This was a local sprint tri over the weekend...I was just looking at the results to see if I knew anybody and got down to the penalties.  SEVERAL people received a penalty for headsets!  SWEET!

Very interesting!

The topic of having someone run with you came up on this board last week... I see four people were penalized for having someone pace them during the run.

Yes, I noticed that too.  The officials at this race must have been sticklers for all the commonly ignored rules....I hope it continues as a trend!

I agree.

If you're going to have the rule, enforce the rule.

Otherwise, just say "we request you don't use headphones."

Nice to see a race enforce the rules that get broken a lot.  There are a few people who would have placed higher in their age group if it weren't for their penalties.

x2. At USAT-sanctioned events, it's NOT legal, according to the rulebook!! If you don't like rule, complain to USAT. I think USATF is starting to ease up on it, but in triathlon, there's a lot more liability. And I don't understand people who feel the rules don't apply to them, who think they can just break it anyway because they're BOP, etc. I don't care if it helps them run faster or whatever. Slower cyclists don't get to draft on the bike to make up for their lack of ability, so why should head-phone wearers get to break the rules without penalty? If you want to get faster, you need to train more. And that's what they need to do.

Love it.  Few things make me happier than seeing rules enforced...even if they might not be the most important rules in the rulebook, inconsistency makes me nuts.

Headphones, Jen. Headphones. I'm reading this wondering why people were being penalized for riding/running w/a perfectly legal (and necessary) bike component.

Not simple, but correct. It's why more people choose us for your close air support needs. We're more type A than the others...

I would like to point out that there are some people who know the rule and are willing to accept the penalty. I think the rule is a 2 minute penalty for using a headset. I made a decision to take mine with me on the run and use it if I felt like it knowing I would be penalized. My point is: Don't assume people think the rule doesn't apply to them when they could simply accept the penalty and move on. By the way that is how I feel about this topic in general.

MOST USAT rules gain you extra penalties and eventually  DQ's if you don't stop doing whatever it is you got the penalty for.  Take drafting...I believe if you are caught more than 2-3 times you get DQ'ed.  It should theoretically be the same with the headset...get caught/told once = 2', get caught/told again should be 4', etc. until a DQ.

How do you know if a race is a USAT race? Is there a membership fee for USAT?

All USAT sanctioned races will require you to either purchase a 1-day license or show your membership card at packet pickup.

Yes, there is a membership fee...it's $30-$40/year depending on how many years you buy at once...currently you can subscribe out to three years.

The general rule of thumb is that if you do more than 3-4 USAT sanctioned races a year it is worth it to get the membership.

Headset (earbud) use was common during my last tri (USAT sanctioned & officiated).  My wife (spectator) even said she saw runners crossing finish line wearing buds- and no fouls were called (let alone DQ's).  I witnessed 2 near-miss accidents due to earbuds- one runner who could not hear a police officer's shouted warning about a car on the "closed" course and a cyclist (!) who almost hit me because she could not hear repeated shouts of "on your left!!".  I wrote to the event sponsor who essentially blew me off.  My guess is that if one of those 2 athletes had a serious injury accident USAT's liability insurance might balk at paying if they could establish a pattern of non-enforcement of USAT's own safety rules.

If you wanted to take it further, I would suggest you write to the regional head of officiating (once you know your region go here), and cc 1) Charlie Crawfors (USAT head of officials), 2) your regional contact/director (here) and 3) the race director who blew you off. If niothing else, it would cause the regional head to discuss it with that race's head official.

You do realize the no-headphones rule is there for your safety, not just to annoy you, right?

Oh finally!! Really, if you can't live without Bono or God forbide, The Black Eye'd Peas for a race then you have serious issues. The sport is about focus. On one's self, their competitors, and the fitness they are fortunate to have. Why let Fergie ruin it? I would rather permit drafting in a super sprint than headsets. (I am a music lover of all types; not on a bike, not in a race)
