I had this race on my list for 2010 and had planned on it being my first Oly, but turns out it is the same day as my daughter's state fastptich tournament. Don't know where the tourney is yet. If it is local, then I might still do the race and just miss the first game or so, depending on how the two schedules line up. If the tournament is outsate, then will have to pass on the race.... I wonder when reg closes?

Rode the bike course last weekend with a couple guys that did this race last year. They both said the roads are in worse condition this year. Will they try and fix them for us at all?
Minnehaha, from west of Cedar to the round-a-bout (you ride most of this section twice), and the west side of Harriet are especially bad. I think we saw 6 or 7 ejected water bottles on Minnehaha by where the bike path crosses on the north of the lake, and I think I saw one of those Smart Cars in a pothole on Harriet.

I am getting very excited though. Really hoping to beat my buddy and his new 808's.

The roads are absolutely terrible. I will not do this race again until the roads are fixed. I have done this race 3 times with the most recent last year. Last year the roads were really bad.....they are worse this year.

A bit off-topic, but in terms of roads...square lake is going to be mostly awesome this year with 95 having been repaved.

I swam out there last night and wore my wetsuit and it was VERY warm. I've swam in races where the temp has been just wet suitable, and it's not felt as warm as it did last night. Of course, that was at 5:15 pm on a sunny day. I would be surprised if you could wear it.

Ball - can you remind me where to find that lake temp information? I always lose the link over the winter...

I wanted to remind everyone that 94 East between 280 and 35E will be closed all weekend. If you were planning to take 94, better plan a different route to the race...

Was expecting a non-wetsuit swim, but haven't done anything but wetsuit swims in open water. I'll be at Nokomis later this afternoon doing about 1000 meters, just for the confidence boost.

I could see them allowing wetsuits for most people, doesn't the USAT guide say above x temp its up to the RD but it will not be eligible for awards if they choose to wear one?

That being said, I saw something on the news last night indicating they outlined potholes with orange paint, and were hoping to get them filled today.

Rode the course Monday and it was rough, but I was expecting worse, only a few big potholes I saw were on the West side of the river, the east side was just rough in general.

You're right. Here's the USAT rule:

4.4 Wet suits.
Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wet suit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wetsuit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Age group participants shall not wear wet suits in water temperatures equal to or greater than 84 degrees Fahrenheit. The wetsuit policy for elite athletes shall be determined by the USAT Athletes Advisory Council.

The AAC has set the wetsuit maximum temperature for elite/pros at 68 degrees for swim distances less than 3000 meters and 71.6 degrees for distances of 3000 meters or greater.

Effective January 1, 2013, any swimmer wearing a wetsuit with a thickness measured in any part greater than 5 millimeters shall be disqualified.

I asked about this for my first race and that was the gist of what that particular RD said. I think you'd have a hill of trouble if you showed up at Lifetime with a wet suit. It would be annoying to try to explain to folks, at the very least.

That's just my opinion...

(Sal - I've never swam in a race - or a lake for any reason - without a wetsuit so I did about 5 mins in Nokomis last night, for a confidence builder. I don't think it will be a problem with my race in Door County, but I wanted to see what it felt like. It was so much fun I am going to try it again this weekend! There's hope for me yet. )

Well, I need to rephrase. I've swum several races in open water without a wetsuit, just not THIS SEASON. This would be my first non-wetsuit OWS. Chalk it up to my poor training this year.

I swam at Lake Marion this morning and wore my wetsuit. Water temp was 79 degrees. I would NOT reccomend doing this. I felt like I was boiling.

I used a sleevless wetsuit in Nokomis this morning, and I was okay with the temps. I did only do about ten laps of the bouys though, so maybe going the Oly distance would make a negative difference.

They were saying 79° at the expo... I'm with Brian, for the oly especially, too warm for my blood, I would have a major fever getting out of the water! Looks like no wetsuit for me tomorrow!
