Subject: Ditched the headphones while running
After I did my first Tri a few weeks ago I stopped wearing headphones on my training runs. This is because I could not focus during the run and my mind kept wandering. I'm not sure if my running has just gotten better or if running with out them has just made me a better runner but I've dropped :45 off my comfortable pace, and my HR is staying in the 150-160 range.

Anybody else have better performance with no headphones and just concentrating on running?

Joe

Having or not having music is not really going to have any sort of impact in your running fitness.  You probably have gotten faster because you are running and training.

But congrats on losing the headphones!  I personally always run without music.  Allows me to focus on what I'm actually out there to do which is run.  My preference, no better or worse.

Headphones are the devil.

They are for people walking a 5k.

Sometimes I train with them, sometimes I don't. Don't miss them when I don't have them, and "performance" never suffers when I do. But then I never judge "performance" when I'm training.

Still don't understand what kind of "focus" is needed to run. It's left foot, right foot, repeat. My mind wanders regardless.

Thanks! I know the performance increase is from running more (and shaving my legs).

I also attribute it to focusing on running and not singing along to joan jett as I plod along!

My mind wandered once.. and still hasn't returned.

When I first got back into distance running a couple years ago, I ran with tunes (everyone else seemed to be doing it, so there must be something to it, I figured). Then I discovered I wouldn't be able to run any "real" races with music, so I ditched the ipod.  I learned to love it quick - my running improved more consistently with no music.  When the rules changed to allow headphones at USATF-sanctioned races, I decided to try a training run with music again to see if I was missing out on anything, but I absolutely hated it.  I don't see how people can do it - with music right in my ears, I feel very out of touch with what's going on both with me & around me.  But, to each their own - whatever works for ya!

Cheers, Chris

Sometimes I cheat during races and sing a song in my head. Sometimes, it's one I actually LIKE.

I got a Miley Cyrus song stuck in my head one time while running.  The St-st-stuttered song thanks to hanging with my buddy's 7 and 9 year old daughters the night before.  I was trying to run away from the pain so hard, that if I was in the NY Marathon the Kenyans would be saying to each other "What was that huge white streak?"

I only use a MP3 (I'm not cool enough for an Ipod) for treadmill running and weight lifting.  I mainly just switch songs a bunch on the treadmill to pass time and I use it in weight lifting mainly becuase people won't talk to you with headphones in.  Plus my gym is one of those fancy gyms with spas and other yuppie stuff in it and they play some god awful music in there.

I do enjoy the outdoor sounds, especially because nature is close at hand around here. The weather, the animals, the other people and vehichles, are all good to be aware of. It's understandable why some people like music, but sweaty tunes in my ears does not sound appealing.

I used to think that headphones were for people who weren't focused on their workout. This was because for me, if I pushed myself even a bit into a faster pace, I couldn't focus at all on the music, and needed to focus on pacing and breathing steadily. Even now, running at faster than conversational for me is a very "active" process, and even if I zone out, it's directly because I'm focusing on the task at hand.

Then I found out that Ryan Hall, the fastest US current marathoner, often trains with an ipod. If it's good enough for him, it's definitely good enough for all of us.

(I still can't do it, though!

I'm about 50/50 on training with headphones.

When wearing them though, I don't always listen to music.  Lots of books on tape/iPod, and a few pod-casts, especially during the NFL season.

I always find if somewhat funny when people state they can't run without them, yet most races don't allow them.

any runs over, oh, about 3 miles and i really really really REALLY (did i say really?) like having my ipod shuffle.  i run faster, i enjoy the run more and i don't get stupid things stuck in my head or think about work (i HATE thinking about work when i run) ... so maybe i'm a loser who should only be doing 5Ks, but i love having music when i run, even though i know i won't be able to have it with me when i race.  (then, in all honesty, i usually have a song in my head.)

I like running with music... but I try to listen to music that only matches my pace... which can be hard to come by sometimes.  But I much prefer them on shorter runs, kinda helps me with the mind of body thing like when my legs start screaming and my lungs are keeling over on me.

Training with headphones impairs your ability to focus on your training, both form and effort. IMHO. What is worse than running with headphones is cycling with head phones, and the only thing worse than that is swimming with headphones. If you want to pay attention to form, ditch the music. If you are putting in mindless miles try Nickelback.

Congrats on ditching the headphones.

Never used them, no interest in them.  It's not that they're evil or anything (although I think they don't belong on the race course)--my wife loves hers and esp. likes her running MP3s by Joan Benoit Samuelson--but I run at too many different paces to want to eff around trying to create appropriate playlists of varying intensities and I do believe there's a whole lot more going on during a run than some of the resident wits here might want to admit (and the mind can actually really only actively focus on one thing at a time).

I agree I do not run with music because I run through a bad area and like to be able to hear is someone is running up behind me.

5 Blocks to the Subway... I can do that anyday. [Biohazard]

but back on subject, I didn't realize that I completed todays run without my music until I read this thread. Guess I didn't miss it much, but I do like having it. Seem to check the watch a lot more often when Im not listening to music. Further, I've never felt the need to sync my stride to my music... would usually end up with some funky disco stutter steps if I did try such thing. Just me, YMMV.

Running with music in no way, shape or form hinders my ability to focus or maintain form. It probably actually helps me focus more and motivates me to keep running...running for an hour is not easy...I can run without music at races because there is tons of things going on to keep you entertained and the environment is awesome. If I run without my music on my regular running route all I'm going to think about it is how effinn hot and miserable it is outside and why I'm running in 110 degree heat right now and how i've only ran for 10 min and I've have what....50 minutes to go....FML.

I think it depends on the run I am going to do... If it is short like 5-6 miles I will not wear them or if i am focused on some sort of plan for the run. If I am just going out for a fun run because it is a pretty day I may take the head phones because it is nice to see a beautiful day and have your fav song come on. Kind of like a great drive with some good tunes....

I used to do some Ultra training and let me tell you on a 30 mile run you have plenty enough time to have your thoughts to yourself, I prefer headphones to block out the constant voice in my head that says "go home go home go home"... so on long runs I always carry them because after a while I just bore myself with my thoughts...

So it really depends on what I am doing. But I do like the headphones but I do not need them...

I am old. So, when walkmans came out and I got one as a gift, I tried to run with it. Besides being too big, I apparently had been running too long without and didn't really like it.

I love my iPod, but I still don't run with it. It just never appealed to me. For training, I only use it when riding on the trainer because it actually helps me focus better there. In fact, I am thinking of trading my very ancient second generation iPod in for a shuffle so I can have something a little smaller to clip to my body. (I'll still have my iPod on my iPhone.)
