Subject: An open letter...

to the guy at the pool this morning.

You were there because of the same reason you're reading this: you've been thinking about doing a triathlon. How do I know? I was you a year ago. The only reason middle aged guys who aren't particularaly fit and don't know the protocol for getting into a lane show up at the pool at the Y at 6:30 in the morning is because they're thinking of doing a triathlon. I've asked. Every single one has answered in the affirmative.

Rather than just get in, you stood at the edge of the pool looking around for someone or something to tell you it was ok to get in the lane. You then proceeded to slowly fight your way to the other end of the pool, turned around at the wall and made it most of the way back before standing up on the bottom out of breath and shocked at how hard it was. You did this a few times and after a few "laps" you got out, looked at the other people swimming so effortlessly back and forth and thought "I can't believe I'm so out of shape".

Sometimes you come back for one or two more tries, usually you don't come back at all. I've never seen you back at the pool after 2 weeks. If that's because swimming is too hard, that's too bad because you're wrong. It's going to take anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks of going at least 2-3 times a week before you start to build anything like endurance. 6 weeks tops. It's really hard at first and then after a few weeks there's a breakthrough session where you feel like you can just keep swimming. And you do. You swim for half an hour straight, no breaks.

The feeling of being an outsider in an alien environment goes away right then. You feel as if you belong there. You are a swimmer.

Read all you can, maybe buy a book or DVD or take some lessons. But don't stop trying because it seems ridiculously hard at first. Don't let those first few attempts stop you. Getting through those 3-6 weeks can be tough mentally, but you *can* get through them.

You can either be the guy who thought he might like to do a triathlon but gave up because swimming seemed too hard, or you can be the guy who finished a triathlon despite those first few practice swims.

Go back to the pool.

Nice. Ought to be posted at every pool. I know it took me a couple years and a couple of false starts before I stuck with it long enough for it to halfway "click."

Such eloquence!!  I thought that I was the only Dory in the pool... (Where am I going?  What was I doing here?)  You have a way with words Michael.

Great post.  I was just thinking along those lines this morning as I was doing a 3000 yard straight swim.  Back in July of 2004, I couldn't swim one length without becoming out of breath.  That was 10 months ago, and here I was this morning doing 60 laps (120 lengths) effortlessly.

This is one post all newbie's should, thanks for the reminder

Chris

Yup...you nailed me.  But don't post this at your pool.  Say it at your pool.

I've started swimming at noon because there are less SCUBA students standing around between laps and taking up space.  I've also noticed there's a definite noon-time crowd.  It was a little intimidating, but I'm not one to be intimidated easily, so I don't care.  At noon, there are certain familiar faces: tri-guy who swims in Pearl Izumi Tri-shorts every day, swimmer-girl with her UNLV swim cap and kick-board work that splashes everyone, guy whose face gets REALLY red, and the subject of this post, guy who wears Speedos...even though he really shouldn't.

Wednesday, I show up for a noon swim and Speedo is just getting started.  I jump into the empty lane next to his and get myself ready to swim.  He starts some small talk and I talk about my goals of improving swimming for triathlons.  He says, "You're getting a whole lot better.  Heck, we all are, even us old guys who are trying to lose weight."  After which he heads of on his 500 yd warm-up complete with flip-turns.

Now, the simple fact that he recognized who I was AND noticed improvements that I hadn't really felt or seen did wonders for my swim that day.  It was obvious that he was just reminding himself of skills long past; it's obvious that I'm in unfamiliar territory.  That being the case, the kind words that were shared in the span of 30 seconds did more for my swim that day than any drills or repeats could have.

Bottom line:  If you know these are fledgling triathletes, acknowledge them and encourage them.

Wonderful....just excellent!

Believe me, I would have been "that guy" (in female form) except for two things:

1) I started swimming on New Years Day, 2004.  I had called ahead to the contact person for my local Master's group listed on the USMS website, and he told me he would be there.  Turned out, he was the ONLY person besides me there that day, so he sat down with me and we had a very nice chat about what I could expect. That way when the group started growing day by day and week by week as people filtered back in after the holidays, I new what was coming and got acclimated slowly.   Plus, this being the Midwest, the group is filled with very nice, very friendly people who took time to talk to me, and made me feel welcome.  Very nice way to get started, and something most people aren't lucky enough to have.

2) I refuse to give in to my fears.  But I earned that the hard way, and some people just aren't there yet  or sadly, never get there.

And those are just the people your eloquent, thoughtful post are going to mean the most to....you could be a real influence on someone's life.  Well done.

Great post and very encouraging. I had a mini-breakthrough yesterday when I completed 800 yards in 20 minutes without stopping, and doing freestyle the whole way. A couple of weeks ago I could only manage 50 yards at a time and had to throw in lots of breast stroke and rests. So I can say from personal experience that your post is true.

Absolutely dead-on Michael.  I think you nailed most of us on here.  That was me 15 months ago.  I'll be far better from now on at doing my best to encourage the folks who are where I was then.  Thanks for the post.

I don't know about all of you but I feel a strong desire to leave work early and go swimming. Perhaps nobody would notice if I just left 3 hours early.

Thank you for that. Yes, being the newbie in the pool can be very intimidating!

Sigh. I can't wait until Memorial Day Weekend when they open my local swimming lagoon an I can get back to swimming. Open water swimming at that.

even with a wetsuit it is a bit too cool for open water swimming here. I think I need to live in a warmer climate if I keep this up!

GREAT THREAD!!!

I loved reading that fantastic letter. 20 days ago I could barely make it across a 25m pool without my lungs bursting into flames in spite of the ubiquitous water around me and without stopping to feverishly ward off cardiac arrest. Seriously. About 10 days ago I swam 200m without stopping and was thrilled. 4 days later I swam 300m. 2 days after that, 400m... I am so pumped to see some results in only 3 weeks and hope they keep coming. I can't wait to get back into the pool and keeping working at it. Thanks for the support in your letter - and everyone starting in the pool, keep at it!!

Marmadaddy, one year ago tomorrow I was set to arrive at Wake Forest for my first tri. I was scared TO DEATH I would not make the 300 meter swim. Without a training partner who stuck with me I do not know if I would have. So if you see a person by themself and looking unsure, pat them on the back and encourage them. The guy who stuck with me is going back to Wake tomorrow and it is not the first tri of the year for either of us. Excellent post!

Fred

See ya tomorrow jkbostic and Wakeman!
