Subject: Am I overtrained?
could use some BT advice..

(first: my logs are accurate)

I just had an awful run. I normally keep an 8:45-9:40 pace on my runs, and today my average pace as 10:15... and it was really hard. My legs hurt, I felt slow, heavy, and just blah.  And I have never felt so exhuasted after a 4 mi run... I'm just worn out.

some thoughts:
1. I didn't sleep well (rescused a dog in the middle of the night and was up with her for a while until the shelter opened)
2. I took a clonopen in the middle of the night when I felt a panic attack coming on... which knocked me out for the rest of the day.
3. I raced a HIM on Sunday and took one rest day (Monday).

Should I take another day off this week? Should I just push through the exhuation?  I guess I'm asking: do I do legit rest or should I HTFU?

I think it is a combination of the three issues you mentioned. Maybe having a rest/recovery week this week instead of hitting it hard..isn't this your 3rd run since your HIM Sunday?

Listen to your body it's trying to tell you something.

Short answer is no. You are just tired.

Maybe shorten a few workouts, decrease the intensity, that sort of thing, until you feel like your usual self.  I agree, sounds like a combo of things and you're just tired.

If I put everything I've got into a race, I'm not really the same until almost 3 weeks after the race.

Take at least a few days (maybe a week?) off!  It won't kill your fitness, and at the end of it you'll be itching to train.

By the strict medical definition, no, you're probably not overtrained. It does sound like you're overreaching, though, and a few days-a week off would do you some good...

I do primarily sprint distances.  It's all my schedule will allow.  I usually try to explode on the day of the race so it doesn't leave me with much after.

you should not be feeling a sprint past a few days, if so you may be doing something wrong/not eating well?

I would see how you feel in your next sessions.  I have been known to have an off day but after a good night's sleep I come back and my next workout is back to normal.  If you feel the same in your next workout(s) I would take an extra day off, but that is just me.

  • A workout like that is what I use to determine when I need a day off to recover. But only one because the feedback of how I perform in the next workout is important to me. If I bounce back, then I know that I'm on track with my training load. I'd never take "a few days" or "a week" off unless I'm injured or recovering from a HIM distance race.

If it were me I would prob go for a swim the next day, rather than a run or taking the day off altogher. But then again, for me, swimming is almost like therapy and depending on how I feel in the pool I can either make it a hard session or an easy, relaxing swim. Takes the weight off your legs, is still relevant, and is easy to "make easy" if you feel like crap again.

Oh, another thing. I never realized you just raced a HIM this weekend. After my HIM I was very slow for a good week or so...I wouldn't stress about it too much if you have to take some time off/ratchet your training down for a few days. Recovery is part of training and risking hurting yourself now with your big race coming up is not worth it. Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I'm dead for a week after a HIM. I may only take a day off, but it's all easy easy stuff for atleast a few days. Depends on how a race goes. I did two Olympics in August one took me about a day to recover from the other took more like 4-5 days to get back to normal.

Overtrained is something quite hard to truly reach. Some fatigued and just plain tired is pretty common but you can bounce back in a day. If you're overtrained it's effects are going to go on for a good while.

No, it sounds you are just tired from chronic fatigue; take a day or two easy (off if necessary though don't rush to kisp training), sleep, eat well, chillax with your beloved ones and you should be back to normal soon. Also IIRC you are training for IMCoz hence you might be around the cycle with greater training load hence it will be normal to have more than one crappy sessionn or even slow down a bit.

Manage your load, take easy days when need it and most imrportantly, take care of the details: sleep/rest, nutrition, stress, massaga (self or other), stretch, compression/ice, warmup/cool down, etc.

Jorge hit this pretty well.  I think I told you this yesterday too with just getting pulled in too many directions.  Take a day off, that day won't kill your fitness but it will do wonders for your feeling the next workout.

    Good luck tricia!

I'm not sure that it matters if you're over trained or just tired.

Either way, your body needs some rest.

Taking an extra rest day, sounds like a very good idea.

Well it does matter since being tired and being overtrained are two totally different things. What this sounds like is a matter of managing training load as Jorge pointed out.

Overtraining is a case where your body completely resists adaptations that are brought on by training load. It messes with your adrenal system and you honestly have to take a large portion of time off in order to let your body correct the problem (and by a long time I mean a year or so. One guy that I know here took 18 months to correct the problem). That being said the odds of an Age Group athlete being overtrained are pretty much slim and none.
