Total Time = 3h 16m 34s
Overall Rank = 117/154
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 2/
Pre-race routine:

Had three good hours of sleep and then woke up every hour. Finally up at 3:30am for the usual coffee and 1/2 bagel.
Event warmup:

Settled into the water and did 1 loop of the swim course, chatted it up with a bunch of people and nothing more.

One thing I did notice is how few women were doing the Oly, only about 25%. Not sure why, the Sprint was full of them.
Swim
  • 32m 47s
  • 1650 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

1st 2 loops were like a dream, the last one I got caught up in the M25-29 start and got swam over twice, elbowed and a host of other fun stuff. It threw my rythm into chaos until they got ahead of me. Overall, this was the highlight of my day and that is a VERY ironic statement.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster than the 25-29M!
Transition 1
  • 04m 20s
Comments:

Since this was nothing more than a big training day for me, I was methodical and didn't hurry a bit through this process, OBVIOUSLY!
Bike
  • 1h 35m 6s
  • 25.6 miles
  • 16.15 mile/hr
Comments:

This was my third week in a row of racing so my coach wanted me to stick in Z2/3 and only hit Z4 for the climbs. YEAH RIGHT. This is my first effort on this type of terrain so I found myself panting like a dog, well into Z5 on most of them. I have a double and was in the easiest gear spinning away the best I could. Tried to recoup on the descend. Overall,I am happy with this performance-I didn't fall over and I never had to walk my bike like some of the other people did.

My biggest mistake was fueling. I just don't have it down on how to do that on the bike. I had a new rear bottle holder installed for this event, but couldn't figure out when to use it, up the hill I was dying and down the hill didn't seem right either. I maybe took in 8 oz of fluid and 80 calories. Not enough.
What would you do differently?:

FUEL! The ride was good, the decision making on fueling was awful.
Transition 2
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

Strolled through T2. I was a little looped at this point. Grabbed 8oz of Carb Pro and hit the road.
Run
  • 1h 01m 40s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

This was one of the most awful performances. Normally I am struggling to breathe because I am above my LT, today not so. I did take my inhaler in T2, but I had zero energy to keep going. Started walking up the first "mountain" and was planning to run down it. NOPE--hamstring cramp. Blew at least 2 minutes trying to get rid of it while hobbling down the hill. The remainder was a spent talking myself into running from one sign to another and hoarding H20 which by now was a little late. Finally got it together the last half of the last loop, but by then my time was in the toilet.
What would you do differently?:

FUEL on the bike. Real rookie error. I absolutely detest walking on the run!
Post race
Warm down:

It was 85F at the end so I basically drank down two bottles of H20 and waited for a friend to come in. Looked at the food, but nothing seemed even remotely appealing.

Slammed some chocolate milk when I got to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bad hydration and calorie consumption on the bike. It was hot, but my legs were not cashed, my head was.

Despite downing 40oz of fluid post race my weight was still down over 2lbs when I got home and I weigh 100lbs Dumb.

Event comments:

This event was put on by RACEDAY EVENTS LLC and it was top notch. I know the RD and was really pleased to see how well his company did. It started on time, the course, was marked, the volunteers happy, and while it was a difficult course it was well worth trying to conquer. I will definitely do this next year and be more prepared for it!

Sounds like a tough day at the office out there Suzy.  Way to finish it up.  Keep us posted on the nutrition front, with my international next weekend I have been mulling this over a lot.

Saying that having a great swim for you is an "ironic statement" is not quite true.  You have busted your a$$ the last few months to be a very fine Minnow....and today just proved it.

So proud of you.  You will figure that nutrition thing out like you attack everything else.

Great work out there. Hey, do you have an aero bottle for your bike - the kind that goes between the aerobars? Getting one of those REALLY helped me on my water consumption. Hands-free drinking rocks. (I don't use it for anything other than water, because it splashes. But, it sounds like you could use some assistance with the water consumption, too.)

Nice Job Suzy even it was only a tune up race. Swim time has really improved, you'll be ready for that 1/2 no sweat girl!

You did great on what sounds like an incredibly tough course.  That's a lot of climbing for that distance.  Good job!

Looks like a great "training" race to me -- you sure learned a lot. Congrats on the great swim and on really working the bike (not a bad time at all considering all the climbing). You'll figure the rest out!

Great race!  And I mean that b/c I have done that course and its tougher than any Oly course in the area.  Doing Observatory hill twice and not even getting to enjoy the descent b/c you have to make that quick left turn at the bottom. [they had a dude playing bag pipes the year I did it].

Not sure you read my RR before you did this, but your RR sounds EXACTLY like mine.  Didn't hydrate, hills beat me up on the ride (they do everyone) and then I couldn't run.  And that run course is stooopid.  You have to climb that mountain 3x.  STOOPID.

And although my splits were the slowest ever for an Oly, I got more out of that race than any other.  I will bet it does the same for you.  Every other race seems much easier after that bad boy.

Also, very impressed with that swim!
