'm swimming fairly large numbers of laps in my local 25m pool... I guess I'm still inexperienced enough and am focusing on technique, etc. while I swim so I'm easily distracted and lose count of laps during a long swim.

I've seen a couple products out there, and I can't wait for the SwimSense SPM to come out, but what do you guys use for counting laps?

Probably one of the most asked questions on the site (next to what do I wear under ny bike shorts)

Do a forum search and you will find countles suggestions.

Mine is using the lap timer on my watch and hitting it every 100 yards.

I bought a cheap timex watch for like 15.....has only 30 lap buttons, but if I lap every 100, I can count out a 3000 yard w/0 with only having to count to 4....this is much easier.

most of my swim are in sets that are easy to count out.

when I do a 1000 yard TT, I have run into problems, I find it easy to break it into 10 100s....1-2-3-4, 2-2-3-4, 3-2-3-4, 4-2-3-4, 5-2-3-4, etc.........

Listen to Tricrazy and get the SportCount. I've never missed a lap after buying it. I think too much about stuff when swimming, so this was a life saver.

Either hit the lap button on the watch or move an object (e.g. water bottle) over one tile.  Also if I'm going a certain distance and and I forget to mak a lap I know my general pace so it is easy to figure out how far I've gone based on time.

I'm with 'cuse on this one...I find I focus better on my form as well, vs. letting my mind wander..not that it never does..but still....I break it into sets of ten...1-1, 2-1, 3-1 and so on...congrats on swimming longer distances..way fun!

I keep my sets at 20 lengths or under since keeping track tends to be difficult for me.  On 500 meter sets (20 lengths) I'll leave my watch at the pool's edge.  I know I should finish at around 8 minutes, so if I finish at 7:20 I know to do another 50 meters.  My pool has a nice big time clock which I'd use instead of my watch, but I'm too near sighted to see it.....

I just count, and yeah it can get ugly, but in general, it's not too bad. Just wait till you start to need to count laps *and* intervals. That's when I use pennies to keep track of the intervals.

I generally count by 100's - 1-2-3-100, 1-2-3-200. Since I generally count strokes each length, this helps keep things in order. I also know that my times are all around 1:40/ 100 for long so I can keep track to make sure that I haven't missed anything.

I can't do it in my head because my mind wanders...a lot.

So I have 2 methods.

1. Move something around the tiles (water bottle, sandals, etc.) after each lap. Easy to count, but disrupts rhythm.

2. Hit my lap button on my watch after each 100. A bit disruptive, but not as much as #1. The nice thing about this is that I can go back and check my lap times to see if I forgot a lap or two, which I usually do. (i.e. hit the button after 150 instead of 100).

I've thought about a Sportcounter lap watch you wear on your finger, but I can't justify the cost...yet.

I usually break it up by 200s. I also tend to count down instead of up. So if I am doing 1000 after the first 200 I tell myself 800 left. Then keep counting down till done. I don't stop at the walls, but if you did you could possibly use the lane divider like a counter, slide em to one side then slide over a ring at a time per 100 till done. Unless your pool is busy, then they may get messed up.  I've never tried that, but it may work.

I think about the significance of the number. Lap 8...Cal Ripken!  10....high school volleyball number.  21....ohhh, fun times turning 21.   You can still focus on technique and, for me, it's easier to keep track of a Cal Ripken lap instead of what number I'm on.

THAT thing is probably the best $30 I spent!  I got the combo - which is a counter and a stop watch.  I even use it for a timer on my runs...(I haven't gotten into calories burned or distance or HRM yet...)

I repeat the alphabet and think of things that go with that letter (such as:  a = apple pie, asparagus and apples, b = bananas, blueberries and beaches, c = courage, Chicago and canteloupe)

It keeps me entertained and I always seem to remember what the last lap was.  As you can see, food is a favorite topic.

I just count and use my watch to back me up when I think I may have zoned out and forgotten a lap.
