My suggestion would be to go with the cheaper all-Dura-Ace build and get a PowerTap wheel (if you don't already have one). Otherwise it's different names for basically the same thing.

I've not read/heard much about the Easton carbon cranks. A friend has the Vuma Quad and likes it, but he better for the price he paid...

Aside from that, the SRAM Red group is overall lighter than Dura Ace by almost a full pound. Something to think about. My riding buddy loves his Red group.

Fred,

If I were you, I would look into the SRAM Red TT group if you can with return to centre TT shifters.

Failing that, I would probably go with the full DA build (however, my bikes are all some combo of Tiagra, 105 and Ultegra).

Sounds like a great upgrade, I really like the Transition Pro, especially with a Virtue Bottle as a flat kit (or water bottle) as it essentially fairs the BB area.

Sram chain and cassette with Zipp crank.  Just what I'd personally want for no other reason than I've never had a problem with my Sram chains an cassettes and I've always wanted a Zipp crank.  Oh, and if possible, be at the shop for as much of the build as you can.  It'll be an awesome learning experience.

More importantly about your old frame.  What size is it and what are you doing with it?

My opinion.

1.  If you’re getting a GREAT deal on the 2008 Specialized Transition Pro frame and it’s mint or super low mileage good start.
2.  Zipp VumaQuad Crank too much $ for the bang.  Your bang is in your legs so a Red or DA crank will do fine.
3.  Easton Crank unsure but see #2.
4.  I personal would do a Red build #1 then the new DA group #2.

For the Aero bars best fit wins but if it these: http://www.eastonbike.com/PRODUCTS/BARS/09/bar_road_attackTT_'09.html

I think the size is limited to 38cm width and the Reach Range is not so adjustable you have to order your range.  Then there are these Eastoin Attack bars;  http://www.eastonbike.com/PRODUCTS/BARS/bar_road_attack.html  So not sure which ones you had in mind.

Here is a nice new option;  http://www.profile-design.com/profile-design/products/aerobars/carbon-aerobars/cx3.html  That is if a 42cm width is your size.  Too color choices

I would think you want aero bars similar too the one you rode this year at LP.  You’re going all carbon?

Hope it helps.

Drop the Zipp crank and go Dura Ace or FSA.

Also, anyone have experience with the Zipp aerobars? Not the integrated one, but the clip-on?

I would try several aerobar options to see which ones are the most comfortable for you.. Some may work, other's won't, weight savings aside.

I have the Zipp VukaAero and LOVE them.. Not as much that they are hot looking bars but that they are so much more comfortable than my last set of Profile Design Bars. And not a huge deal, but I haven't had to change the aerobar pads once since putting almost 5k on the bike.. My profile design bars I felt like I had to get new pads constantly.

PennState - 2009-08-19 11:40 AM Addendum:The Easton bars (without brake or aero shift levers) weighs 422g.The PD bars without brake or aro levers weighs 660g.But again, looking at those bars, there really is no adjustment allowable for the Easton ones is there?

The one thing you need to consider here is the Easton bars are not as wide.  Also compare the flexibility as I would think flex could be a issue.

PennState - 2009-08-19 1:17 PM A friend who I trust has mentioned some concerns about SRAM durability. Anyone have any experience or advice on that?

I have not heard any durability issues or crank issues.  Mixing components can be tricky so I do suggest staying with all the same components.  I have tried the SRAM TT carbon shifters on my Ultegra group and had issues fine tuning the shifting.  Switched back to the DA shifters and did the IMLP without issues.  You may consider the wheel you have now.  They are Shimano hubs right?  Will the cassettes work with SRAM?  I have no experience with SRAM and Shimano mixing components other than the shifters as mention.

I have test ridden the new DA stuff, it is urber smooth and stiff.  Friends have said the same.  So if the real issue overall compatible components mix ie crank issues on that frame than the safe bet is the DA.  At the level it all is good.

You can research weights at Weight Weenies;

http://weightweenies.starbike.com/

But you shouldn’t be too concerned about weight when getting into high end components.

I use Zipp Vuka clip-ons (Chicane) mounted to a VT basebar. Very comfortable. Light. No issues (so far).

I also run full SRAM on all my bikes (Red/Force). I haven't had any issues w/ durability. Only issue I have had is running SRAM cassettes. They can be a tad noisy. Shifting is superb, but if you're picky about noise like me, you may want to consider using a DA or Ultegra cassette. I use a DA cassette on my TT bike w/ no shifting issues, and it's more quiet.

Reliability with SRAM??  Please .......... there are absolutely no issues in my experience.

My recommendations?

SRAM Red (the shifters alone are bad azz enough to warrant the choice aside from the fact that everything is lighter).  AND, they are cheaper than Dura Ace.  I like DA, but I am absolutely sold on the Red.  It f-cking rocks.  No questions.

NOT the Vuma Quads.  I have them, they are great and I love them.  But if you are gonna drop the dough, get the Vuma Chronos - this is a TT bike.  And get the ceramic BB.

If you are absolutely sold on the Transition, okay ....... but I would also say look at the P3C or Felt DA.  Or even better, look at the new Giant - but I don't know when the release date is for it.  Not the older Trinity - the new design that Rabobank is using.  Not the P4 ..... it is a waste of dough.

I'm a fan of the Visiontech stuff, so I'd prefer those for bars.

You asked.

the easton bars i would see if you can try first, but they are actually very nice bars if you get the right size.

baring that the zipp clip ons are good, but bulky.

check out the pro missile bar, very nice and your choice of extensions, or if you like vision maybe one of their integreated ones.

i would stick with the easton or DA crank.

I've been through, and/or have a lot of aerobars around, let me know and i might be able to offer some more advice there.

good luck.

Don't forget that the Trimax integrated also includes the stem ....... that's worth 150 grams right there.  That is what I use.  But forget about adjustability with them - there is zero.

Don't be overly concerned about weight.

Red is "louder" than Dura Ace, but not by a whole lot - has to do with the chain and cassette (the cassette is a single piece carved out for SRAM as opposed to individual cogs and a small cluster for Shimano).  If you run a Shimano DA cassette and not a SRAM one, it is actually quieter.  Yes, the cassettes are fully compatible.

PennState - 2009-08-20 8:44 AM Rick, as I learn about this stuff I realise weight can be deceiving.

The option I am most interested in currently is the Vision Tech Base bar (carbon 220g) with the Zipp Vuka clip-ons+extensions. These bars are not light, but I hear they are extremely adjustable. As you know I am into the longer rides/races and would be better served by a bit more comfort than lightness. Another option I am interested in is the Zipp Basebar with the Zipp Clip-ons (Just to make it more homogeneous).

I also like the Visiontech clip-on R-bends (I have an allow set and find them comfortable and adjustable) with The Visiontech basebar.

From my ST readings, integrated looks cool, but is less adjustable as you can't change for a different stem.

I am also favoring the SRAM Red or Dura_ace full set-up. This would include the crank. I am not buying nice wheels (Have Zipp 404s) and will be getting a Specialized saddle.

I am pretty excited about all this... like a kid before Christmas

Yep, easton are great if they fit you properly, lighter, if not they aren't adjustable.

Red would be the way to go, I would stay away from the RTC TT shifters for now they are really expensive.  hehe, when I build up my wife's bike this winter she gets my DA and I will build mine back up with Red : )

I never buy groupos .... only the individual parts I'd need.

But then again, I bought $1200 carbon cranks.
