Subject: Wetsuit Wouldn't Come Off!!! Why?

I ran the Savageman Olympic race yesterday as part of a relay team - I swam, a friend biked and then I ran (sort of - that's another thread). Swim went great, but after I passed off the chip to my cyclist, I could NOT get my wetsuit off for the life of me! I've had it since April 2008 and I've never had a problem with it. It always slides right off. I had body glide on my arms and my legs all the way up to my elbows and shins, which is what I always do. I usually just unzip it, get it off my shoulders and just pull it right off my arms, then get it off my hips and it slides off of my legs. It got stuck on both my arms and my legs. We went swimming in the lake the day before the race and I had the same trouble getting it off there, but I figured it was just b/c I hadn't put body glide on - but even with body glide, it didn't come off.

Obviously, I'm concerned b/c if I have to use it in a race again, this will ruin my transition times. What could possibly be the cause of this? I hung it out to dry, inside out, on Saturday after we swam, so it was completely dry when I put it on Sunday morning. Is there something that I could have accidentally done to my wetsuit that would have caused this?

maybe the suit shrunk b/c you haven't worn it for a while.  Even the dip in the lake the day before I would think would help out.

was it stuck to your skin? or was the wetsuit sticking to itself as you peeled it down? I always spray Pam on the outside of the legs and arms of the suit.

Body Glide won't help it come off any easier, it just keeps it from chaffing you.

Did you leave it out in the sun a lot?

I've always done the thing with the body glide and have never had a problem. Regardless of whether or not it helps the suit come off faster, I know that the body glide didn't cause the problem.

It was in the trunk of my car for a bit after I decided to go to an OWS clinic, but then decided not to - so not exposed to the sun, but I guess heat - though at work my car is parked in a garage all day. But I took it out later after I remembered it was still in there. Did I kill my wetsuit?

(Not that it REALLY matters, b/c I only paid $55 for it, it was an entry level suit, and I'm not in love with it anyway)

Wasn't implying that the Body Glide was the problem.  It wouldn't cause it to stick (unless something in it reacted to something on the suit but then you would probably have felt it on your skin too).

The reason I was asking about the sun is it would completely dry out the suit and shrink it up.  And a slightly "hydrated" suit is more supple.

Don't know what could be causing it really.

No, I didn't get fatter, if that's what you are implying  I was fatter (for me, anyway) back in April at Rumpass, and it came off just fine then. It still fits. It just wouldn't come off.

How long did you stand around before trying to remove it? Once all the water drains out of it down the legs it will become much, much harder to remove. If you jump back in the water, pull open the neck and get some water in, then it will come off easy.

No amount body glide, pam, etc. is going to help much when the suit has created a suction against your body.

It was a bit of a haul up to transition, but I tried getting it off of my upper body as I was running. And as soon as I passed my chip to my cyclist, I continued to try to rip it off. So I wasn't standing around drying off before I tried.

Whatever - I'm going to assume it's busted and I'll need to get a new one for next season.

Sounds like a good enough reason to buy a new suit that you like alot more.

I just replaced my wetsuit, and not being able to get it off was one of the reasons I needed a new one. It also had gaping, irreparable holes.

I bought an Xterra Vortex in 2006. Everything was great for the first year- the thing came off so easily- just fell off my skin. I used it a lot- lots of training in the ocean, races, etc. I was very satisfied with it. At the end of last season, and after a full summer of use and some abuse (leaving it in the hot sun during races, to the point where the rubber melted together) it just stopped coming off! It was not any tighter on me, but the inside material just stuck to my skin like glue. This wasn't the usual stuck at the wrists/ankles- it was stuck to my skin. Even wetsuit strippers couldn't pull the darn thing off. I still don't know how the material changed, but that's my only thought.

I guess over time, they just get old! I bought a new suit on Saturday (De Soto T1), and it fits even tighter than the Xterra, but comes off in a flash.  I have promised myself I will be way, way more careful about cleaning and drying this one, so hopefully it lasts another 3 years!

One thing I find is that ease of off is related to water inside the suit the more the easier.  If I leave it on to long the water drains out and it's harder to get off.  I have never used Pam or Body glide and really never had to much trouble.

I know, but as I stated, I attempted to get it off as soon as I possibly could - along the route to transition and immediately after I handed off my chip to my cyclist. I wasn't standing around in it. If water drained out when I was running, there's not a whole lot I could do about that.

I'm assuming the neoprene just got ruined and that's why it wouldn't come off.
