So I am doing the Calgary 70.3 this weekend. 1650 people doing it, by far the biggest race I have done, usually around 100-200 people. 11 waves, staggered by 10 minutes each. (it is a one lap swim)

First wave starts at 6:50 (pros).
My wave (last one m 30-34) starts at 8:30.

I just find this super bizarre. Why Why why why why.

Just saying.

that is a smart way to do it...break up those draft packs.

It could be worse, Chicago Transition close at 5:30 and waves are still going off after 10am.

waiting for your wave to start is most exhausting part of the morning- the rest of the race is cake

i had that happend....race start was 7 and our wave start 8:20 30-34.

i had a time to go to the bathroom 2 times.  its tiresome and considering that the heat in florida raises quickly, i wish we started at 7....

Not sure why you find this bizarre, wave starts are pretty standard bigger races.

I find the ten minutes between waves kind of over-done, though. Most I have done start waves every 3-5 minutes.

Just be happy you know the wave starts going in.  My first (and thus far only) tri, a sprint, had a wave start and I was in the first wave (all M18-29 age groups).  However, there was a TON of wind that day, there were buoy's getting lost left and right and there was something with the firefighters who were supposed to be on scene for the race.

Almost two hours after we were supposed to go out we finally hit the water...only to tread water at the start line for another ten minutes.  Very frustrating start.

Yes, the 10 minutes is the strange part.  3-5 minutes seems more typical.

Ouch, and I thought I had it bad waiting more than two hours for NYC on Sunday.

(Partial thread hijack)

I thought you couldn't get any outside help after they close the transition area and the race starts. I don't know why I thought that. My last race had 5 waves 5 minutes apart and I was in the last one. I stood in ankle deep water in the freezing rain for 30 minutes. Could I have worn rain gear then gave it to my wife a few minutes before my wave started?

Well never done an M-Dot before. When ever I saw the IM Hawaii they seem to start all at once. I mean, I get it, the lake probably cannot handle1700 people starting at the same time. But, it could, people would file in, the ubercompetitive could elbow for space near the start, the slackers could just wade in after about 10 minutes.

And, yeah, the 10 minutes is a lot. I would get 3 minutes, that would break it up. I imagine the fast swimmer would catch up to the slowest swimmer in the heat before about 5-10 minutes into the swim and then they get to draft the whole way, so I do not know how it effects the ability to draft. As someone pointed out in another thread, if you start last and you are a fast biker, you are going to be drafting (legal) the entire bike course as you speed by those who started in heats prior to yours.

I guess I am also a little dissapointed, although I knew it would be a wave start since I signed up, I was kinda looking forward to experiencing the full on 1700 people mass start.

The only M Dot races that do mass start are IM distance races other than KY.

i feel ya,

i'm in the last wave (18th - M25-29) this weekend at steelhead.  It being my first HIM isn't going to make the cutoff time any easier to think about.

When I read the thread title I thought this was going to be about suggesting the M-Dot corp adopt a wave start strategy. I realize the ultra distance races have major time concerns and can't have a lot of time between first wave and last wave, but the crowded swim in many of the large races seems to be of major concern to a lot of people. I prefer a wave start, even if I did have to wait an hour and 40 minutes last Sunday from transition closing to my wave starting. And that was for an Oly.

I did a race this past weekend where my wave went off at 9:15 -- and there were two waves after mine. I do understand where you're coming from. It's frustrating when your wave goes off 2 hrs after transition closes. It kinda throws you off.

starting in a later wave is fine as long as it is clear before the race when you will start. if a race posted start is at 7 and the first wave starts at 7 and each wave is 4 minutes apart and I am in the 4th wave - I know I am starting just before 7:30 -ALL IS WELLHowever, half the races I have done started 10 to 30 minutes late and wave start times were not consistent so if I have my last pee, gu and water for a 7:30 start and then wait another 34 minutes and 16 secs my game plan is messed up. some races don't post wave start times before the morning of the race which is annoying too.I like being in the first wave so when I cross the line 2nd or 3rd it looks like I am second or third. Most races even though I am in the top 10 it looks like I am 67th. I like being in the last wave as well so I constantly have someone to pass. It is also kinda fun finishing well after the first few runners only for them to find out they were beat.

Didn't do one. I find that I am awful at getting around to reading all the race reports I want to read and should read, so I don't write any so that no one feels obligated to read mine or that I don't feel guilty that someone read mine but I didn't get a chance to read theirs. I did write a little about it my log if you're terribly interested.

Hawaii 70.3 was a mass start. I'd rather wait around for a while to get more open water.

at Boise 70.3 - the last wave to go, 55 mins after the pro's - was my wave, 18-29 M.  Needless to say, it was a PITA passing a bunch of the people both on the swim and on the bike who had started in the other waves.  it was impossible not to draft.
what is the reasoning for this? why not start the pro's, then either just go by age, or the faster age groups first (18-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-45) or something like that?  i know there will be fast people in every age group, but starting a 'faster' group at the end doesn't make sense.

NE Season opener?  What a nightmare that was waiting for them to solve all the problems.  I did the newbie division, so was that last group to go.  It was probably close to 2 hours from when I left my TA to when I started.  Once the race starts though everything is forgoten about.

I've been wondering about the wave, I think I heard my first is a wave start but I may have read wrong (lake lanier islands sprint).

Is it common how they space out the groups, I mean like do certain groups tend to be in the sme order? Two people said so far that the mens 25-29 range was towards the back, yet going over some of the times that and the early 30s always seem to have a bulk of the 20 overall in the swim times. Seems odd to put them in the back so they are forced to get through people they are faster than.

The swim is my strongest since that is what came back the fastest after not doing any of the 3 sports for years. Looking at times I should be in the top 10 and possibly top 5 but if I have to go through people that could throw it off. Plus passing people doesn't really motivate me as much as knowing if I was in an earlier wave and I got out a head of people. If I could see and know I was doing well in the swim being one of the first into T1 that would help me mentally

So... What are the "rules" during the wait time? Are there any? Everybody was just standing there waiting.
